Can we get some caps of the well animated portions of the Goku vs. Majin Vegeta fight?
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

You are filling in my role...nicely...

No but seriously, thanks for the caps :D

Hmmm...I wonder why Funi didn't encode the episodes this way from the start. This looks much better than the 5 previous Boxes. Not that those were bad; they were great. But they looked noticeably soft. This on the other hand, is very crisp looking. Just check out the outlines and whatnot.

Perhaps FUNi's generational masters were simply softer for the previous DBoxes? Various reasons either on Toei's or FUNi's side could cause this.

If it were FUNi's side themselves, though, perhaps they did a few tweaks to their encoding or something before this point to try to win over the folks who are uncertain about "upgrading" from their Orange Bricks, of which the latter seasons weren't as bad-looking as the earlier ones.

Finally! Some beautiful shots!
jjgp1112 wrote:It's just that usually with the FuniBox sets, they look a bit softer than the JP sets, yet this one looks just as crisp as the Japanese ones. I guess Funi just encoded these ones better.
Yes, that definitely jumped out at me. These look really sharp comparatively. Don't know if it's quite as sharp as the originals, but it's negligible at best now. Before, I could tell which release it was by just looking, but now I probably couldn't, and any "sharpness discrepancy" may be due to the slight brightness shift.

I haven't watch a Dragon Box on my new TV yet, it's an old 20" 4:3 thing but can play NTSC video perfectly. :D
I watched 3 episodes last night and they look so much better than I was used to.

Another great thing about this box set is I haven't seen these episodes in Japanese at all...

Mine should be coming in tomorrow. However, I won't watch it for a while because I'm currently marathoning Dragon Ball and I plan on switching to the season sets once I get to the Android saga.

I dunno if it's mine, but the 6 star ball on the side of the DragonBox looks messed up and uneven (the stars are what I'm referring to)... Is anyone else's like that?

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

Is that a symptom in the original boxes, too, or did FUNi do that?

I just noticed something about the first and last episodes on this set.

210 - No Small Matter!! Little Trunks
Original Airdate: December 15th, 1993

250 - You're Kidding Right!? The Z-Sword is Broken
Original Airdate: December 14th, 1994

A whole year! I thought this was pretty cool and interesting...

Yup, I can definitely see the difference (although in the Goku angel shot, it just looks like the colors are a result are different masters for each individual ED; as far as I can tell they use the same masters for the OP, though). Shame it didn't look this good from the beginning. But hey, those ones were already good enough anyway.

According to TripleRach in the chat, there's a lot less unused space on these discs compared to the previous sets, so they probably just either improve their encoding software or noticed some tweak they never caught before.

What are we looking for in particular?

Just Gohan and Piccolo?

I think its because Piccolo and Gohan are wearing the same outfits? I could be wrong though but that is the only thing I can think of.

Or Gohan doesn't look like that in those episodes?
