Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
What I don't get is why didn't FUNimation use the logo from other openings that don't have the stamp for Level 1.1? And why not add the stamp on the double features? It doesn't make sense?

Yeah, It's really confusing. They used Movie 1's opening for 2 of the series releases, then used the series opening for the double features.CyberpunkCentral wrote:What I don't get is why didn't FUNimation use the logo from other openings that don't have the stamp for Level 1.1? Wouldn't it have been so much easier to just use the correct opening? It's not like they didn't have it or something. At least we know for a fact that they had the correct opening the whole time. It's on the DVD singles. Sometimes the decisions they make are mind numbing. Then again, as already stated, how many people besides fans like us, even noticed or knew what the stamp was?
My guess, FUNimation themselves didn't even know the difference and possibly still don't.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
While leaving the stamp on there was a mistake, there's no problem with them using a better source for most of the intro footage. They did remaster the intro... just with the best source possible. If I was remastering the intro, I sure as heck would've done the same thing... I just would've checked on the stamp.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

It isn't. The problem comes when FUNi tries to use that to try to seem better than the DBoxes. It also kinda brings up confusion...apparently. But it does look better than the Dragon Box. Is it the original footage remastered? No, but like I've already said, the objectives of the Boxes and the Levels are different. The fact becomes irrelevant. Besides, it's not like this is the only example they use.AgitoZ wrote:It isn't. The problem comes when FUNi tries to use that to try to seem better than the DBoxes. Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
IF the footage presented is identical to the opening of the episodes it is attached to, with the exception of the stamp and lack of Japanese credits, then it's really just a minor issue isn't it? If the remastering result is superior to the Dragon Boxes (which depends on preference, really) then that's great.
The only gripe I have with the finished product is they still have the generic opening music on the dub track with the Japanese soundtrack, but they leave in Zenkai Power, which is really the only song I do not want to have to listen to. (thank heavens for the marathon mode)
Finally, seeing as it has been a near constant recently, is it really that big a deal whether someone says "Blu-Ray" or "BR" instead of "Blu-ray" or "BD"? People can say cd/dvd or CD/DVD all they like and neither is wrong so blu-ray/Blu-ray/Blu-Ray/BLU-RAY... it all says the same thing. Nobody needs to be that anal.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
What are you talking about? The only releases from FUNi to feature movie 1's opening prior to "Level 1.1" are the Ginyu singles and movie 1 itself. Everything else with CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA as the opening theme had the textless version of either the second or third animation. Heck, episodes 1-21 on the UUE singles and orange bricks alike incorrectly used the second animation, and, on the UUE single of movie 1, the second animation is used on the English dub side, despite the Japanese side using the proper one.Craddle wrote:They used Movie 1's opening for most of the series releases...
Here's my theory...
The only source of OP-1 that FUNi has (outside the DBox masters) is the opening of movie 1, credits and all. What they did was have their remastering team go through the footage, frame by frame, and manually paint over the credits to create a textless version.
On the steelbook/Blu-ray version of movie 1, the areas of the OP-1-specific scenes where the credits would normally appear flash a bit, making it apparent that they've been tampered with. In this case, they took the textless OP-2 and spliced in the OP-1-specific scenes (except for the oncoming capsule scene, which should be panning out in OP-1) after removing their text, which explains why the Eirin stamp doesn't appear in it, and why no other part of it has flashing areas.
For "Level 1.1" however, they most likely just went through the whole OP-1 (possibly for consistency in quality) and removed all of its text (albeit overlooking the Eirin stamp). Also, this time around, it's possible that FUNi may have done a better job of concealing them and making it appear as if they were never there, but I've only ever seen the footage on YouTube, so I can't make a definitive call on that.

Blu-Ray.com has done a review of 1.2, with plenty of screenshots, of course: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dragon-Ba ... 76/#Review
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Review has an error. There is no Level 1.3. It should be 2.1Pokewhiz7 wrote:Blu-Ray.com has done a review of 1.2, with plenty of screenshots, of course: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dragon-Ba ... 76/#Review
Edit: Found more errors.
The entire series has been remastered in HD from the original 16mm film.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
If its an error then it's FUNimation who should be blamed. Since they're the ones who said their using the original 16mm film masters for the Blu-ray. I think FUNimation is stretching the truth a bit. But I do think they have copies of the original film masters that Toei made for them. Which are probably the same masters used for the Orange Bricks as well.Craddle wrote:Review has an error. There is no Level 1.3. Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I think they're being misleading, and what they really mean is, "film masters that happen to be from Japan and are not bootlegs". At least, that's what I got out of it.

They are using the original 16mm film masters. The original 16mm film masters that were given to them by Toei. lolCyberpunkCentral wrote:If its an error then it's FUNimation who should be blamed. Regardless, we all know they're using the same masters they used for the orange bricks.

It's out already?! Looks like Funimation is trying to get these out the door as soon as possible (or perhaps they just wanted to complete the first level before Christmas.). I'll probably end up buying the first set, then wait for the inevitable 'complete level' boxes.

Yeah, Blu-Ray.com gave them half a 'B'. C'mon Funimation, there's so much bonus material you could throw on to these releases! Old promos! A documentary about Dragon Ball in North America! Audio commentary! The last DB releases that had decent extras were the 'Ultimate Uncut' stuff.Soul wrote:Okay... 1.2's extras...suck really bad. Its just 2 sideshow collections... -_-
