Ashy-kun's Song Translations

Post by Ashy-kun » Sat Jul 03, 2010 8:13 am

As I said in my thread introducing myself, I'm something of an amateur translator. And I thought I should use this thread to put up my translations for those who wish to see them. I have a backlog of Dragonball Z songs that I've translated, that I will put up after going through them and polishing up any last minute bits that need doing.

Does anyone have any particular song that they'd like to see up? This thread will also work as a requests thread, as I translate and put up songs requested of me as well.

For starters, I shall probably put up "Vegeta-sama no Oryouri Jigoku!! 'Okonomiyaki' no Maki". (I'm not too sure if the kanji is meant to be read that way as "Maki". If someone who knows the Kanji better could tell me, I would appreciate it.) The lyrics and translation will appear in my next post.

Based on the context, I assume "巻" is the Kanji you're most likely referring to. I'm pretty sure that's read as "Maki", but I may be wrong though, since I'm not familiar with the song you're talking about.

Well, "Okonomiyaki" no Maki rhymes and sounds nice, though I've always seen it written as "Okonomiyaki" no Kan.

Though I know it's not an official Dragon Ball song, do you think you could translate Maximum the Hormone's "F"? They lyrics would be almost impossible to make out, but I get the feeling that the subtitles on the music video I watched for it weren't entirely accurate. But I would like to see pretty much any song that hasn't already been translated.

Well... I'd rather have the lyrics in Japanese in front of me. And sadly I cannot view any music videos with it in. It appears that the AB Group in its overzealous attempt to block people in their area from seeing anything Dragonball Z related (whether they actually own it or not), has blocked me from seeing it.

Never mind, I can still provide the songs that I freely have in the Chouzenshuu release. And with that, here is "The Great Vegeta's Cuisine Hell!! The ' "However You Like It" Grilled Pancake' Chapter."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“Saa, temee-ra, kakugo shiyagaree! Kono Vegeta-sama ga tappuri to ryouri shiteyaru ze!!”

“Now then, all of you, you just prepare yourselves! I, the great Vegeta, will be cooking all of you up completely!!”

Mazu wa ‘cabbage’ da, mijingiri
Koppamijin shiteyaru ze!!
“Zakkuri, zakkuri, zakkuzaku”

First off, it’s ‘cabbage’, finely chopped…
I’ll crush and slice you up into smithereens!!
“Hack and slash, hack and slash, HACK-ing away…”

Tsugi wa kisama da, ‘ninjin’ yarou!
Ningen mitee na sono namae
Mattaku fuzaketa yarou da ze
Kisama no kumi nya hedo ga deru!!
Fuhahahahahahaha! Fuhahahahahahaha!

And next up, it’s you, you damn lowly ‘carrot’!
… It’s like a person’s, that name of your’s…
Some wretch who truly made a joke out of me!
Spew will come flying forth (just) at your (very) taste!!
H-Hahahahahahaha! H-Hahahahahahaha!

Daga sore mo, ima no ore ni wa tsuuyou shinee!
Saa, yukkuri to kawa wo haide
Bakibaki ni kizandeyaru ze!!
“Baki baki bakkibaki”

Though, even with that in mind, you won’t be of any real use to me at the present!
Well then… Tearing your skin off,
And snapping you to pieces, I’ll just carve you up!!
“Snap and crack, snap and crack, crack-cracking…”

Oo, tsugi wa ‘butaniku’ daa!
Ii tsuya shite’ru ja nee ka?
Shinsen na yarou wo miru to
Mune ga takanatte’kiyagaru ze!

Ohh, next up is ‘pooork’!
Well, now, aren’t you glazing well?
Upon seeing a fresh wretch like yourself,
My heart just goes and beats faster!

Saa, power wo shuuchuu sase
200g ikki ni komakiri daa!
“Zuta zuta zuttata zuttattatta”

Now then, let me focus my power!
200g, sliced finely, at ooonce!
“Rip and tear, rip AND tear, rip and te-te-te-tear…”

Youshi, kokora de ‘yamaimo’ ni chousen da!
Dekoboko shiyagatte
Bake no kawa hinmuiteyaru ze!

All right now, there’s some defiance in this ‘yam’, over here!
Then, making you jagged and rough-edged,
I’ll just strip away your ghastly skin!

“Tsuru, tsuru, tsuru, tsuru, neba, neba, neba, neba”
Namaiki na yarou da ze!
“Suri, suri, suri, suri, doro, doro, doro, doro”
Tekozuraseyagaru ze!

“Slippery, slippery, slippery, slippery, sticky, sticky, sticky, sticky…”
You are (all) impertinent wretches!
“Sliding, sliding, sliding, sliding, gloopy, gloopy, gloopy, gloopy…”
You’re making me have such a hellish time!

Subette mo kayukute mo
Koko de makecha naranee
Saigo made suriorose ore no mentsu ni kakete!

