Why does everyone question this? It's clearly a stylistic choice, as they are gag scenes. It is, or at least I know it used to be a somewhat common thing in anime, most notably in Dragon Half, where the most ridiculous scenes are drawn extremely super deformed. Also, what does this have to do with this worst looking episode in the entire series?

In my opinion, I think it was animated that way just for a humorous effect. That part in the movie bothered me the first time I watched it, but now it doesn't bother me that much...

It very clearly was. It is a gag scene, and it's drawn with a very thick, distinct cartoon style, and it's not, or at least wasn't unusual (don't know the current state of it in anime, as I very rarely watch newer anime), so I don't understand what everyone's problem is... The scene wouldn't even look right if it was drawn super detailed and with the regular style...

I personally like it, because it fits Goten's and Trunks' (and Gotenks) antics during the scene and is kind of a cool stylistic choice. So basically what you said.

It's not necessarily badly animated, just...different, but in a good way.

Yeah, I wasn't really accusing you. It's just that I see people complaining about it all the time and talking about how "weird" it is...

I enjoy it too, it is pretty weird though. The 11 previous movies and all 3 series didn't do anything like that cosmetically. It's jarring to be slapped in the face by a new style of outlining and then have it leave as quickly as it came.

Episode 231 or 232 (I don't remember which, it was the final episode of the Son Vs. Majin Vegeta fight where Vegeta knocks Son out)

The episode was just horridly animated. The characters were horribly off-model, you can especially tell in their hair. It was just abysmal.

I think people dislike it because it's very cartoony and cute and DBZ is a "HARDCORE ACTION ANIME".

What about Gohan's drunken hallucinations in Movie 1 and his dream sequence in movie 2? Those were just as, if not even more cartoony. :P Not to mention that they make zero sense with FUNi's removal of the vocals for the insert songs on the 5.1 dub track, and the random instrumentals on the broadcast track.

Either way, I mostly meant in a general sense, which while I haven't quite seen this exact style duplicated, I've seen many other "harsh" style changes in other anime with really goofy scenes.

Anyway, this indeed has driven far too off-topic!

Movie 1 pretty much kept the look of the regular show but yeah one scene in movie 2 was animated chibi style. It seemed pretty well set up though as Gohan's dream sequence so it was kind of expected. Movie 12's scene just kind of popped up out of nowhere. It's cool though I like the stylistic change and by no means would I call it bad or anything. I don't watch many other anime besides Dragon Ball so I hadn't really seen anything like it before.

I'll have to rewatch these episodes soon. I remembered the Goku Vs. Majin Vegeta portion looking pretty good the whole way though.

Yeah, as you see it's not that bad. It's not great, but I don't mind the animation.

The worst IMHO has to be Trunks USSJ vs. Perfect Cell. Painful to watch.

Yeah, the models were really off...because it was Naoki Tate animating the episode. >_<

Those earlier bits of the fight were incredible, though.

And that's why I was wondering. No worries people. I just asked since I was curious. Lol, I know DB is not meant to be HARD CORE ACTION!!!! It all started as a gag manga and retained elements throughout... I am not one of those 10-year old Broly fanboys! I'd watch Son Goku and friends over movie 8 any day.

Agreed. It's very obviously a stylistic choice as while the scene looks "weird" it also looks good. It's well drawn and well animated.

And I just want to let you know that if it weren't for your avatar I'd have never discovered Dragon Half, the manga or the sadly incomplete OVA. Thank you. Thank you 1,000 times.

I don't understand why people say that fight looks the worst.

The fight basically went from 163-166.

163 looked decent, 164 looked fantastic, 165 was pretty bad, and 166 also looked fantastic.

Here, check out this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tKB0cS-BNI

Everything looks great up until 8:50 where scenes from 165 are used.

I agree that 165 is bad, but the worst? No way, there's much much worse.

I had to do this:

Image
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Hm... How'd you know it was called Dragon Half just by looking at my avatar?

Funny story, I actually discovered Dragon Half around 2005 by seeing someone else's avatar on another forum, looking at the file name and doing a Google search. Glad I was able to pass that experience onto you I suppose. 8)
