Why is Buu so hated?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Still, it's only slightly more than what Buu had.

The reason why the Buu story arc is often hated is because it's so ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it very much, but you have to admit that it is pretty much Toriyama trying to come up with something new and original over and over again, just to get the story down. Super Saiyan was already played out, so Toriyama introduced fusion. But then that wasn't enough, so he introduced another Super Saiyan form. That didn't really do much, so he had to reintroduce fusion, and then finally bring back the good ole' Genki Dama for some final closure on the story.

Aside from that, the whole Buu saga continues a good franchise that would've ended better earlier. Personally, the Freeza story arc ending was perfect. The Cell saga, albeit Toriyama continually making up new things to satisfy fans and editors, was well done, and the ending pretty satisfactory. The ending with the Buu saga...though I would've liked the previously mentioned endings, the Buu ending was more satisfactory, with all that characters and the dragon balls contributing to the battle and all, and Son going away like he usually does at the end of every story arc.

I still like the Buu saga, and when I feel like reading Dragon Ball, I usually pick up a volume #36 or higher.

Hmm. I can't say I've really looked at what made Buu tick, and VegettoEX's outlook has made me look at Fat Buu differently.

I agree with the entire sentence. Truth be told I prefer Piccolo to Vegeta, but that's a discussion for another time.
Conan the SSJ wrote:Indeed, and that aspect of the story doesn't happen again until the Dark Dragons arc in GT, which kind of made me like the Dark Dragons arc just a bit more because of that concept.
I can't say I've looked at the arc that way. I always see it as a punishment for greed, seeing as how the characters use DBs a lot over the years, and because of that I liked it. Though the "haunting past" issue is good as well.

Perhaps if Akira took the time to write it better it could have worked. I don't know if he was rushed to write it (sometimes I get that feeling). Also if he was able to do what he wanted again I feel the series could have been better. Why is it the evil side of Buu is original shown as a skinny grey Buu then later like an insane child? My answer is because he wanted Gohan to beat Super Buu, but as most of us know his editor and/or fans didn't want Gohan to be the hero again and instead wanted Goku (I personally prefered to see Gohan as the hero as I prefered him to his father).

For me it was because, in all of the other arcs before it, there was some immense event to occur in it. Saiya-jin arc which answered questions about Goku's origins, and the appearence of a future main character (Vegeta), among other things. Freeza arc which included Goku's first transfomation into SSJ, and more answers to things in the DB universe. Cell arc which concludes things that happened way back in the original DB, as well as Goku's son surpassing him in power, reaching SSJ2.

Buu arc is where the show really did start settling into repetitiveness. I didn't care about Goku's transformation into SSJ3 because we had already seen him reach a higher level. It wasn't special anymore. The enemy lacked charm because he was such a dumbass. The only time I took a liking to him was when he absorbed a couple of the Z Senshi. Once he reverted to Kid Buu was when I was annoyed by him once again. The only thing this arc had going for it was the development given to Vegeta; finally admitting Goku's superiority.

I'm not saying the Buu arc was bad -- I didn't hate it at all. I enjoy all the time I get to spend with some of my favorite characters in anime. But no, to me it doesn't live up to the material that came before it.

Well the Gohan saving the day senerio would have been re-hashed for a third time if Toriyama had him kill Buu (the first time when Gohan put Vegeta down for the count for good when he fell on him as an Ozaru, the second time when he kills Cell). Also, I like the fact that the new super form wasen't the deciding factor in destroying the villian like with Freeza and Cell (SSJ3 never did anything significant like that). Also worth noting is the fact that this is the only time in DBZ where Goku actually kills the villian himself (he didin't kill Freeza, just beat him) and even then he didin't do it on his own since Vegeta masterminded the whole plan to do it.

The Buu saga isn't as formulaic as most people make it seem.

Buu is just so cheap:

First Vegeta blows him to bits. Those bits regenerate. Ok, that's acceptable.

Then Gotenks coms along and burns every bit of Majin Buu but somehow Majin Buu becomes a cloud and is alive again.

Then Vegito lets himselve be absorbed wich makes little sence considering they still had the DragonBalls thanks to Dende.

Then Gohan cokmes along with all his powers only to job to Buu. I mean, everytime there's a cheap trick to keep Buu alive. Furthermore in the English version Buu's voice is enormously irritating. He's the reason I still play my japanese compy of Budokai 2 in spite of having B3.

First of all, Gohan came before Vegetto showed up
Second, Vegetto didn't want to kill his loved ones (would you? )

Though, I do agree. Gotenks should have killed Buu (Goku kills the original Piccolo, Gohan kills Perfect Cell, Goten (along with help from Trunks) kills Buu. See :P ). Problem was, he was too childish :?

That was another thing I liked about the series up to the Freeza saga, no stupid good guys who don't take care of business.

Earth Dragonballs can only wish someone back once, Piccolo had already been wished back once.

Vegetto didn't let himself get absorbed. He was being cocky and gave Buu ten seconds or something, and during that time, Buu used a piece of his, um, head thing to sneak behind Vegetto and absorb him. But yes, Buu is very cheap. He is virtually unsubduable because since he possesses overwhelming power, and is able to revive to his utmost power even after being blown to bits. Because of this, he has virtually unlimited energy.

Though Cell is the "ultimate villain," being composed of nearly all major villains in the series, Buu is the true perfect villain, in that he is unstoppable. He is a relentless force that can only be defeated by something far greater than he is. The mere concept of Buu is enough to tick people off.

I was pretty sure Supreme Kai said that Vegetto was letting himself get absorbed so he could save the others (at least, that's what the dub and my translated manga lead me to believe).

Vegetto mentions (while thinking) that he went out of his way to chop off Buu's antenna so he's catch on to the fact the he could absorb him. He got absorbed on purpose.

I don't see why that would tick people off as long as he can be stopped, which he was. It's not like he was immortal (damn near it though).

Plus, Vegetto also put up the barrier just before he got absorbed, so that he wasn't actually integrated and was able to move freely inside. It was all totally preconceived.

Bah, and I was under the notion that he it was an accident...

Buu's power makes weaker characters seem useless. Whereas before, the weaker characters could contribute a little to the fight, with Buu, only the most powerful characters could put up a fight--and even then, Buu would just revive himself. And if that's not enough, he absorbs the fighters to become even stronger. That's enough to wet the pants of the dieties of the universe. That's why the Genki Dama was used in the end; it allows every character to contribute to the fight. If video games were able to capture the true essence of Buu, he would be pretty much near god-mode.

That's why if I were to be any character in the Dragon Ball universe, I'd be Buu.

If any DB character is using GodMode, it had to be Vegetto.

The full fighting prowess, skill, and sheer power of Goku and Vegeta, vastly increased by the power of Fusion, and it's a permanant fusion?
