Single most inappropriate dub line?

Post by Rory » Thu Sep 09, 2010 6:07 pm

There's tons of places in the early FUNimation days where characters would say things which were widly out of character, or would change the intended emotion of a certain scene.... or would just sound plain stupid.
Let's pull together to try and find the most ridiculous FUNimation one-liner!

I'll start things off.

"Hammertime!"

You know you had to pause that shit and realise what you just heard. Goku just said "Hammertime".

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

"I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am protector of the innocent, I am the light in the darkness. I am truth. Ally to good, nightmare to you!" - Goku

To this day, never has a worse line been written for that character.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

In the Goku/Freeza fight, when Freeza is using telekinesis to throw rocks at him, the moment Goku decides to stop dodging and start blasting, he yells, "Hammertime!"

It's not that the line is bad, it's that it's completely out of character.

I wouldn't call this an inappropriate line but it's one of my favorites from the dub, "YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO BUT YOU CAN'T TUNA FISH!!!!!!"

In GT during the Super 17 fight, Super 17 says "I admire your ability to keep fighting" or something like that (Its not really important), and Vegeta says back something like "AND I ADMIRE YOUR ABILITY TO DIE!" hahaha its so bad.

The line is nostalgic to me. When I first watched the series I didnt realise it was that out of character, but having seen it all now it is very out of character for him.

Goku is the hero guy and its something I could picture a hero saying.

cookie for whoever gets the referance

Always a perennial favorite, a hit at a parties, and an insult to tricloptic wranglers:

"Looks like I'm back in the saddle. What luck. This three-eyed cowboy's going for ONE... LAST... RAIIIIIIYYYD!"

Bullshit this was inappropriate. Added where there was no dialogue originally? Sure. But not really inappropriate. That's a lot more faithful to Goku's character than most of his dialogue.

For my own pick, there's a reason the "mondo cool" scene is brought up so often, and that's because it's easily, easily among the worst in the entire series. It's not even so much Krillin saying it, but Vegeta's sinister internal monologue, "That's right boys ... 'mondo cool' ..." that really makes the scene.
In GT during the Super 17 fight, Super 17 says "I admire your ability to keep fighting" or something like that (Its not really important), and Vegeta says back something like "AND I ADMIRE YOUR ABILITY TO DIE!" hahaha its so bad.
Oh, hell yes. I've personally found that line hilarious for years, and have never seen it brought up before. Single worst line of trash talk in the entire dub of all three series. It's like Vegeta forgot his comeback halfway through saying it.

He's had similar failed trash talking experiences.

Inappropriate? I think so.
