DBZ BGM documentation - a work in progress

[EDIT:] I'm taking care of both the BGM-by-episode in a new charted format, and also the BGM-by-movie. Please feel free to follow my progress.

Now that the Complete BGM Collection has been released, I figure I'd better go over this again so that the pieces that were previously in red are now labeled as available on CD. My codes for the BGM Collection appear as such: for example, Bgm1:12(a) for Disc 1, track 12, and the first piece on the suite. Please be patient as it's the middle of the week and I can't get too much done right now.[/EDIT]

This is the only way we're going to be able to tell if the upcoming DBZ Complete BGM Collection contains all of the music composed for Z. I'm charting out all of the BGM that appears in the episodes (one at a time, and not necessarily in order), and making a list (and checking it twice!) of what's already on CD, and what isn't. Also, some music that was composed for the original DragonBall often creeps into Z, and we can't expect any of that to be on this new set (as a matter of fact, I'm *hoping* none of it is, as it would only complicate matters further and we'd have an even smaller chance of our favorite Z piece being on this collection. Let's just pray they'll release separate Complete BGM Collections for DB and GT).
For the pieces that have already seen a release, I document a number representing which CD and track it can be found on. For tracks on the 5-disc set set, I put the CD number first, then the track, then which part of the track it can be found on. For example, if it says 4:16(b), that means the piece is found on Disc 4 of the 5-disc set, track 16, and it's the second piece of the suite/compilation. In cases where "On1" precedes the number, this means the piece is found only on Ongakushu vol. 1; and "On2" indicates Ongakushu vol. 2. Then we also have the Movies 10 and 11 soundtracks, represented by M10 and M11, respectively (but those won't appear until I start in on the Boo saga). If the piece can't be found on any set, I write out the description of the scene in which the piece first appears or is most memorable (for example, there's an upbeat, cartoony composition that first appears in Episode 13, when Goku is playing tag with the the bespectacled ogre, but it also is heard during Goku and Piccolo's driving competition, which is more memorable, so I refer to it as "Bumper Cars!") and the text is red. If I'm unable to identify a piece, that generally means it hasn't been released, and sometimes it also means it's from the original DB (I'm better at picking out Z music).

Well, this is it, folks -- the DragonBall Z Complete BGM Collection comes out tomorrow, and even though I chose the fastest shipping method from CDJapan, I probably won't be getting my copy until Saturday - at the earliest. This is the moment of truth! WILL it live up to the name of "Complete", and contain the BGM pieces we want?!

Oh, and by the way, here's some more episode BGM documentation :) You'll notice I skipped ahead quite a few episodes. The reason for this is, I began doing this documentation, starting with the Imperfect Cell Saga (as it was that point I was at in re-watching the episodes), before the Complete BGM Collection was announced. After that I felt there was no need to document it anymore, and kept watching through the Perfect Cell Saga, and the first disc of the Cell Games Saga, without taking note of the BGM. Then, the track listing for the Collection was announced, and I became paranoid, and went back to listing the BGM from there, rather than where I left off. Ah, thank you so so much!
Hmm, looking at the track lengths, and off the top of my head (without having the 5-disc set tracklisting in front of me), I'd say the tracks from the original 5-disc set are the exact same thing. GRRRR!! On the bright side, however, the new tracks are much longer than I was expecting - Gohan's Theme at 3:22; Alas, The Days Of Training at 4:34; and even the Bridge Collection clocks in at 2:38. THAT'S certainly promising at least!

I'm guessing you're only through Disc 1, so I'll wait in earnest for the Disc 2 and 3 listings. Again, I'm VERY grateful.

Which is exactly my worst nightmare come true.

WHY the hell did they get our hopes up like this (I believe COMPLETE BGM Collection would be FALSE ADVERTISING!!), and then dash it to pieces?! I wish there was some way we could persuade them to ACTUALLY put out a FULL set, but since we're foreigners to Japan, why would they listen to the silly Americans?!

I hope to high heaven there's a *huge* Japanese fan outcry so that Toei realizes they've been a bunch of #$%'s as far as the BGM has gone, and THEN *maybe* we'll get a rise out of them.

WELL IT'S ABOUT FRIGGIN' TIME!

