So then my question is still valid: do you think that FUNimation should have went against all dubbing standards and started adding in new sound effects that weren't in the Japanese original?
To be honest I don't trust FUNimation when it comes to adding in extra sound effects. I was talking about the Ocean Version. Since I know what they are capable of, if you phrase the question as to whether Ocean sound add in extra sound effects, my answer is yes, because they've done it before and many times it enhanced the scenes in question. (For example, "shocked" scenes which rapidly change to show characters' shocked expressions, the sound effects Ocean adds makes it so much better than the other versions, it
really draws you into the scenes) On the other hand, to answer your question as to whether Funimation should add in extra sound effects, I'm leaning towards no.
Are you holding it against FUNimation for straight up dubbing the Japanese show?
Calm down. I was only commenting on one scene. You may have seen my criticisms of FUNimation's previous dubs but when it comes to Kai, they're doing a much better job than what they've done before. Funi's Kai dub Ginyu scene felt a bit lacking due to the voices more than lack of effects ( I wasn't even expecting added sound effects in Funi's version) But one factor was my expectation. After hearing how good the new voices of Zarbon and Dodoria were, I was perhaps expecting equally, if not better, recasts for the Ginyu force. Needless to say we need to watch the next episode to draw fuller conclusions but these are my initial impressions.
If you had claimed to like it better than the original Japanese version that'd be one thing, but saying that it's better than FUNimation's version because they didn't add sound effects is just baffling...
So it's OK to say it's better than the Japanese version but not FUNimation's version?
The Ocean version is better, and that is more to do with the voices than lack of sfx in Funi's dub. The Ocean voices sound more maniacal and threatening, not to mention they have more effort put in them. The sfx helps Ocean's scene. If adding in sfx adds to the enjoyment or atmosphere, as it did in Ocean's version, then I'd say it's a good thing.

That is what I meant. The Japanese "Tokusentai" vocal fit the scene better than the "Ginyu force rules" vocal. The dub version is cheesier but it doesn't make it better.
and Brice Armstrong was an AWESOME Captain Ginyu, the new voice is fine, but Ginyu was the best of the old dub Ginyu voices by far.
Brice was quite good but Dale Kelly and Richard Newman were better. Compare how Dale and Brice say "You're a...Super Saiyan" & "I'm the great Captain Ginyu" Dale put much more effort than Brice, and those aren't the only scenes.
