I generally hear Bull-ma when they say it, I'm not sure what you're trying to say.The Time Traveller wrote:Remember when Gokuh fought the Red Ribon army?
I'd say Bulma is a good way of writing Buruma in English, it's an anagram of Bluma=Blooma=Bloomer=Bloomers!
Just don't say it the way they do in the dub, they say it as Bolma for some reason, it should be like Bull-ma.

They still call her Bol-ma in the English dub. Bull, as in the animal, I'm not sure if Americans say it any different, it should be kinda like Bool, only not a long sound like pool.Mewzard wrote:I generally hear Bull-ma when they say it, I'm not sure what you're trying to say.The Time Traveller wrote:Remember when Gokuh fought the Red Ribon army?

Re: Nicktoons Kai Descriptions on FiOS?
On the grossly off-topic name puns:
If you actually care about keeping Bulma's pun intact in English, "Blooma" is far and above the most accurate way to do so. I'd wager that the only reason "Bulma" is used at all is because it's on her shirt in the first chapter/episode, and it seems like every romanization worldwide has taken that cue. But really, it's just another case of Toriyama Engrish.
As for Kuririn/Krillin/whatever, if you actually care about keeping that pun intact, it should be "Kurilin," which no one ever seems to use. We usually spell "Shaolin" as opposed to "Shaorin," so the same logic should apply to "Kuririn." Oh well. Since no one uses that, I personally prefer "Krillin," as the pronunciation is more obvious and it at least adds the "krill" pun for his height.

His cap says "Kulilin" so that should be the right version IMO. Just like "Battle Power" being used, even though when Bulma uses it, it's "Fight Power."Cipher wrote:As for Kuririn/Krillin/whatever, if you actually care about keeping that pun in tact, it should be "Kurilin," which no one ever seems to use. I feel slightly validated, even though it's probably all coincidence, that some people are using my spellings for the names. I know I definitely spell it "Kurilin" nowadays, and "Blooma".

I once played what I think was an official French translation (according to GameFAQs) of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive Dragon Ball Z game "Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden", and I believe it used "Kurilin". Anyone know if that's the name the French dub (or manga translations) officially uses for the character, or if it was just for that game?Cipher wrote:it should be "Kurilin," which no one ever seems to use.

Well, here's how they pronounce his name in the French dub.Metalwario64 wrote:I once played what I think was an official French translation (according to GameFAQs) of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive Dragon Ball Z game "Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden", and I believe it used "Kurilin". NOTE: The sudden switch to the American English dub when Krillin explodes is an edit on the part of the video uploader to maintain visual continuity. That shot was edited out of the French dub, and was never dubbed. Nor was it dubbed for any of the European countries since they all received their footage from France. Well, except for Italy, who I'm told is the only European country to eventually go back and dub the censored scenes once they got a hold of the censored footage from the AB Groupe. Other European countries did get uncut releases, but it was just that--uncut releases, not uncut dubs. For censored scenes, the audio would momentarily switch over to the Japanese audio and the subtitles would momentarily turn on. The sudden change from Goku's French voice to Masako Nozawa's voice when he screams, however, is NOT an edit. The French dub was notorious for not dubbing a lot of the battle noises. They dubbed a few here and there, but for the most part the battle noises--grunts, screams, power-up cries, even attack cries on occasion--were left in Japanese.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Nicktoons Kai Descriptions on FiOS?
Shouldn't it be BOOL-mah (like Luffy [LOO-fee])? I mean, if it's a pun on bloomers, then it should at least have the same OO sound. The Time Traveller wrote:They still call her Bol-ma in the English dub. I used to use Kurilin for a while, and I know other people have brought up the reason it makes the most sense. But even still, I ended up sticking to Kulilin because that's Toriyama's spelling, and I think it works just as well. Better than Bulma anyways.Ashy-kun wrote:I feel slightly validated, even though it's probably all coincidence, that some people are using my spellings for the names. Re: Nicktoons Kai Descriptions on FiOS?
I believe one of the chapter covers in the manga has it. There was a topic on spellings used in the manga a while ago, but I can't seem to find it just now. Let me get back to you on that.

There's only so far you can go with how certain things get spelled in Japanese, with Roman letters. I distinctly remember a flashback of Cell's, in the anime at least, where on computer screens regarding his stats, his name was spelt "Sal".
Also, if we go for the names that Japanese spell out, you sometimes lose a lot in translation, and we'd get weird approximated spellings like "Zyuranger".

Re: Nicktoons Kai Descriptions on FiOS?
That's kind of my point. The anime also claims that Yamcha's special attack is the "Rouga Who Who Ken," and I can see where they're coming from, but that doesn't make it any less silly.

It's funny that you mention that particular instance, as I used that in my Otaku Japanese 101 panel at Amecon 2010, and I just couldn't use that screencap.