My 3-CD BGM Collection finally came today. And it's Sunday! How is this possible, you ask? Well, this morning I was awakened by a phone call from a guy at the post office saying he had an ExpressMail package for me and he'd be there for another couple of hours if I wanted to come down and get it. Naturally, I was there ASAP!
Now that I've had a chance to listen to the tracks with unreleased music (haven't given the old tracks a listen yet), I can actually say that it went off pretty well. It's not quite worth the money if you already own the 5-disc set, but for anyone who doesn't, 4500 yen (about US $38) is a *bargain*. As an owner of the 5-disc set, I can say I don't regret shelling out the money, but I still think the set would have been much better off if they had included another 2 discs (or whatever) and made it a complete collection. Come to think of it, after all my ranting that it was falsely advertised as "complete", now that I own the product, I can't find "complete" (or "zen" or "subete"), in reference to the BGM amount, anywhere on the product. Perhaps "complete" was just a label the online stores automatically attached to it.
I'm enthused to finally have (oh glory be!) "Coola's Multiplicity" from Movie 6 on CD, devoid of sound effects and yapping! Here's a quick look at the tracks with new BGM, previously unreleased (please note that I still count any BGM that appears on the Ongakushu volumes or the individual movie soundtracks - just not the 5-disc set - as "old". There's a good amount of BGM from *those* CDs on this set as well, but we won't cover those just yet). Green indicates that it's been on CD before.

I'm still a little disappointed that the movie 7 track STILL doesn't contain that bad ass theme when Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks are all SSJ.

It was also played sometime in the Cell Game, most likely when Cell prepares his final kamehameha after Gohan saves Vegeta.

Maybe I'm not skimming through it enough..

I've been able to listen to the Movie 12 and 13 tracks more leisurely now, and I must say, I'm as excited as ever to see these films, if just for the music alone. I've gotten pretty partial to the opening piece on the Movie 13 track - y'gotta love those jarring piano strikes!

It certainly isn't JUST a re-hash, but I *do* have a beef with it because it could have been a lot better, if only they had included another disc or so to fill it up with the rest of the music (even though "Coola's Multiplicity" is my favorite piece and it's on this set, I have a lot of other favorites, and they're missing!), and then it could REALLY be a complete soundtrack.

However, if you'll look at my second post on this thread (my transcription of the BGM from the first 11 movies), you'll notice that the Movie 10 soundtrack contains nearly all of the film's music, so you'd do better to look for that instead (or *also*). At the risk of sounding like a cliche, there's always eBay, and if it isn't on there at the moment, patience is a virtue.

Oh, there's plenty of pieces on the Ongakushu volumes that aren't on this new set (which was fashioned after the 5-disc set). Ongakushu vol. 1 has the ever-popular "Sign Of Hope" theme (the one that goes "dun-dun-dun"), and Ongakushu vol. 2 covers a whole mess of pieces from Movie 8 (though still incomplete) that this BGM Collection only scratches the surface of.

EDIT: In case you guys were wondering how I'm able to recognize most of the BGM pieces, here's a cut-and-paste from a reply I just made to a Private Message.

I'm afraid if there is a site that lists all of the BGM, then I certainly don't know about it. That's why I've started this project: so that a reference will finally be available.
Basically the reason I'm so knowledgeable about the BGM is the fact that I used to listen to the 5-disc set *religiously*, and when you do that, it really grows on you. Every weekend for the past few weeks I've been plowing through my DVDs and taking notes (which eventually become my weekly addition to my documentation thread), and it's sheer luck that most of them have been pieces that I recognize. It's really easy, actually, to pinpoint the music that's already on CD; and as for the unreleased pieces, well, I had already recorded sound clips (onto a simple tape cassette) of each unreleased piece of BGM straight from the movies, and when I got sick of the 5-disc set, I'd listen to these tapes.
There *are*, however, as you may have noticed, plenty of BGM pieces that I can't identify. This is usually because it isn't on the 5-disc set, or any CD for that matter. There's also a few DragonBall pieces that, though they appear on the 5-disc set, I'm still a little fuzzy on. I plan on going through my documentation and recording the unidentified pieces once I'm finished with my first run-through of Z, and see if I can finally give them a name. Now that I own the BGM Collection, I'm also going to have to go back through what I've already documented and fix some of the pieces I originally claimed as "unreleased" (meaning they're coded in red).
Back when I first bought the 5-disc set, I launched a website (I never got around to exposing it to the DBZ community because I wanted to finish it first, which never happened), and here I created a few pages that chart the BGM from the 5-disc set, with their "M"-numbers, piece and track length, the works. I'm going to have to go back and revamp it so that it corresponds with my documentation, and then I'll give you guys the link!
