The animation during Goku vs. #19

Post by SSJGoku93 » Tue Jan 25, 2011 12:40 am

Am I the only one who feels as if the animation during Super Saiyan Goku's battle against #19 was done pretty poorly in comparison to other big fights of the series? I mean, this was the first big opening fight to the Cell arc., and there was tons of jagged drawing, repeated animations (Goku's fury of punches was repeated like 10 times), and more. What do you guys think, was this animation done poorly, or well enough?

If you search around the forum's archives you can find a thread that explains in depth, the various animation teams that animated the series.

To be fair, every team had their own specific set of standards to go by, which gave each team their own signature style. The one that is featured during the 'Goku Vs. 19' battle is unfortunately unappealing to a large number of viewers.

Why Toei chose to utilize this specific group to animate the battle are due to unknown factors. However, I think it is safe to assume that Toei was either under time constraints to meet deadlines, or the decision-makers decided that it wasn't as significant an event to be animated by a more favored team.

*Rushes to Kanzentai*

Episode #128's animation was supervised by Uchiyama (he also did key animation along side Last House, Kobara Tai'ichirô, and Shida Naotoshi). During this time period his art was really just going to Hell. This episode does look a little better than what we'll begin to see later on in the arc, at least. The Uchiyama episode before this (episode #123) did not involve him as a key animator (but used the rest of the team from #128).

Fun little note, #127 (the episode where Gokû transforms into Super Saiyan against the Artificial Humans) was supervised by my man Yamamuro Naoyoshi, who is the supervisor for all of the new Dragon Ball Kai art and animation.

I always forget about Kanzentai. Shame on me.

I love his transformation in that.

Yep. Any later episode done by Last House and/or Uchiyama look terrible. The animation is stiff (even for anime), the characters are undetailed, the lines are thick, etc. And they have at least one episode in most of the big fights. They handle part of the Cell vs Goku fight, for example, which was recently covered in Kai.

Or hey, for another important episode, they also handled the final part of Goku vs. Baby, which looks horrible as a result. Why that episode wasn't handed to a more expensive team, I can't fathom. That's probably the most tragic casualty.

Yeah, Uchiyama handled episode #178, which has Cell's Kamehame-Ha that could potentially destroy the Earth if Gokû doesn't redirect it.

Oh Lord, don't even get me started on Dragon Ball GT episode #39. That episode, gah, that just killed me. The preceding four episodes were all A-teams...then Uchiyama. UCHIYAMA!! God, it hurts thinking about it. They wasted Kuda Kazuya on #38 (which had no fighting). Yamamuro Naoyoshi did #40. If only they had gotten Nakatsuru or Maeda to do #39!!

Gah!!!

Ya it ruined the Baby fight almost. Up until that point it felt on par in many ways with the epic fights of Dragonball and Z, but then it got ruined, like the majority of GT.
