Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Yeh basically with 4:3 blurays it will say 16:9. When I watch it I have it on 16:9 that gives the 4:3 image. It's kind of hard to describe, but, long story short; I can't remove the black bars from the image because they essentially are part of the image. If I was to put it on 4:3 I think I would get double bars - I might put in 1.1 later and see what happens.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
If you set it to 4:3 you will get a squished image with double black bars on the side. The episodes are 16:9 but 480 pixels are pure black leaving 1440 x 1080 (4:3) as the actual image.

I saw an unboxing YT vid for Level 1.1 a few weeks back and they were talking about the 16x9 on the package and discussing this topic. About how the black bars are actually part of the image and how adjusting your settings wont change anything. (Not that I would personally want to.) I wasn't actually aware that BRD was made that way. Sucks for any older shows that get HD releases. Hopefully Sony will address that issue in the future. BRDv2??? lol

BRD? BD. Blu-ray Disc = BD, Craddle.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Ignoring the 'BRD' since someone commented on it.Craddle wrote:Sucks for any older shows that get HD releases. Hopefully Sony will address that issue in the future. How does that aspect ratio setup 'suck' for older shows? It works perfectly well since BD is generally meant to be used on modern televisions, which are effectively all 16:9, thereby taking out (most of) the possibility of someone screwing up the aspect ratio.
Also... we are technically on Blu-ray 5.0 at this point in time.

That's just it, the problem I see is playing a Blu on a 4:3 TV. Not that you should be doing that, but its one niche the release derps itself in by virtue of the format.MarcFBR wrote: How does that aspect ratio setup 'suck' for older shows? Oh lord, I must comment on this one. Most 4x3 HDTV's were faced out a while ago. From 2004 onward the majority has been 16x9 screens. I still don't see how the format "derps" itself in that way. Many classic movies, a giant majority from Criterion, have been 4x3 releases and have been praised by many, despite them not being widescreen.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:That's just it, the problem I see is playing a Blu on a 4:3 TV. 4:3 isn't the issue here.Krycek7o2 wrote:Oh lord, I must comment on this one. Most 4x3 HDTV's were faced out a while ago. From 2004 onward the majority has been 16x9 screens. It's the problem a 16x9 image with hardcoded bars looking even smaller on an actual 4:3 TVs, HD or not, because you have said bars taking precious space on a smaller, non-widescreen screen.
I think the idea that anyone would watch a blu-ray on a 4:3 TV is so lost on you guys (Rightly so, because it's not the ratio blus are designed) that you missed the part where the problem of a tiny image was brought up just a few posts up. The post I was commenting on.

Very rare situation, doesn't change it looks odd.

Why would you have a Blu-ray player hooked up to a standard definition television?

Pffft, I don't know! I've heard internet stories of tech-knownothings doing it?Kendamu wrote:Why would you have a Blu-ray player hooked up to a standard definition television?

Never said it was a common issue. Just saying that it would actually happen and it's not me bashing 4:3. It's not like I'm not buying the Dragon Boxes or anything.

Well, the colors look really nice, so it'd be neat if you could watch the BD's on a standard television without the border.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Only way I can think of doing that would be to encode them without the borders, but then you have to encode them. With a high enough bitrate the quality loss would be unnoticeable if you used x264.

Not at all.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:I think the idea that anyone would watch a blu-ray on a 4:3 TV is so lost on you guys (Rightly so, because it's not the ratio blus are designed) that you missed the part where the problem of a tiny image was brought up just a few posts up. What I'm (we're) saying is...
That isn't part of the market BDs are made for. If someone buys a BD and watches on an old 4x3 TV, that's fine, but it isn't made or marketed for them, so they have no expectation beyond 'it will work', which it will. It just won't work well.

This would actually be my support argument for the level sets not having the Japanese title cards, these sets aren't aimed for Japenese exclusive fans but more the fans of of both. But than Funimation went and put Japanese title cards on the Orange bricks but not 1.1MarcFBR wrote:Not at all.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:I think the idea that anyone would watch a blu-ray on a 4:3 TV is so lost on you guys (Rightly so, because it's not the ratio blus are designed) that you missed the part where the problem of a tiny image was brought up just a few posts up. Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
What about someone who uses his PS3 as his Blu-Ray player, and doesn't currently have an HDTV (but will in the future), so they go ahead and buy the Blu-Ray. I don't think it's that far-fetched.Kendamu wrote:Why would you have a Blu-ray player hooked up to a standard definition television?

Yeah, I had a PS3 before I had an HDTV, because someone decided to be awesome and get it as a wedding gift.
I was purposefully holding off on buying an HDTV until we moved, but still. It's possible!

I remember using my PS3 Slim 250GB on a tiny CRT TV to play GTA IV back in 2010, and it didn't look much better than a SD game.
Watching Blu-rays on an CRT TV, is also no different than a DVD with some mere improvements.
BDP + CRT TV = LOL! xD

I got my PS3 when I had a CRT TV back in 2008 and I remember I played Dead Space on it. What a nightmare that was with the small text that was impossible to read and even on an HDTV it is still hard to read. The first Blu-ray movie I saw was The Shining on that CRT TV.
