I always thought this as well. He reminded me of the Indian assassin in Master of the Flying Guillotine who also wore a turban and could stretch his arms.

I'm assuming it's because of his stoic, no-nonsense, serious personality, not to mention his deep voice. Think a Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes, or Denzel Washington character. Hell, when I was watching DBZ Episode 6 and Gohan was whining and Piccolo said, "Shut up or I'll give you something to cry about!" my mom overheard it (I'm black, by the way) and said, "Shit, he sounds like a black parent!"
