Image hyperlinking

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Fri May 20, 2011 12:57 pm

I've been wanting to ask this for a while... why isn't it allowed to hyperlink images from the daizex website? I noticed when I do that, they show for a while and later they don't. When I take an image from the site, I always save it and re-upload it from another image hosting site.

So, what's the problem? Worried someone would steal them and claim them their own?

Bandwidth. Not that I don't have enough to support it in all likelihood, but there have been plenty of times in the past where I've gone to sites and forums that just have blanket repostings of entire galleries and such directly linked from our site. It's just... not kosher.

I specifically have certain websites (such as the domain for the forum, obviously) white-listed to enable image linking to work.

(The reason they show up for you in some cases and then disappear is that they're loading from your cache initially, since you've just recently seen them. Later on, it's pulling them from the actual server, which then notices that it's not a white-listed page, and denies the embed.)

Which actually means that even though you're seeing the image, other people likely aren't, since for them it would also be trying to pull them from Mike's server. If you did something like a "hard refresh" (Ctrl+F5 in Firefox--not sure about other browsers) it should tell the browser to load everything properly instead of from cache, and you'd see if the images you're using are actually working. Of course, you should always just avoid direct-linking to other people's stuff anyway; like Mike said, not kosher.