Even when slipping, even when itching…
I cannot, I mustn’t lose to you, here…
Grating you smoothly and wagering my very honour on it, to the very end!

Haa, haa, haa, haa… Haa, haa, haa, haa…
Saa, nokori yarou-domo
Ichimoudajin ni shiteyaru ze!!

Haa, haa, haa, haa… Haa, haa, haa, haa…
Now then, you pathetic wretches left over!
I’ll round you all up together in one go!!

‘Komugiko’ ni ‘mizu’ wo bukkake!
‘Tenkasu’ to ‘tamago’ mo buchigomi!
‘Kizami shouga’ mo iretara
Hikkakimawashiteyaree!!
“Maze maze maze”

Dash some ‘water’ onto the ‘wheat flour’!
Cast and smash the ‘fried batter’ and ‘eggs’ into one another!
When you put in the ‘shredded ginger’,
Stir it up and throw it into confusion!!
“Mix it, mix it, mix it up…”

Sakki no yarou-domo mo guchagucha ni
Mechakucha ni mazeawase
Ato wa teppan no ue de jikkuri yakiageteyaru dake sa
“Juu, juu, juu”

And you wretches from some time ago, blend and mix together
Into one sloppy, absurd mess!
Afterwards is when I will grill you on top of an iron griddle, as careful as possible
“Sizzle, crackle, sizzle…”

Sauce’ ni ‘aonori’ ‘okaka’ de todome da!
Dou da, maiita ka!!
Fuhahahahahahaha! Fuhahahahahahaha!

With green seaweed, dried, chopped tuna, in sauce, that’s the finishing touch!
How’s that?! Do you give up (now)?!
H-Hahahahahahaha! H-Hahahahahahaha!

“Okonomiyaki battle mo
Saa, kuchi wo ookiku agete
Kore de itadaku da ze!!!”

“Through this battle of the ‘However You Like It’ grilled pancake…
Well… Open your mouth up, wide and grandly!
With this, receive this food as your crown!!!”

Otto ikenee
Mayonnaise’ mo wasurenen ja nee ze!

Ah, wait, that’s not good!
We mustn’t forget the ‘mayonnaise’!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
As I am sure you can tell, I have a distinct style with how I do my translations. I leave words of non-Japanese origin as how they are spelt in their language, so words one finds in English that Japanese borrows (loanwords) are left in English spelling. e.g. "Mayonnaise". I keep English translation in italics. This is just an aesthetic choice. And I highlight the words in English in bold and italic, to show the crossover of languages.

When I translate, I like to think of the meaning behind the statement, and so if I feel a word that isn't necessarily there in the Japanese, but I feel is needed to highlight the nuances in the statement, I add it, but in brackets. This usually comes in forms of words like "Now" or so.

I also like to have the English lyrics of one part of the song come right after one another. Don't ask why. It just suits me better.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful to those who have always wanted to see this song translated. I think next, I shall put up the song "Majin Boo no Higeki". And here you shall see what I translate "Majin" as.

Yes, I actually decided to have a go at translating the word "Majin".

Will it be Boo the Djinn??

And thanks for the translation. I'm looking forwards to Majin-Boo no Hideki. That's a good song. :D

No, no, trust me, my translation of Majin is probably the best I can think of to work with Boo. It even addresses the "M" on the heads of each person made into a Majin by Babidi.

I don't know if that's what the "M" stands for... It's possibly "M" for "madoushi".

I believe that's something that Mr. Grybowski speculated in the podcast episode regarding "Djinn" vs. "Majin". I don't think it was ever actually stated as concrete fact.

"Majin" only refers to the type of race/creature that Buu is. Babidi's slaves obviously don't get turned into that. In context, it seems to be more of a branding iron for Babidi's family than anything, which would also explain why they wear it on their own clothes. Hence the theory that it more likely stands for "Madoushi," if anything.

So, in other words, "Majin Vegeta" is another fan-term that still gets bandied about for no reason? Well, that kinda negates one of the reasons I went with the translation I did, but it still works for Boo, at least.

But I suppose I can't beat around the bush any longer. What I translate "Majin" as is simply:

"Magical Being".

It's short, succinct and to the point.

Now, my explanation for this is that the way DragonBall spells the word "Majin" is with the Kanji "魔人". This is in contrast to "魔神". It uses the Kanji "人" or "jin/hito", as opposed to the Kanji "神", or "shin/kami", which can also be read as "jin" depending on what precedes it.

My dictionaries define "魔神" as "evil spirit / devil / genie". Now, "genie" is evidently where Viz was getting the "Djinn" idea from. "Genie" derives from "Djinn". I can see the logic in it, as well as if they called him an "Evil Spirit".

Both words use the kanji "魔", "Ma". This can mean "demon / devil", et cetera, as in "Daimaou", or it can have connotations of "magic", as in "Makafushigi Adventure".

