How Dragonball Kai should have looked:

This would have been awsome, a new take on the old art style:

It would have cost waaaay to much to redo DBZ from scratch.
Especially considering the anime industry is slumping in Japan at the moment.

It would cost too much for Toei. They're horribly cheap. Fullmetal Alchemist is having a full, far more manga accurate remake that is animated very well. Hell, it's doing worse than Kai on TV ratings, yet they still keep at it. I don't see Toei honestly breaking themselves on Kai, unless you count paying for pop bands to do themes and voice work, the worthless, inane, lazy, sons of a...*leaves grumbling before fan rage breaks out*

But, the point still stands, it should have looked like that.

Like mewzard said, they are doing it for Full Metal Alchemist and I`m pretty sure that a remake of Dragon Ball is much more profitable worldwide than a remake of Full Metal Alchemist this soon after the first series.

Toei is just cheap. They just wanted to milk DBZ by adding a few effects on some scenes, cutting others scenes out of it, by making a new audio and finally, by renaming it and selling it suggesting its a different remade show, when this is not the case at all... Its more of a director`s cut than anything, really...

They are smart though... By doing this they make a lot of money with very little costs... But, like I said, its just a very cheap attitude.

Anyway, I like the art in that image. It kind of blends the new with the old I think. But I would prefer if the hair wasn`t that "shiny".

Bones isn't known for doing 100+ episode series'.

Also, Toei's busy enough with One Piece as is. It's cheaper and easier to not completely redo Z. And just because something is profitable doesn't mean it's gonna result in top notch animation. Don't forget that even when Z was in its prime in Japan, they still recruited some awful animation teams.

Besides, that's a still piece of artwork. Not animation. You seriously CANNOT compare animation with still pieces of artwork.

And Digimon Xros Wars, which is a pretty awesome show. Digimon Xros Wars seems to be getting more care than One Piece is, though (likely because it'll only be a year long). One Piece--like Dragon Ball Z before it--is caught in a cycle of using one or two really good animation teams and a lot of generally poor or uninspiring teams. Then again that might just be the writing and storyboarding not providing the animation teams with anything interesting to draw and animation...

Were a new series to be made (remake or otherwise) I'd like to see it be an off-shoot of what we have been seeing in the new animation as of late. Were I interested in looking at the old art styles I'd actually go back and look at the old art. "That was then, this is now" so to speak...

I feel like I've seen that person's art style on previous official DB products; I do like it. :3

And yes, I so wish Toei wasn't so cheap. TT_TT

I'm still holding out for a new 2D DB movie under the Kai moniker before the series is over.

I don't know why there's such a problem with Kai being only a director's cut when Naruto and Bleach fans would kill to have this treatment on their anime. XD

I agree that new animation would be sweet.

I still say they'll reanimate it for the 30th anniversary or something.

However, it's a damn shame how cheap they are. It's hard to watch some episodes of DBZ when they used some of the more mediocre animation teams. One Piece has really been taking a hit animation-wise as well, lately.

I've found One Piece to be all across the board too, in terms of animation quality. The lows aren't nearly as bad as Dragon Ball's lows though.

I'd love new animation like everyone else but if a reanimated Kai was gonna look like that, than I'm glad they chose to simply remaster old footage. I don't like this shiny glossy art style at all, it doesn't look right on Dragonball :(

I'd also prefer if the Dragon Ball characters didn't look like they were laminated.

This is how I wanted Kai to look like
Recolor Piccolo's chest and arms and it's perfect in my opinion.

The old art style is how Toriyama's art looks, not some kid's idea who's like, "I want to update it! Modern is better!"
I hate this art style, nobody's muscles are THAT defined. If you notice in the old style is the lines really change if they're angry and tense compared to when they're happy; for example the muscle definitions.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada
