I thought the Kai version of the scene was very poorly done That's one of those scenes that's pretty much required to be longer and more dramatic. The Kai version felt ridiculously rushed.penguintruth wrote:It sounded like his transformation scene was a little better than in Z. I think they added some lines, but I think it helped it not seem so awkward when he's grunting for two minutes.
I can't say I'm fond of the piece of music they used for the transformation in Kai, though. I mean, I realize that in Z they used a track that they often used, but it was so appropriate and made the transformation seem like this big scary thing. The piece in Kai is suspensful, but you could plug it in almost anywhere.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Man that music was horrible. I don't remember the music for this scene in any other versions, but I don't specifically remember thinking "wow, this totally doesn't fit and has been used a million times over."
I have to agree with jjgp. That transformation and everything leading up to it was just horribly paced.
The dialog and acting was great though. I really liked Schemmel's scream. That man has some pipes.

My only problem with Kai's transformation scene is the music used. I really wished they had used Super Dragon Soul. I've seen some fanmade vids of the scene, with Super Dragon Soul used, and damn, they're really really good.

If they had used 'Super Dragon Soul' they would've missed the whole point of the scene. The transformation sequence is suppose to be 'Hang on, what's going on here?" rather than "Man, this scene is epic! Goku is so badass!".Flamingwindjutsu wrote:My only problem with Kai's transformation scene is the music used. I really wished they had used Super Dragon Soul. I know the scene happens in a flash in the manga, but in the video games, which did the transformation just as the manga did, it still felt like a big deal. Hell, the movie 5 transformation, which was done in a similar light as the manga version, was also very epic. I think it wouldn't have been nearly as bad if they redid the scene entirely instead of chopping up pre-existing footage. The original anime did the scene so differently that forcing it to be more similar to the manga version was bound for failure. Plus, they used the completely wrong music.

Is there anywhere else you can watch it besides nicktoons.com? This is ridiculous.

The music in Kai when Goku went Super Saiyan was just terrible. It was much better in Dragon Ball Z even if that piece of music was used in a lot of scenes.
The scream Sean did though when he transformed was amazing. Otherwise, the music really ruined the moment for me.

That's why I hope the Kai cast redubs the full show so You can choose from the original or Faulconer score.

Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
That's never going to happen buddy. I've said things that were immediately proven wrong (FUNimation releasing the Dragon Boxes, for example). But I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt, FUNimation has neither the time, money, or interest to redub a 250+ episode catalog title.
I don't mean to rain on your parade or put your hopes and dreams down. I'm simply pointing it out so you don't get your hopes up. It's just beyond improbable.

I wish that the Kai cast would re-dub DBZ too so we could have Kikuchi's score. However, I know that will never happen which sucks.mystic trunks wrote:That's why I hope the Kai cast redubs the full show so You can choose from the original or Faulconer score.

It's allie to good and nightmare to you. Dragon Ball Z Kai is fucking up my childhood. The theme song to this is gay as shit. It needs Rock the Dragon, and Bruce Faulconer. Their music actually fits the mood. Also, the voice acting sucks compared to DBZ. Gohan and Bulma are annoying. Do not get me started on Frieza. He was supposed to talk gay which makes him funny.
You can't win them all can you.Although this scene is epic, it still can't match to the original Funi version i my opinion. i don't think the speech was as good, and the music kinda ruined it. and...frieza just sounds like and old woman who's dying.

All Will Be Well, Brother Inna.

My geeky references aside, I can't help but believe in Funi on this. They're slow at doing these good things for DB, but they do always end up doing them. I can't see them NOT doing it eventually. Probably after half a decade or so, but when Kai's had it's run, they'll try to milk Dragon Ball again. Unless we get Dragon Ball Brotherhood, I feel they'll do a full redub. Old DB stuff probably still does better than most new anime.

Did Nicktoons use the second opening animation?
Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
I guess not keeping up has its benefits. I don't know if the music used in the speech scene had been played before, but it was my first exposure to the piece, and I thought it was appropriately epic. It got the point of "this is a scary, otherworldly happening" across well enough.
What took me out of the scene, just for a moment, was that terrible shot of Freeza after the transformation. He's cross-eyed.

This isn't really relevant to the dub, but I had forgotten how much Kai itself butchered the Super Saiyan transformation...
EDIT: Scratch that, I forgot how bad Z butchered it. Some of the worst looking animation here and something should've been done with the lighting.
SON Goku :')

Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
At long last, Goku's sir name is said correctly for the first time in a FUNI series dub of Dragon Ball, and what a hell of a debut!
As a middle ground fan, I must admit with every new dubbed episode of Kai I check out, my interest in the Japanese version of Kai lessons.
The English cast is truly putting passion into this dub, and I'm loving it, never thought I could ever truly enjoy a Funi dub of Dragon Ball, but I am. One miss cast, and few OK performances from minor characters is not taking away from the star players, that's for damn sure. Especially compared to the tiredness of the Japanese Kai cast.
As much as I detest the pacing of Z, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and stick to my Dragon Boxes when I want to enjoy the Japanese cast. Looks like it'll be English Kai for repeat viewings in the long run for me.
Good Job Funimation and staff.

Well, I gotta say all in all it was really well done on dub's side for once.
I for one, kinda don't care that much about him saying "Son Goku", they've never used it period AT ALL, even within the Kai dub, just in video games; so it comes off a little weird, at least to me.
Otherwise, Goku actually threatening Gohan? THAT was the seller for me as well, even in the TV dub to see how faithful they are.
Though damn, Ayres does nothing but impress me.
And at least we can say that Schemmel really has.. *puts on sunglasses* Super Saiyan Swagger!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAH!
