Garlic Jr saga. Yes I liked it. Sue me. It was weird jumping from Frieza and Goku dying right to Frieza reappearing on Earth and Trunks.

I loved the beginning and end of the Garlic Jr. arc. Kuririn with a ditzy girlfriend, the characters hanging out at Kame House, Yamucha playing baseball, Umigame's birthday... all of that was awesome. It was when the actual fighting started that it became a real drag.

I concur that Vegeta and Nappa on Arlia was one of the better filler episodes, especially since when I first saw the show dubbed it was one of the few episodes to air almost uncensored, despite how brutal some of it was. Sure, it didn't make much sense for them to play along and let themselves get kidnapped and waste time... Or how Vegeta inexplicably has psychic powers (lifting the rocks, telling Nappa to surrender telepathically... considering Goku does the same thing later on, I guess convenient psychic powers are a Saiyan trait).
Well, I can think of two reasons why the episodes with Marron weren't a complete waste...I loved the beginning and end of the Garlic Jr. arc. I love "The Puzzle of General Tao" and the "Driver's License" episodes.
I don't mind most of the filler. Some of the fighting in the Frieza saga I consider to be bad filler...did they include the no arms fight episode? That was just...ugh...

I always wondered if the Saiyan could contact each other telepathically. Also, they stated that they just wanted to stretch their legs and have a bit of fun so they let themselves be captured. I thought it was cool how they saved the planet and decided to blow it up anyway for no real reason than to be assholes.Zep wrote:I concur that Vegeta and Nappa on Arlia was one of the better filler episodes, especially since when I first saw the show dubbed it was one of the few episodes to air almost uncensored, despite how brutal some of it was. Re: Filler you miss...
Everyone should know by now that all the main characters are masters of the mystical art more commonly known as T'lepathywhenevert'plotrequires't...-ha.
Tenshinhan and Chaozu seem to be the only mortal characters who possess that as a given trait. But then Goku's suddenly speaking in people's heads during the Vegeta fight. When he gets to Namek, he has the power to read Kuririn's mind. And then Piccolo manages to established a psychic link to Gohan all of one time when they're fighting #20. It's something about the series that has always annoyed me. Well, at least Toriyama had the good sense to turn the Namek situation into a joke ("I dunno. I just had a feeling that would work.").

I'm going to have to say the Arlia episode was the filler that I missed the most. I've always had a soft stop for that episode, probably because the Ocean dub actually kept it in. Not to mention off-coloured Vegeta being in it.

What I like about the Arlia episode is just what a total dick Vegeta is and how hilariously tragic it is that he saves the world and then destroys it. Vegeta is the biggest douchbag ever.

Yeah, I feel that episode really exemplified the cruelty of Saiyans.penguintruth wrote:What I like about the Arlia episode is just what a total dick Vegeta is and how hilariously tragic it is that he saves the world and then destroys it. Vegeta is the biggest douchbag ever.
Re: Filler you miss...
I am a lover of filler. Unless it is ridiculous, doesn't suit the original, and contradicts the story (I'm looking at you, "Legend of a Dragon"), I will lap it up. My favorite, of course, one that I know many others love, is the famous driving episode. It is the pinnacle of good ol' filler fun.

I would say it's less the filler in DBZ that's the problem and more of the padding of canon material.

Re: Filler you miss...
I agree. I don't remember the scene, but it seems unlikely to me that they can arrange things so that the fighters don't move, so there's a good chance it will stay.dan2026 wrote:If I remember the scene right, there is no way they are going to be able to cut round that.Gaffer Tape wrote: I'm gonna miss Yamucha and the others trying to blast Cell at the end of the Cell Games.
So expect it to stay. Although probably trimmed somewhat.
I don't consider that kind of stuff "filler" personally, but more "alternate version" for the anime. It is not an added line or moment which takes place before or after the original event of the manga, but a modified one which takes the place of the unmodified event of the manga. I don't know if I make myself clear, but it's not really an added moment, but a "during that scene, they do this instead of that", or something. However, I understand why it is simpler to refer to "anything that doesn't exist in the manga" as "filler", otherwise it'd be complicated to always distinguish this and that.
It's like Vegeta finding out about Goku being a Super Saiyan. While I think it is originally a filler in Z, I consider it an alternate element of the story in Kai: it is not an added scene, but a scene which REPLACES another one, which makes it not an addition, but an alternate (it's not like "Vegeta finds out on Earth in the original, but additionnally, he finds out on Namek", in Kai, it's like "Vegeta finds out on Namek INSTEAD of finding out on Earth"). I think in that case, it's eventually a same scene, but with an alternate interpretation: instead of not moving and watching, they decide to help Gohan. So, all of this to say I don't consider alternative versions as fillers, but I understand why everybody else does, I just like to complicate things!

My words exactly.penguintruth wrote:I would say it's less the filler in DBZ that's the problem and more of the padding of canon material.
And the main reason for me why Dragon Ball Kai is a lot better series to watch and enjoy.
Re: Filler you miss...
He really is. Vegeta is a total asshole. I still can't get over Vegeta saying, "Being a hero is highly overrated" because... well you know.penguintruth wrote:What I like about the Arlia episode is just what a total dick Vegeta is and how hilariously tragic it is that he saves the world and then destroys it. Minus some of the Toriyama-inspired filler in the Saiyan arc, I've missed absolutely nothing cut in the Freeza arc. Nothing really memorable has been cut in the artificial human/Cell arc so far. I have a feeling I will feel the same way about the Buu arc.

A lot of the filler in that arc (as far as I can tell) are just random asides with sidelines characters and dragging out canon material too much. So there really isn't much to miss in the first place.MR.Mark wrote:Minus some of the Toriyama-inspired filler in the Saiyan arc, I've missed absolutely nothing cut in the Freeza arc. If they cut out fights like Base Gotenks VS Buu, extended Cell jrs vs Z fighters and Base Vegetto vs Buu then I'll miss those. And Pikkon.

Re: Filler you miss...
The thing is, in the manga it's not that they don't help, it's that they can't. The blast of the Kamehamehas colliding knocks everybody away, and just as they're all standing up again, Vegeta intervenes.Cold Skin wrote:I think in that case, it's eventually a same scene, but with an alternate interpretation: instead of not moving and watching, they decide to help Gohan.
Base Vegetto is the only filler I'm gonna miss, if it is cut. I guess the driving episode too, but I just can't get too sad about any of the filler removal with how much good it does.
Re: Filler you miss...
Exactly, for every one fun "Yamcha is a baseball player" filler scenes, you have countless "stare downs and look at the panning scenery" bullshit. In the long run there is very little to miss, when it comes to the narrative.Kendamu wrote:A lot of the filler in that arc (as far as I can tell) are just random asides with sidelines characters and dragging out canon material too much.
