Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion

I think Cipher was making a funny, y'know because it took so long for the planet to explode.

Hey, hey, Blue got it.
I'm going to put it out there right now that I would lose all respect for myself if I ever entertained a serious debate about Dragon Ball's non-existent space logistics. I even pointed out last page that Vegeta uses Earth minutes for no reason other than the fact that he exists within a children's manga. He can reference hours or nano-clicks or cycles for all I care.

Guys, I don't know if this is any indication, but I had no problem whatsoever with the "24/7 day" line. I didn't even think twice about it. The script's been so good, little things like that hardly matter, even to nitpicky me.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
So did the Ocean group ever go about making a Kai dub? Or did it end up being a false rumor? I didn't think it would make for much of a topic, so I'm leaving the question here. Has anyone heard or seen anything?
Honestly, I'd like to see Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil reprise their roles as Vegeta and Piccolo respectively, with accurate dialogue. Take their dubbing of movie 3 for example. It came out really good because their casting and especially dialogue was excellent. Too bad the guy who voiced Turles wasn't utilized more. I almost wonder if he would have made a good Cell. His voice was certainly sinister enough... but I'm getting off-topic so I'll shut up now.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I believe I already have. No need to be snarky about it. It's just a casual idiom that doesn't seem like something that Vegeta would say unless it was being used as purposely self-referential, like his imagined "letter to Freeza" that was played for laughs. It would be just as odd and out of character if Goku started using physics terms, Piccolo began speaking in "street" slang, or if Freeza said something to the effect of, "Whatever turns you on, big boy."
Oh, wait...
Suffice it to say that characters have personalities, and to a certain extent that dictates what words will come out of their mouths. And on occasion, someone can drop the ball on that. And it's not just FUNimation's dub. I remember feeling quite the same way when, on Simmons's subtitles during Goku's fight with Vegeta, he had Goku say something like, "That was a terrible miscalculation on my part." It's just not something you would expect Goku to say. Same for this.

Can someone post what the line was exactly? It had something to do with "24/7 sun", didn't it?

I've been a Z dub fan for years, after watching the Kai dub for a long while, I decided to go back and watch the Z dub. Now I just find the Z dub really annoying and hard to listen to, anyone else having that problem?
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
It actually kinda made me a little less critical of that portion of the dub because as I was watching the Kai dub, I was thinking, "You know, this shit really isn't all that different from what I've already been watching over and over again for the past 3 years. I wasted my money." although that's my perception on Kai in general.Codarik wrote:I've been a Z dub fan for years, after watching the Kai dub for a long while, I decided to go back and watch the Z dub. That's because you don't care much for quality. Be in it dialogue, performance, or accuracy to what the story is. You go off what you saw first, anything after that simply isn't good enough for you.jjgp1112 wrote:It actually kinda made me a little less critical of that portion of the dub because as I was watching the Kai dub, I was thinking, "You know, this shit really isn't all that different from what I've already been watching over and over again for the past 3 years. You've made that much clear this far in, you seem to have your own idea Dragon Ball, separated from most others. Not that that's a bad thing.... but it makes you come off really annoying when you try and shit on everybody else's parade when we get stuff like Kai.
No offence, but it's like you're crying for attention. You just seem to be beating the same point around constantly.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well then, I must despise Vegeta's voice now, since it's about 2 octaves deeper than it was when I first watched it.
I should hate Kai's score because it's different from the dub score, even though I actually think it's one of the best aspects of Kai.
I should despise the manga since it's apparently so much different from the version of the anime I watched for years.
I didn't even hate Frieza's new voice until he started doing the angry stuff.
I should hate all of the Ginyu Force recasts, even though I thought all of them, especially Jeice and Ginyu, were better than the original dub voices.
Hell, I probably hadn't actually watched a single episode of Dragon Ball Z besides the Saiyan saga in about 5 years when I first bought the Season sets, so I likey had no real recollection of the stuff I liked, anyway. Watching the Frieza and Android saga 2 years ago episodes were like watching it for the first time again.
Have anymore things to say, Rory? Because I can go on forever with stuff that I should hate by your logic.
And more importantly, who are you to say I don't care about quality? Oh, please.

I agree with Rory. And to add, you did the same thing when the Dragon Boxes were announced. Funi puts out something that fans who don't like the Z dub can get excited about, and because you do like the Z dub you seem to go out of your way to voice your dislike of the new product, almost like you're purposely trying to annoy the people that are looking forward to it because you can't stand that these people don't like something that you cherish and are praising something that goes against it. That's just how your posts come off to me.Rory wrote:You've made that much clear this far in, you seem to have your own idea Dragon Ball, separated from most others. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
The Kai dub made me even more critical of the terrible DBZ dub. Until the Kai dub I had zero interest in any FUNI dub relating to the Dragon ball franchise. Now the Kai dub comes along and I can come to appreciate, and even love some of the English roles. It's not a perfect dub, I have seen better, but, compared to deeebeeezeee it's a freaking masterpiece. In many cases it's literally a night and day difference in quality. It's respectable and not without its flaws, but overall enjoyable and for the most part captures the spirit of the original story. Today's kids are very lucky, they also get the added bonus of lots of filler bullshit being cut out.

I actually like a lot of the filler (not all of it but most of it.) Whether some like it or not, DBZ and it's filler are the original adaption of the manga, not Kai.MR.Mark wrote:The Kai dub made me even more critical of the terrible DBZ dub. Back on topic, yeah kids today are lucky.
A Dragon Ball/Urusei Yatsura crossover would be awesome.
Having Toshio Furukawa balance between Piccolo and Ataru would be hilarious.

I heard 18 will have a new voice actress. Please be someone like this.
She'd do an awesome 18.

It would probably be Stephanie Young, considering how similar her voice is to Meredith McCoy.mysticboy wrote:I heard 18 will have a new voice actress. Please be someone like this.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
The manga is the original story, not DBZ, both Kai and DBZ are adaptions. I just feel Kai is better in a lot of ways to the DBZ adaption. During, the "DBZ" portion in the manga, Toriyama had evolved the story style into almost pure action. So in a sense, DBZ fails in this regard due to horrid pacing, despite it's memorable music, acting, or at times, filler.Cowboy Dev wrote: Whether some like it or not, DBZ and it's filler are the original adaption of the manga, not Kai.

I worded it wrong. DBZ is the original anime adaptation, not Kai. Despite flaws, I still overall think DBZ is better for the things you listed. It's just more memorable. Kai is cool to watch for free on TV but that's about it.MR.Mark wrote:The manga is the original story, not DBZ, both Kai and DBZ are adaptions. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well like I said, we all have fond memories for DBZ in various ways. I however still can't get over how terrible the pacing is in the DBZ anime. Kai is a MAJOR improvement in that regard. With DBZ, I don't really have to "like it or not", that's the beauty of Kai. It's existence gives me the choice of which adaption of the manga I want to watch.
