Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Man, what is up with the mysterious Ocean dubs? It seems like nowadays anything related to Ocean and DBZ is shrouded in mystery and inconsistency. The origins behind the post-Saban Ocean dub (the Westwood dub) are very mysterious, with a ton of different people giving different explanations. Even Scott McNeil said at one point that he had no idea who was in charge of the Westwood dub...all he said was that it was very chaotic, because they went through nine different directors.
And now, here we are, in a similar scenario. Nothing but vague, unclear hints dropped by tons of different people. Quite frankly, at this point, I think the "behind the scenes" info on this dub is just as alluring to fans as the actual dub itself.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
One voice actor who I think will return is Brian Drummond, who would reprise his role of Vegeta. The reason I say this is because he has done this in loads of other animes. In the Gundam series he dubbed a character called Zechs back in 2000-2001, in the TV series and in the movie. Then in 2007, Bandai started bringing out the Dynasty Gundam games, which Drummond has been dubbing Zechs for ever since.
Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I still question why only an Ocean dub could be seen there. Why not just send the already existing dub? Is it a rights issue?SSJ4_Zankuto wrote:Ocean Studios is the only way to see DB Kai in United Kingdom on TV. I wonder which TV channel will pick it up, NickToons, Disney XD and dare I say it CITV or the BBC.
And I'm really confused about this whole situation...who's dubbing what? When did it start? When will it end? When's it being released? In what format is it being released? So many questions.

But, this seems cool. Dunno why they're keeping quiet about it, though =/

Why would they dub the Freeza saga and not the Saiyan saga? That doesn't make any sense at all. Perhaps, they're dubbing it backwards or something?Attitudefan wrote:Wha- WHY!?!funrush wrote:If i'm not wrong I remember some Facebook rumblings a long time ago saying that this Ocean dub would start with the Freeza arc. That screen shot was mentioned much earlier in the thread if memory serves me.... but this Freeza thing must be recording the very first episode. Think about it. Freeza is like the first to appear in the show. I know they don't have much done as of late.
What the hell? Seriously? Man that sucks! Why not do the whole show? It's like last time but missing the saiyan saga! That's retarded to miss out on part of the show!

Maybe... they're recycling the voices from the DBZ ocean dub? =/thedarkuniter wrote:Why would they dub the Freeza saga and not the Saiyan saga? That doesn't make any sense at all. Perhaps, they're dubbing it backwards or something?Attitudefan wrote: Wha- WHY!?!

Ocean could have went about it the same way FUNimation did, Pauline Newstone as place holder for Freeza until they found the proper voice for Freeza similar to FUNimation, and Linda Young. Now unlike FUnimation, since the dub hasn't aired yet, they can go back and insert Tockar's Freeza lines into episode 1.Attitudefan wrote:Well, we'll see who will (if) any reprise their roles.

There have only been a few bits of info that has been released, and I haven't seen any information like that. Most actors aren't given a lot of information about the production they are working on other than knowing the character they are playing, and the lines they record in their recording sessions, they go into their recording session, record their lines, and leave. Tockar said in that facebook message that he doesn't know any other cast member, it seems he only has information about his own work and nothing else. He seems uninformed about the production, just because he just started, doesn't mean the recording just started, there is too little information to come up with the conclusion that they are skipping the Saiyan arc and starting off with the Freeza arc.funrush wrote:If i'm not wrong I remember some Facebook rumblings a long time ago saying that this Ocean dub would start with the Freeza arc. I can't see why they would start with the Freeza arc, that would only be plausible if they were trying to fill in the the hole of Westwood production's missing Freeza saga, but this isn't a Dragon Ball Z dub, it's a whole new production focused on Dragon ball Kai, I highly doubt the first episode of the dub to air will be the beginning of the Freeza arc, I doubt they would be stupid enough to do that. I wouldn't worry about something like that happening.Attitudefan wrote: Wha- WHY!?!

