Ani-Nation posted the announcement a few pages back, Kai Part 7 is coming out in March, too.

I think that Funimation will probably just push Level 2.2 to next month. Funimation always makes delays and I doubt they will release two levels on one day.

Here's a bunch of comparisons I made: the Dragonboxes were upscaled to 1440x1080 in Photoshop, and pillarboxes were added for easier comparing the Blu-ray. The US Dragonbox shots were shifted up 11 pixels to match the frame positioning of the JPN release. All shots lossless PNG.

Personally I think this Blu-ray release rocks hard. The colors look natural instead of the teal push of the Dragonboxes (teal push also plagues many recent transfers of old films for their Blu-ray release). I'm sure the animators painted the sky actually blue instead of teal back in the day. The blacks are rich and deep instead of gray. The increase in clarity and detail is wonderful. You also get a decent amount more of the frame without the composition being negatively affected. This release really needed a 30+ Mbit video encode though as the artifacting is quite noticeable.
Grain is beautiful.

Hmm, it looks like you actually do gain a small bit of detail. Look at the dinosaur's mouth and the farmer's mouth. The individual lines are very difficult to make out on the Dragon Boxes. Also look at the well near Chichi's right foot. You can make out a few more scuff marks. Even with a minimal gain of detail, though, the Blu-Rays do look much sharper. Thanks for the caps.

Hmm, did FUNi up the brightness very slightly on their Dragon Box? I have the r2 Singles, but I honestly never noticed.

It's a mistake on their part. NTSC/J and NTSC/UC have about 10% brightness difference, and since Funi didn't correct it when they encoded it, it looks a little brighter. It's almost completely unnoticeable, in my opinion, unless you do a side-by-side. I believe I heard if you watch the Dragon Boxes on a 4:3 CRT that the brightness will appear the same.

It's not a 'mistake'. The deliberately brightened it by 10% to make up for the NTSC/J vs NTSC/U brightness difference, a difference which only shows up on CRT TVs and NOT on computer displays.

So on monitors it looks correct?

I have noticed color differences on a monitor as opposed to a television screen.
So mondo lame.

I still prefer the Dragon Box colors by far. However, I'll pick these up eventually when they're released in sets or something (By that time I should have a BR player).

EricM, thanks for those comparisons, but ugh, Raditz looks too yellow on the DBZ FUNi Blu-rays, Dragon Box has a natural-feeling colour than what FUNimation DBZ Blus to me.

By the way, has FUNimation said if DBZ Level 1.1 was a success in terms of profit?

Perfect @ BDP (Blu-ray Disc Player) not BR.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Uh yeah, thanks for correcting such an important detail that clearly matters. I think I'll continue to just say BRP.

Thanks for screenshots - It always strikes me how much better Piccolo looks on 1.1 compared to on the Dragon Boxes. Looks more like a Namek - In the originals he always had that sort of green complexion , the same green as King Piccolo and Kami - for some reason though he become a lighter green in the dragon boxes. The skin coloring also looks perfect on the levels, clearly too pinkish on the others.

The Dragon Box colors are faded. Sure they may look more natural, but color correction is needed for Blu-ray. So that the colors could look vivid. Otherwise, it will look even more faded in 1080p. I'm not saying the Blu-ray looks better. But you can't expect an 8-year old transfer to look the same in HD. But a lot of you already know this by now, so yeah.

Piccolo on the Levels looks a bit too dark-ish, perfect colours? It's subjective.

No. What I meant was, FUNi increased the brightness by 10% so that the US Dragon Boxes look the same on a US TV as the Japanese Dragon Boxes do on a Japanese TV.

Darkness can easily be altered by changing the brightness if people feel that way. And yes the coloring is subjective although I'd bet most neutrals would say 1.1 has better coloring (at least in terms of accuracy).
