I finally understand the Sub fans

Post by LeprikanGT » Fri Jul 23, 2010 11:57 am

How they say the Dub doesnt feel like the show they know and love.

Especially getting into the Ginyu force part of the show, since there were so many voice changes I don't feel like this is the same show and DBZ [the english Dub] I want to get some friends into the show again but I'm detered to by the new voice changes.

Atleast I have a new appreciation and understanding of the Japanese sub fans.

Have any other Dub fans come across this feeling?

A little bit, yes. I was very disappointed with the new Freeza at first, because Ryusei Nakao's performance was the only performance in the original Japanese version of DBZ that I liked (and I LOVED that performance). I was really looking forward to hearing a Ryusei Nakao sound-a-like, and when he didn't, I was like, "Holy CRAP...this must be how sub fans have felt since the beginning! I get it now!"

Then again, I've come to really like the new Freeza. Not as much as Nakao, but he's doing a lot better job than I orignally thought he would when I first heard him. The rest of the Japanese voices just don't sound right to me. To be fair, though, if I had watched the Japanese version first, I'm sure I would feel the same way about the dub. I think the way you're first introduced to something has a huge effect on how you like it.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I've watched the full run of the show in JP and English and I doubt I could point out a single JP voice, but I dont speak JP so maybe thats why.

I was fine with the Frieza voice but the only voice of the Ginyu force I even like anymore in Recoome and that sounds about the same.

Also Dende, it does not sound like Laura Bailey anymore but I reaaally hope they don't cut her out as Kid Trunks. Shes my favorite female VA EVER, and I like that she voiced someone in my favorite show of all time.

Well, as a fan of the Japanese version, I'm enjoying the English dub for Kai more than any other English dub of this material.

Aside from the whole 8000/9000 thing, I've liked the new dub so far; its just the voices that are throwing me off.

I've been waiting to hear certain things and when they come up with a different voice, its like I've lost those scenes.

Personally, I've minded the script for the dub a LOT more then I ever did voice acting. I mean really bad acting never helps but it's the "CAT LOVES FOOD", "Gero was the leader of the Red Ribbion Army", "HAMMER TIME!", "Mondo Cool" and any given bad pun from the Cell saga involving robots or anything robot related that made me wince the most.

Edit: Well I suppose that does go into the show being not what I know and love.

Those scenes are fine! I can see their square, orange parachutes!

B's saying you haven't "lost" those scenes, as they're still there in your orange bricks, while referencing a line from FUNi's dub. It's Tenshinhan's line that goes something like "They're still alive. I can see their parachutes.". Though, in that case, the people were actually blown to smithereens...

Another sub fan? Can't say I blame you. Even though Kai's dub is good and all, the FUNi cast will never beat the Japanese Z dub. It's kind of funny, me and my cousin watched the old Ginyu episodes from the first DVD release from 2000 today.
....
God was it painful.

I can't believe how awful everyone was, even Sonny Strait. What the hell was up with Schemmel's Nail?!
A Dragon Ball/Urusei Yatsura crossover would be awesome.
Having Toshio Furukawa balance between Piccolo and Ataru would be hilarious.

A couple months ago I rented the first disk from the singles release of season four (the Garlic Jr arc), and I could've done a better job. It was painful...

Well, Kai seems to be the only English dub that I can, somewhat, stand to watch now. The Japanese version rarely annoys me.

I think it annoys a lot of people (at least sometimes). I mean, Toei Animation gave us Bulma and the Crabs... >_<

I know what you mean, LeprikanGT. It's been hard for me to adjust to this new Bulma when I've been hearing and enjoying Tiffany Vollmer's take on the character for all these years. I guess Bulma's voice actor changing is a small price to pay for an accurate dub. All in all, I can live with it.

Your comment has indicated that you only take issue with the change because you were so used to the previous voice. I could be wrong, but that's what I got out of it. I was used to it before, even though I had qualms with it, but even then, I try to be as open minded as possible, and as a result I have grown used to, and even have grown to prefer every recast so far (well, except for Oolong, which just sounds like an immitation).

If you give it repeated viewings, and you try to be as open-minded as possible towards it, you may very will grow to like Rial's Bulma, likely more than Volmer's. Really, I was in love with Z's dub, and had nearly every line ingrained into my mind, as well as every voice and delivery. I couldn't imagine a dub of Z being any other way, but with Kai's new dub, that has definitely changed. I was open to the new castings at the beginning, but I was slightly disappointed by them at the start. Looking back, I'm sure it was due to the new actors getting into their roles, as they seem to have gotten there by several episodes in.

Gohan sounded annoying at first, but Clinkenbeards performance was always infinitely more realistic and age appropriate than Nadolny's Gohan, which even though I loved as a kid, I realized he didn't actually sound like a kid of his age. Gohan was supposed to sound annoying in the beginning, and Clinkenbeard has perfectly captures Gohan's growing personality throughout the series so far, and sounds realistic and natural at this point. Nadolny also delivered her lines as Gohan pretty weakly as well. I was watching movie 6 the other day, and when Gohan is plowing through one of the robots, Nadolny's scream is just pitiful there... Clinkenbeards screaming in the scene where Gohan kicks Dodoria and Krillin comes in to save Dende was also leagues above Nadolny's version of that scene. I have a feeling that Gohan will pretty much sound like Luffy when he comes out of the Room of Spirit and Time (I really hope they don't keep the "Hyperbolic Time Chamber" in the Kai dub).

Rial doesn't have that shrill, cracky, whiny sound in her voice that Volmer had, which even got to me as a kid (though I still liked it because I was used to it). She also sounds more age appropriate, whereas Volmer sounded about 10-20 years older than Bulma was at this point in the series (she sounded more appropriate during the Buu arc though.) Rial can sound cute when she needs to, and annoying when Bulma is being annoying. It sounds more appropriate and natural than Volmer did. Volmer's actual delivery wasn't half bad though, outside of Season Three and most of Four (like most of the cast in Z).

Really, I've been recently watching old Z dub episodes and movies, and it really is very hard to go back to a dub which I find inferior at this point. There are still plenty of voices and performances that I still genuinely think are alright, but I really can't go back for anything other than nostalgia at this point, as, to me, there is a much superior dub available and being worked on at this point.

I don't think Kai is perfect, but I think it actually works much better dubbed. I just can't imagine the Japanese cast against the newer feeling of the show and music, because they just sound too old-school kung-fu flick, martial artsy compared to the newer music and pacing, which don't really reflect that any longer (but are still quite good). Not to mention the generally weaker performances and recasts which genuinely hurt the show. I don't think you can replace the Japanese original "dub" of Z, but I think that the dub for Kai actually works much better.

That is false. I took issue with the change because I thought her replacment voice was inferior to her original voice. I have prefered most of the other replacement voices.