I don't know how they are going about managing this production, but with Tockar being casted as Freeza, and having already recorded some material, given the timing, if I had to guess, I would think that they have already completed the the Saiyan saga and they are now already well into the Freeza arc. It has been 9 months since Kirby dropped the bomb that Ocean had been casting for Kai, some work had to have been done in those 9 months, and we don't even know when Kirby went in for his audition. The production could be well over a year for all we know, who knows when they completed the cast roster for the Saiyan saga.thedarkuniter wrote: Why would they dub the Freeza saga and not the Saiyan saga? My advice, it's all good and fun to speculate, but wait for hard facts before getting your self down over misinformation

Well supposedly Wikipedia has info on a new voice actor playing Goku who will also voice Nappa. I doubt it's true and somebody could be making things up. :/ I can't find any real info at the moment though. I bet it's fake info.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I'm actually very excited for this project. Just think, we'll finally have an Ocean dub that won't be lost to time. I hope they really are being selective about their voice casting since that was a major issue I have with the Funimation version. I never really thought this would ever get off the ground.
Always bet on Ocean!

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I read the info about the Facebook stuff over at the new Funi boards, and they said those Facebook rumors were back in April '10, before Kirby even announced that the Ocean dub would be in production. I doubt they are official or anything, they're probably just rumors.dagame10k wrote:There have only been a few bits of info that has been released, and I haven't seen any information like that. Hmm, maybe. If that's the case this dub will be VERY different than the one 15 years ago.

I'd say Ocean probably left Freeza's laugh undubbed in episode 1 since they didn't need to release the episodes quickly and found themselves a voice actor for Freeza in the Namek saga & had him start by dubbing the laugh in episode 1.
For some reason you seem particularly keen to overcriticise the Ocean Westwood dub. The Buu saga was certainly not "robotic" and overall was their best work.dagame10k wrote:The production values for Ocean kai are the exact opposite of the production values of the Westwood Z dub, the robotic/stiff/odd voice acting plagued the Westwood dub, they are taking their time this time around, so hopefully it will sound more like their previous work Seasons 1/2, Movies 1-3, Gundam Seed, Inu Yasha, and Death Note in terms of voice acting without the awkward line delivery and nothing like the Westwood Z Dub.
It doesn't make much sense for Sean to talk about certain specifics of the dub if he hadn't seen it. Perhaps he was somehow allowed to see a work in progress/beta version of episode 1.dagame10k wrote:Sean Schemmel can't hear something that doesn't exist. If they've just started working on the Freeza saga, or even just finally casted Freeza, I doubt they even produced anything major at the time Sean Schemmel made his comments.
There was no such rumour about that.funrush wrote:If i'm not wrong I remember some Facebook rumblings a long time ago saying that this Ocean dub would start with the Freeza arc. That could explain why he said he's already recorded several episodes.
Don't worry about that for now, you're getting worked up over hearsay. If Ocean want to dub the episodes they missed in DBZ, they should do it for DBZ. It doesn't make much sense to start DB Kai at the Freeza saga.Attitudefan wrote:Wha- WHY!?!

Ocean are too professional and organised to screw a voice actress like that. What Funimation did with Linda Young and Travis Willingham highlights incompetence, disorganisation and disregard.dagame10k wrote:Ocean could have went about it the same way FUNimation did, Pauline Newstone as place holder for Freeza until they found the proper voice for Freeza similar to FUNimation, and Linda Young. Doubt it. Piccolo should already be casted and voiced by now, considering they are currently dubbing the Namek/Freeza episodes.ohaimynameiserik wrote:Piccolo, maybe?

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Maybe Dodoria?
Well if they are going to finish the series, I see that many voices haven't been casted yet or if they have, much later.
That's good to know. But, if Sean Schemmel did hear something, that means they definitely done the first saga, so I guess they'll release it after it's been completely dubbed?RazorX wrote:There was no such rumour about that.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
That was one of the characters I thought of as well, but I don't know if using the same VA for Freeza and Dodoria is a good idea. Ward Perry did a good job in the original DBZ and Funimation have found themselves a competant imitation of Ward Perry for their Kai dub, don't know why Ocean would feel the need to change his VA, unless Perry is not available.Attitudefan wrote:Maybe Dodoria?

Why would they release it after? I think they'll release Kai in the proper episode order.

What I mean is, after fully dubbed, they releases it on TV and maybe on DVD. I don't think they're doing what FUNi is doing by dubbing while it's on air so it will play on TV without any breaks.

I'm a fan of a few of the FUNi voices, but if they did a complete recast with MORE accurate dubbing/fitting voices, then I'd definitely support this release..if any of this stuff is actually happening. I'm still waiting for an official announcement.