Meanwhile, for "Majin", using the "人" kanji, I looked into what I could call Boo. I wanted to incorporate the magical spirit, genie-style idea with the idea of "person / people / human" from the "人" kanji. So, I hit on the idea of "human being", and so I finally came up with "Magical Being". And of course, this can work as a definition for a genie, itself. Furthermore, using the word "Magic" can bring up connotations of both black and white magic, meaning Boo's style of magic and his turning from bad to good can still let him be called "Magical Being Boo".

And so, onwards with the translation. I give you "Tragedy of the Magical Being Boo".

I want to hear the shrieks of you - You there, before me, quaking
In any case, you weak, living things are sure to just go and perish

Meido no miyage ni oshieteyarou ka?
Tatakau tame tsukurareta Majin no higeki wo

Shall I tell you it, as a present to the underworld?
The tragedy of a Magical Being, created in order to fight?

Singing that there had existed some kind feelings there somewhere

If I should defeat you,
Again, my loneliness will increase
This foolish struggle, even longer
Than all eternity, it will still continue

And to Ashy-kun, thank you for the translation! I'll listen to the song while reading the translation once I'm slightly more awake. Lol.

Ah, "Majin Vegeta" is an acceptable term, after all. Thank-you. Now my reason about keeping Magical Being, and making the term more flexible and less specific to Boo himself is valid again. "Magical Being Vegeta", a Vegeta now made into a "Magical Being" by being possessed by a magician.

Just before I go to bed, here's "Arijigoku", or as I call it, to try and keep all nuances about it in it, "The Hellish Pit of the Antlion". "Arijigoku", you see, refers to the larvae of antlions or doodlebugs. They're nasty little critters, that dig pits in the sand, into which ants fall. This is why in Japanese, they are literally called "Ant hell", and why we call them "ant lions" in English. They prey on the unfortunate ants. Once the ants have fallen into the pit, they are left to wait for their inevitable doom. This is why, in Japanese, "Arijigoku" is used idiomatically to refer to a situation in which a bad outcome is more or less inevitable, and that once you get into it, you know you're stuck and can only wait for it.

This song was a lot of fun, trying to translate the chorus so I had new words every time there was a new word in Japanese. You see, the Japanese choruses had a lot of words composed of the same kanji, but with different nuances. For instance, "Hakai", "Hametsu", etc. can both come out as "Destruction", thanks to the kanji "Ha". However, as each of the words are different, I wanted to make different words be there in English. Better that than a chorus like "Destruction, self-destruction, unrestricted tyranny, explosions, destruction" and such.

EDIT: Oh, and I just remembered. A few of the words are compounds, that have extra meanings. "Mugenjigoku" literally is "eternal hell", but it's the name of a Buddhist hell, for eternal suffering. Hence "the hell of endless suffering" as I put it. "Miraieigou" literally means just "Eternity".

Ore ga shabereba, daichi ga furuedasu
Ore ga omoeba, asa ga yoru ni naru
Ore ga sawareba, gareki ga hikaridasu

If I should walk, then the lightning flash will run past
If I should speak, then the ground will begin to tremble
If I should think it, then the morning will become night
(And) if I should touch it, then the rubble will start to shine

Mamonaku tsume ga omae no senaka ni
Shiranu ma ni kuikondeyuku darou

(And) before long, while you are none the wiser, these claws of mine
Will go and eat into your back, isn’t that so?

Cool, Cool Dandy
Ore no koto
Powerful Dandy
Cool, Cool Dandy

Yume wa nai
Saa, ima sugu kiero!

Cool, Cool Dandy
Everything about me
Powerful Dandy
Cool, Cool Dandy
There are no dreams
So, then, disappear, right now!

Ore ga mezasu wa kagirinai kouya
Ore ga nozomu wa daremo inai sekai

I will set my aim on an endless deserted land
I feel desire for a world where there is no-one in it

Akumade hayaku omae no karada ga
Shiranu ma ni tokedashiteyuku darou

And all too quick, until it is too late, while you are none the wiser,
Your body will go and start to melt, isn‘t that so?

Cool, Cool Dandy
Ore no koto
Powerful Dandy
Cool, Cool Dandy

Rekishi sae
Oh, ima sugu kaero!

Cool, Cool Dandy
Everything about me
Powerful Dandy
Cool, Cool Dandy
Amend yourself from
Oh, even history, right now!

This one is a little rusty, but I'm fairly happy with it.

Greetings, everyone. I just thought I'd give a little explanation as to why this topic has been a little slow lately. I'm going to a con called Amecon this year, and in a few days (Thursday is when I leave), and I'm not only doing preparations for cosplays there and such, but I'm also doing not one, but two panels there, one of which is me teaching Japanese freestyle and laid-back, for 2.5 hours.

As you can see, that's a fair bit of work to do, and translating for less imperative things fell to the wayside. All my translating work has gone into these panels.
