Ha ha thanks a bunch for the uploads. Interesting stuff, I really appreciate it. It's hard to imagine a time when this was the only way to watch the show.

It's funny because "nani" is the polite way of saying "what" in Japanese, and they still translated it as "what the hell".

What? Freeza doesn't call Krillin a "bald punk", he calls him a "chikyuujin" -- "earthling". You know what? I'm going to stop criticizing the translation because we all know it's horrible.

"An Anime Labs creation"

My, my we're vain aren't we? I despise their attitude already.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Was this released on April 1st or something?

Also what is with them and the 40 exclamation marks after every sentence? Yeesh, if I was living in a time when this was the norm I'd be on hands and knees begging for something even as awful as the orange bricks. This makes todays fansubbers look like full fledged professionals.

So they didn't curse in the REAL Dragonball Z? Because the subtitles weren't like this on the Dragon boxes.

Well, it's hard to say. It depends on context, in Japanese. "Shimatta" literally is just the past form of the verb "shimau" which is a way of saying "to do", but with an air of finality to it. I personally like to translate it (if the context is right) as "That's done it!", as in "Damn! Well, that's done it!"

Of course, that's not exactly a good context with perhaps Freeza seeing the Energetic Ball staring him in the face and eat up his own Death Ball. So, you could go with just "Damn!" or "Darn". Yes, I know. People want to hear more than just "mild swearing", but it's not like he is out right cussing.

In fact, the closest word I can think of, that could be construed in any way as dropping the "F-bomb" is "Kutabare!" and that's only because of the sheer rudeness behind it, as opposed to it being inherently bad. If you're a gang delinquent Yankee style character in an anime, for instance, "Kutabare!" could be taken as "**** you!"

However, the word comes from "Kutabaru" which is to die, more specifically to die from exhaustion. Therefore you're really telling someone to just "Drop dead!" Of course, you can add little bits here and there to make it more fitting to your context. Like "Rot in hell!" is a good one.

Well, I got the answer I was looking for:

http://www.angelfire.com/mi/tENCHImUYO/dbz.html

And thus the answer is no, Anime Labs didn't translate it all.

I realize I have the majority of their tapes, but not all. For example, My android saga tapes end at episode 129, so I don't get to see the "candy ass" Vegeta line

I'll be posting more videos later today

They're hilarious. In some of the tapes they're calling out people who sell copies of their stuff and they're like "rot in hell, X! don't buy our stuff if you don't like it!". I posted one of those, there are other occurrences though
Blue wrote:Thank you again for sharing these little bits of DBZ history with us.

Hey, I'm having fun doing it. It's making me feel nostalgic going through my old tapes again. Though in some ways back then (around 1997-1999) whenever I was buying one of the tapes, it was really special. It felt like I had some kind of treasure, despite the bad quality.

Some of my friends from France had seen the DBZ cartoon in their country and they talked about it, but here in Canada it seemed DBZ would never be available. I even bought a French Super Famicom in 1997 to play some of the old games like Hyper Dimension and I had all my friends over and they were going nuts. "Wow, you have tapes of Freezer! Its Freezer in color!" We were so used to the manga it was weird actually hearing the characters voices

I'd never have dreamed that I would one day just walk into a random electronics store and find a bunch of DB/Z films, series, etc. For some reason, it just makes the DBZ episodes feel less precious or something because they're so much easier to find now so you're no longer "special" if you've got the films or games
