Now I'm actually interested to see these things.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
It really doesn't. The image looks flat and uninteresting.Corpsecreate wrote:Of course, you WILL lose detail because as mentioned, the grain is part of the image. You can, however, keep most details intact. In my opinion, the minor loss of detail is worth the trade-off.

Thanks, I appreciate the answer.Ashura wrote:Funny enough, I think if it's a video file on a memory stick you can zoom the crap out of it, but not for a BR. Unfortunately, most BR players -- include the PS3 -- do not have an option to crop the sides off. It really, really should just because it would be such an easy thing to add, but it doesn't. Really there's no reason not to add the feature. Sorry to say you're out of luck.OutlawTorn wrote:As most DVD players have the ability to zoom into the picture and my parents' 16:9 TV has various settings to zoom into the picture as well, it's not changing the aspect ratio just utilizing all of the screen. As I don't have a remote for the PS3's Blu-ray player (don't intend to get one, either. I didn't like the PS2's DVD remote and the PS3 version is way too similar) I wanted to know if there was an option from a menu accessible from the PS3 controller so I could zoom in to negate the letterbox and pillarboxing. I don't need a commentary on how it's not made for my TV or why I have it even hooked up to an older TV, all I need is a simple "Yes, it can. Here's how..." or "Sorry, can't help you there."
Thanks.
It's not something I can't live with until I get a proper setup for Blu-rays, especially as I do have the Dragon Boxes so I can easily watch the show with the 4:3 picture completely filling the screen.
I would say I could watch the Blu-rays on my computer and such, but I haven't upgraded my computer in so long that it doesn't have a Blu-ray drive and the monitor is still going strong after 11+ years thus, yep... 4:3. With my computer, though, it's more of a space issue as I am really limited as to what will actually fit. I could upgrade to a new monitor but it would actually be smaller than what I currently use because any new monitor cannot be wider than what I've already got.
Yeah, I find that it is really easy to not pay attention to grain in a picture, just like it's easy to get used to letterboxing when watching 16:9 content on a 4:3 TV (or a 2.35:1 movie on a standard 16x9 TV) but it's the other, more glaring, imperfections which are distracting no matter what. The best example I can give are the "spots" which commonly appear on film lead in countdowns.Levlik wrote:I don't know about nobody liking grain. I like grain. I'm a fan of the way older movies were shot and filmed more than I am of the digital video we have in theaters today, and Dragon Ball reflects that opinion. I dunno, I just find grain very aesthetically pleasing when watching a film from 20+ years ago, moreso on animation than anything. Another case of a grainy Blu-ray is the recent transfer of The Last Unicorn, a Topcraft-animated movie from 1982, which is incredibly grainy and I think it looks fantastic, though I'm sure others wouldn't.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Exactly! Grain is integral to the image quality, check out the TAF if you want a detailed analysis.dbboxkaifan wrote:Ashura wrote:Again, you just answered why grain is kept. Grain is part of the image, nobody likes grain, but we know that if you remove to much you'll remove detail and run the risk of making the image seem smeared. You just can't completely remove it without losing said perks of keeping a bit of it.

I mean I watched 1.1 in it's raw form, with no noise filtration or any of that on, awe-struck at the quality. It really isn't as big a deal as people purport it to be.

Wow, that sure was quick. 1.2 came as soon as I realized it was shipping, haha. The card is Schemmel with Goku, by the way. Not much to say about the extras. Just a slideshow of the FUNi actors and their signatures...and a slideshow of a picture of Chris Sabat and various photoshop edits of it.

Yeah, I don't think I said that? Because I personally like me some grain?
If I want to call them super special awesome magic movie disks, I will.
By the way, one of the reasons the player itself should be able to crop and zoom video is so that -- if you really wanted to (and please don't start an OAR debate about this) -- you could watch stuff 16x9 cropped with subtitles. That, and for old DVDs that are widescreen and non-anamorphic. The Slayers Motion Picture not-so-super special awesome magic movie disk (aka DVD) comes to mind... you either have to watch it with black bars at the top and bottom, or zoom it and just watch the dub.
Hi. Please don't get pedantic about this again. It's not worth it, especially when there are 100s of viable things you could correct people about on this forum about. (Hint, I shouldn't have used about twice here.)dbboxkaifan wrote:They're called BD Players, or BDP.Ashura wrote:Funny enough, I think if it's a video file on a memory stick you can zoom the crap out of it, but not for a BR. BD = Blu-ray Disc (or just Blu-ray)

Not trying to get on you or anything, but read the thread at least a little... the guy asked a simple question and everyone just got done brow-beating him with the same answer you also gave him about how it's 'all on the TV!' He was asking -- very specifically -- if you could do it on the PS3. He has an old TV because he can't afford an HDTV currently, but is buying Blus to future-proof his collection.dbboxkaifan wrote:If you've got an HDTV/etc then you can zoom in.

My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

I'm beginning to wonder if the whole grain debate is going to end up being like the honorifics debate? Some people want grain, other don't. Some want honorifics in their subs, others don't. Are we heading down that path?

Maybe. Only, the grain debate is prominent throughout the world of high definition. People, usually younger ones, aren't used to grain. They see it, they think it's an image defect. It's unfortunate too, since a lot of good films have received absolutely worthless Blu-ray releases that were scrubbed so clean that the actors look like wax sculptures.Choujin Daizenshuu wrote:I'm beginning to wonder if the whole grain debate is going to end up being like the honorifics debate? Honestly, I would compare it more to the "Pan and Scan" and "Tilt and Scan" fiasco, which even DragonBall hasn't been unscathed by as we all know. Hopefully in time, grain elimination will be looked down upon just like those practices.

There's no texture, look at the clouds, grass, and the sand especially. So smudgey.

What's "Denoised"?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Denoised means the grain has been removed.
