Question about voices in DBZ games and others

Post by Super Sonic » Wed Dec 28, 2005 11:21 pm

I have a question regarding voices of different languages in the DBZ games and other video games. You know how a lot of guys prefer to hear the Japanese voices in the recent DBZ games in North America and Canada. Is there something of an opposite feeling in Japan when it comes to games released there that have American cartoon characters? For example, did anyone in Japan import the US version of Kingdom Hearts to hear the original voices for the Disney characters?

That may often be the case, but I do know that many people (at least some people that I've talked to) want the Japanese voices instead of the English voices not necessarily just for the sake of hearing the Japanese voices, but because they just plain don't like the English voices (which is one problem I do not believe they have in Japan, though I could be mistaken).

I know that Pocket Monsters has a special show called Pocket Monsters Reload or something in which they air the American dub.
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

That's an interesting question that never really crossed my mind because I don't know what games they get over there anyway.

A little off-topic, I don't have any problem with the North American voices for DBZ. I am playing Budokai Tenkaichi with the Japanese voices though, but only to hear something different for once. I don't actually prefer one over the other.

I don't know if it really matters, because the in-game voice overs aren't actually dubbed in BT.

I usually leave the dub voices on, but since I've gotten a lot of the uncut DVDs lately, I'll switch it to Japanese to laugh at how much of a girl Goku sounds like, even at SSJ4!

That's because it IS a girl doing the voice. But I think you knew that, right? Right?! :)

Kingdom Hearts was originally in Japanese. When it was re-released (Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix) with bonuses one of the pluses was the English track with Japanese subtitles. I know their Pocket Monsters movie DVD's have the dub on them as well. So they are pretty interested I would guess...

I've yet to see any interest on the Dragonball side other than the multi-language scenes on the DragonBoxes.

Jord - If you could send me a link with more info about Pocket Monsters Reload that'd be awesome... send me a PM if you'd like. :)

Yeah, I know. :) I just found it amusing that the strongest man in the universe had a high-pitched womanly voice!

I could concour with that also. The one thing I don't think it works with is when it is something of theirs being ported to another country. It's like this: Would you take the time, energy, and spend the money to track down Spanish dubs of The Simpson's if you predominately have access to the original. The answer is probably not, however, in Mexico (for example,) they might have people interested in what the original cast sounds like and thus would be more likely to import something from America to hear them. The same thing goes for Kingdom Hearts, in that we here want our voices predominately, but Japanese folks were interested in what our original (or not so much anymore,) cast sounded like. Just like we are interested in what the original DBZ cast was like; it's sort of a universal interest in originality. I hope that made sense and I also hope that I didn't offend anyone with all my assumptions.

Although only the first three Pocket Monsters movies ("Mewtwo Strikes Back", "Revelation Lugia" and "Lord of the Unknown Tower") had the dub track.

Movie 4 ("Celebi: A timeless encounter") and onwards do not have the dub track (Possibly because of 4Kids switch from Warner Bros. to Miramax?).

Although one thing which perplexes me, is why do the Japanese DVDs have the dub and the dub DVDs not have the Japanese? Stupid 4Kids... :x (Oh well, at least there's the possibility that season 9 onwards will be out of their hands. :D)

... I'm getting a little off topic aren't I? ^^;;

Although yeah, I agree that the want to know the original work no matter what the material is something that many people are interested in.

I actually like his Japanese voice. It's funny, but in a good way in my opinion. I don't think it's sounds womanly though. More child-like than womanly to me. It just seems to fit his character since he's still pretty innocent and naive as an adult. :P

I like his Japanese voice too, I just laugh at it sometimes, kinda like the One Piece dub!

Though, I hate the fact that Goku, Gohan, and Goten have the same voice, that annoys the shit out of me. How does Chi-Chi know who's talking?!

They're *not* the same "voice", though. Gohan speaks properly and more "cutely" (when he's a kid; when he's an adult, he still speaks properly, but doesn't sound as "cute"). Goku's got the weird accent. And then there's just Goten; by this point, he's the only one that "sounds young". If you know what you're listening for, you can hear it.

Yeah you can tell between them. You can also tell between Stephanie Nadolny's Goku and Gohan.

While there are times Ms. Nozawa's voice is a bit high pitched for my tastes, it's a whole lot better than dub Luffy's which is in my view, the second worst rendition of a male character voiced by a female actress.

I love Goku's weird accent though. XD Goten's voice sounds like an average little kid. Doesn't Trunks's male japanese va voice him both in child and adult forms?

Yeah, Trunks' seiyuu does Mirai, GT, and Chibi Trunks. Or so it says in Budokai Tenkaichi's Character Illustrations...

 Please correct me if I'm wrong about this, guys!

No, you're right. Trunks' seiyuu does every incarnation. From Mirai to GT.
