What was wrong with DBZ Infinite World on the PS2?

Post by INVINCEABLE » Fri Sep 09, 2011 6:20 pm

I was a big fan of Budokai 3 on the PS2. I didn't buy IW because of the terrible ratings. I've been watching some videos on YouTube and the game looks interesting.

Nothing. The bad reviews were largely because of Budokai 3 fanboys crying over their game being thrashed so soundly by a budget release.

Agreed with Rocketman. Infinate World is a good Budokai 4.

The gameplay flows much better, the game is harder, has new animations and characters, has mini games in Story Mode, has awesome cutscenes in Story Mode and a lot more.

Ignore the reviews, if you like Budokai 3 you'll like Infinite World.

Yeah, the game looks deep and the story mode cutscenes look good. I should have bought this when it was cheap. So expensive on eBay now.

You could do worse than this, so far as prices go.

I may check out Best Buy, Target, Sears, and TRU to see if there are any leftovers.

What was wrong with it was the laziness and brokenness of the new characters. They didn't animate 'blocked ultimates' but every new character's ultimate attack hit 100% of the time.

Yes, I own the game.

Fixed for accuracy. A good chunk of IW reviews pointed out how this game made BL pretty pointless as a negative, and criticized it for its lack of online play. As a game released in a series that never had online play on PS2 is expected to do so in 2008 at the height of the PS2's popularity ... :?

Only legitimate complaint I can think of is the loss of beam struggles. But that's about it.

There you have your answer; the game's too hard, and that's why I didn't like it much?

That's because, as you go through the story mode, you're supposed to get some capsules to upgrade your health and help you survive the later fights. That or master all combos and canceling, and be a total badass at the game.

There's another point when you mentioned the story mode, while it was creative, it was not greatly executed - and it annoyed me quite fast.

Review wise I don't know nor care, on a personal level of playing the game:

Bad:
Removed characters from B3, why remove? Uub and Kaioshin are two of my fav characters.
New characters have insta win Ultimates, there is no way to defend against it if it hits.
Modes were removed such as Tournament and Dragon Arena.
Most minigames that were added have terribe control issues and are boring.
Removed beam struggles, sure it's more advantageous to quick step but beam struggles were already there.
Hyper Mode is a bit OP, it's Shin Budokai's Aura Guard but that is constantly on for a short period.
CPU tends to be much more difficult.
Story mode did it's job but B3 did it waaaaay better.

Good:
The customisation is much better.
Characters that were added were very welcome.
Better balance.
Aura Dash and crash are really cool.
Every character now has an Ultimate.

All in all I prefer B3.

I can't believe people are complaining about Infinite World actually having some semblance of decent artificial intelligence.

Then again, I was actually good at Budokai 3, so I suppose I wasn't hampered by it.

It was a lot harder than Budokai 3 but nothing cruel, I am pretty bad at fighting games and managed to complete all modes with little effort.

The health regen itens are almost cheating, really.

The price thing isn't that much of a problem. I picked up my copy used at a Gamestop about 3 months ago for about $18.

Thankfully, you're not the sole person in the world who gets to decide what each individual person likes and dislikes within certain games!

Let's try to keep that in mind. Lots of people have different tastes when it comes to games. Some prefer skill-based. Some prefer luck-based. Some prefer faster gameplay. Some prefer slower gameplay. Some prefer deep gameplay. Some prefer shallow gameplay. Some prefer presentation over gameplay.

Crazy how the world works, huh?
