Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
I really hate the fact that everywhere I go there are "fans" who could stop supporting Dragonball just because of this voices, I grew up with the Latino Dub and I have enjoyed the english dub (except for Grandma frieza and ondrugs Gohan) ever since I heard it, Same goes with the Japanese and I love the so on called "Contipated child" Voice of Goku.

Although the arguing should stop, with that viewpoint shouldn't we sell all our Dragon Ball stuff and give the proceeds to charities?.:PoetikaL:. wrote:It is what it is, and let's be real... There are far worse things happening in the world today, from wars to hunger, and we're here talking about how it's the end of the world that Nadolny isn't voicing Kid Goku, and about the dub vs. sub argument, and so on. Just be happy we're getting this released, and having a (hopefully) faithful script. This is more than what we can ask for.
Carry on.
I'm fine with the change. I'll watch the Japanese version, but since I loved watching dubbed Dragon Ball when I was younger it'll be great to see how it's evolved.

Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
A proper bi-lingual release of this movie has been missing for years, so I'm glad that FUNimation has finally gotten around to it. If it weren't for that darned JUMP special (and now the reanimated "Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans" feature included with Raging Blast 2, as well) showing up unexpectedly, I'd say that DragonBall as a series is finally up-to-date and finished so far as uncut American releases go.
Nadolny has always been "my" Gohan. I do miss her in Kai. However, since I wasn't expecting that she would return for any further DB-related dubbing I never got my hopes up enough to be disappointed by her absence here. There's a whole series with her portrayal of Kid Goku, and that's plenty enough for me to enjoy the role.
I have always had mixed feelings about Clickenbeard, but in all honesty this uncertainty probably stems from a combination of A) being used to Nadolny and B) having not had enough time with which to take in the English dub of Kai. I've seen maybe the first few episodes, and that's it. Suupaa Gohan 2 is the one that's caught up with how Kai has played out in terms of acting and script, which she thoroughly recommends-- by contrast, I haven't even heard the new Freeza yet. And to think that it's usually me between the two of us that's on top of things so far as DB goes. X_@
I'm happy for any good treatment that DragonBall gets by means of an strong dub, even if the voices coming out of the characters ain't all the ones I'm used to. This movie especially has needed to see the light of day for a long time, so it makes sense that FUNimation would use this highly-anticipated release as a springboard with which to feature their new cast. I will absolutely purchase this. ^_^
Wake me up when news of Kara Edwards as Goten surfaces with regard to Kai.

Likely, yes, but by no means a certainty. The Boo arc is still distant enough on the horizon that I doubt any serious decisions have been made yet so far as dubbing goes. Still, here's hoping. ^_^penguintruth wrote:Seems likely, with her voicing him in Raging Blast 2 and Tenkaichi Tag Team.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Wake me up when news of Kara Edwards as Goten surfaces with regard to Kai.
Do you have any particular problems with her in that role, PT? o.o

Most of the casting done for the Buu arc was top-notch.

Video game voices haven't been end-all indicators though. With Nadolny coming in to voice both Gohan and Goku in over 9 games since the series ended, as recently as early 2010 even.penguintruth wrote:Seems likely, with her voicing him in Raging Blast 2 and Tenkaichi Tag Team.
I don't mean to be the typical negative nancy. I sure hope she comes back because she'll do a great job with Goten.

Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
I have a good feeling that Edwards will be invited back to reprise both roles, personally. And at any rate, it does me just fine to see this much support for her efforts in the original dub-- particularly penguintruth, whom I know to be especially discerning in his opinions.
And now that Lemmy has singlehandedly derailed the thread into unscheduled Goten-ness, how about that thar movie? ^_^;

I haven't read through the entire thread (despite that I apparently should), but I'm curious as to why. Is it because Nadolny is not in the role?

That seems to pretty much be the jist of it. That, and the fact that some of the other FUNi dub actors won't be back as well.Li'l Lemmy wrote:I haven't read through the entire thread (despite that I apparently should), but I'm curious as to why. Is it because Nadolny is not in the role?

But it seems to be mainly Nadolny in general.
I for one welcome a new dub cast. I'm pretty easy-going when it comes to dub voice actor replacements.

Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
You guys are nerds. And the original DB anime is nowhere near as popular as Z, or even GT. Especially outside of this forum. Despite the fact that I absolutely loathe Nadolny's Gokuu, I guess I can somewhat understand why you'd feel upset about the recasting. But, from an objective perspective, do you seriously think you're the majority in this situation? I mean, from all I've seen over the years, I honestly believe the masses probably won't notice or care about this casting change. And it would hardly be the first DB movie without Nadolny.
The way I look at this release is, they never had to do it at all. FUNimation has never viewed DB in the same light as DBZ. While they were selling DBZ at $25 for 3 episodes, they sold DB at $40 for 15 episodes, because they just had no faith it could sell at DBZ's price range. And DB Movie 2 never even got a single disc release; they threw it in a box and made everyone who'd bought the other DB movies double dip.
They could have easily slapped both the edited Ocean version and a separate uncut Japanese version onto one disc, but instead, they actually went to the effort of doing a new dub for this release. They apparently thought people might be willing to shell out for a new dub with their current Kai casting options. And maybe they were wrong about that. But the way I view it is: beggars can't be choosers. It's a niche release, and dubbing is an expensive process. The American anime industry isn't exactly at its high point nowadays. You're lucky to be getting this DVD at all, especially with a brand new dub.
Here's another issue: Some people are upset that PtEtSS didn't have a dub, and the JSAT has yet to be dubbed either. There are plenty of older things that have never been dubbed either (the original OVA, the safety specials, etc). And we could very well end up getting other new specials, too. Would you guys boycott English releases of those over similar casting problems? Would you really prefer to have nothing instead of something?

Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
Just read through the bulk of this thread. I had no idea that feelings for who gets cast where ran so strongly.
Speaking for me personally, I can come to terms with Nadolny's absence because I expected as much. The particulars of how and why she was let go were unhappy ones, but she has managed to move on and so should we. And that's coming from someone who likes to think of himself as a pretty big fan of her work in those roles. ^_^
There's plenty of Nadolny recorded elsewhere in the DB universe that I'm willing to overlook the casting change here, and I'll admit that I have not heard enough of Clickenbeard to form an intelligent opinion with regards to either Gohan or Goku. Here's yet another opportunity for that.

They do. Put it this way, if Curse of the Blood Rubies was a completely new movie, and right before it's release it was announced that Nozawa would be replaced as Gokū, with no explanation given, then I'm willing to bet a similar thing would happen. My fellow fans of the Japanese version are being so dissmissive about this, because it's happening to the dub and that's not the version that we watch or have a big connection to.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Just read through the bulk of this thread. And you're making a false equivalency by assuming Naldony is anywhere in the ballpark as beloved and iconic as Nozawa. Which is pretty clear, given that it's a handful of people even giving a damn that Naldony was replaced.
But hey, if she's your Nozawa, my condolences. I'd be pretty upset if Nozawa was replaced.

Re: Curse of the Blood Rubies WILL Have a New Dub--CONFIRMED
I would have to agree with penguintruth. This is not to say that Nadolny does not have her fair share of fans-- I'm quite sure that she does. Hell, I count myself among them. But to suggest that she's anywhere near Nozawa in terms of popularity may be somewhat flawed. Rather, it can be argued that the "equivalency" comes from the fact that Nadolny fans (and fans of the dub in general) tend to be extremely vocal, giving what may be an otherwise modest amount of people a louder voice than its numbers would otherwise suggest.
That's just my opinion, though, and not meant to be a malicious one in any way.
