Bad encode, low quality, or what? Can you be more specific?

It's a low quality encode. Badly interlaced and some weird artifacts on some scenes.

Are both specials effected the same? One more than another?

I guess we can't expect much from a free bonus DVD in a $5 Magazine though.

The audio tracks being only Stereo Dolby Digital 2.0 is very disappointing, I was hoping they'd be 5.1, but I guess paying $5 for it (not counting shipping for those that ordered) is about right.

As I've got PtEtSS in HD (Xbox 360's RB2) I'll just wait for a Blu-ray of DBZ EoB. Well, I might buy the BD of PtEtSS if it comes out, has a more interesting story and animation than EoB.

Welcome to the forum!

"Saikyo Jump" is a compilation magazine put out by Shueisha in Japan that contains spin-off manga of various other popular Jump/Shueisha franchises. There are things like "Chopperman" (a spin-off from "One Piece"), and "DragonBall SD" by Naho Ooishi (which is its own semi-serious/semi-parody of the series; it originally had four chapters in "Saikyo Jump" last year when it was a quarterly magazine, and then started up fresh from the beginning of the DB series this year when "Saikyo Jump" went monthly this past January).

The 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour Special received a DVD release, but it was a special mail-in order for a limited time only in Japan. It is still widely available on (mostly Japanese) auction sites, however. There were two manga adaptations of said special -- a two-part, black-and-white manga version by Naho Ooishi published in "V-Jump" back in 2009, and what we call an "animanga" version in 2010, which basically just took screen shots from the animated special and put word balloons on them.

As for the original Bardock and Trunks TV specials, were you looking for manga or DVD versions of them? If manga, they too had "animanga" (or "Film Anime Comics") versions printed long ago in Japan. If you are looking for DVD versions, they can still be found on DVD in North America from FUNimation (the old 4:3 versions from 2000 which are out-of-print, or the "Double Feature" versions and single-disc releases thereof from a few years back). The "Special Selection DVD" from last August in Japan is, like you said, getting tougher to track down. Amazon Japan has it, but says it will take 2-5 weeks to ship.

In addition to what Mike stated, the Special Selection DVD is also available on ebay for a high price tag of $40-50. There is currently 2 copies available.

$42 is a little high considering what it is and its quality, didn't YesAsia had it for $15-20?

Edit: Oh, it was CDJapan and it's already out of stock.

Man!! Still waiting on mine. Cdjapan told me that I might wait between 1-14 weeks for mine. I went the cheap route and ordered basic SAL shipping. They also said that I might have to pay customs fee? Did you guys actually get charged custom fees?

That's what I said.

And it's not really available anymore anywhere. OOP. So if they really want to buy the DVD, they don't have much of a choice.

So, who else had troubles prying the DVD out of the book? I just took out the entire page for the DVD cover. First time owning a book like this. Quite interesting, and rather amusing reading the SD chapter.

So how popular and succesful has Episode of Bardock been? Is it a sensation? Does this pave the way for more "serious" extra movies to be released? Ones that go back to DBZ movies' root of action-packed 40 minute battle sequences? With this, and the remake of Plan to Destroy the Saiyans, will we start seeing, maybe, like a new "serious action packed" production a year?

If Toei's going to make more DBZ Specials they should base it on new plots not something that was done years ago and will be downgraded.

My ratings:
DBZ OVA 2008 (YSGaHFR) 2.5/5
DBZ OVA 2010 (PtEtSS) 3.5/5
DBZ OVA 2011 (EoB) 3.0/5
DBZK OP Animation 3.0/5
DBZK ED Animation 3.5/5
1 = Poor
2 = Fair
3 = Good
4 = Very Good
5 = Excellent

Ok, but instead of your personal rating, I'm asking about the actual facts and figures as to this thing's sales and viewership.

Apparently Ooishi Naho disagrees with Toei's stance on Super Saiyans with tails:

Wow, I realy like the above picture! And the tail makes the things more confusing... in GT, EoB & video games, the tail remains brown in SSJ, but in Perfect Files cover, some merchadise, some anime errors, and in the above pic, it's golden... The pic is based to the manga I suppose, since it's done by Ooishi, so I suppose that the tail it's brown in the anime, but golden in the manga? :?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Just a heads-up for those still interested in the original manga version of the special -- the April 2012 issue of V-Jump is reprinting the whole thing all in one go.

Play-Asia has it up for pre-order. Issue releases February 21st.
