Alright, I'm seriously getting fucking weirded out about all these questions about Puar I've got. And of course, since this is Daizex, I know you'll all figure them out for me!
Is it Puar or Pu-erh? I've seen it spelled both ways, especially in the old subtitles. I've always used Puar.
Is Puar male or female?
I've always wondered this, and I've just assumed Puar's a girl.
Cat or Mouse? I've heard some people calling him a mouse and some a cat. I've always gone with cat.
That's about it...

I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Both Pu-ehr and Puer seem to be accepted spelling.

Toriyama said he was always intended as to be male.

I... can't see why anyone would think he looks like a mouse. Look at the ears, the tail, everything. He's clearly a cat.

This may assist in what you are looking for. It's, VIZ so take it with a grain of salt.
Dragonball Graphic Novel Volume #2. Akira Toriyama's "ASK ME ANYTHING" Corner! reprint of original questions asked by JP readers.
Q. I like Pu'ar. I told my brother that Pu'ar is a cat and he told me that Pu'ar is a mouse. Who is right?
A. Actually, Pu'ar is neither a cat nor a mouse, but I drew him a little bit like a cat.

INTENDED to be, or IS? I thought Puar was clearly called a girl at least once in the whole series. I could be wrong though.
And if Puar was a mouse, or a male, my picture of Korin hitting on her would make no sense anymore.

That was one flub by Funi in the Ocean dub. Aside from that the show and manga don't refer to Puar by any gendar-specific labels.

Puar is male. If I remember correctly Oolong refers to him as "he" near the beginning of DB. I'll see if I can track down the part....
By the way, I've had people argue with me citing the voice as proof that Puar is female. It is common in anime for little creatures, even if they're males to have female sounding voices since they're supposed to be little and cute. Examples include Chopper from One Piece, Kero-chan from Card Captor Sakura, and Mokona from Magic Knights Rayearth.

At least in the country I live, Puar was always refered to be male. Pretty much like Nermal from Garfield, Puar looks cute is, but his gender is male. And if I remember correcly, Puar said in episode 45 that Hasky looked pretty, at least in the dub I watched. And I have watched other dubs and Puar is always said to be male, only Funimation and Ocean refer Puar to be female. Also in the original series, before the 22nd Tournament when the characters go sleep, the boys go to one room and girls to another, and Puar stays with the boys, so I think that we already have many proofs that indicate that Puar is male. Even if he is voiced by a female actress that is no reason, because both Chaozu, Dende, Krillin, Goku, Gohan and Goten are as well, even on Funimation's dub.

Is Puar male or female?
Good question... ^^;;; I've always wondered myself. Cathy Weseluck (Ocean dub, seasons 1 and 2) always made Puar sound female, at least to me.
However, in the manga, Puar refers to himself as ボク - "boku," which is usually a male personal pronoun. ..Though I have heard girls in other anime use "boku..."
...I guess I'll go with male ^^

Regarding Puar's species, I'd like to add that, though possibly not intended to be an actual cat, he looks identical to cats Toriyama drew in Dr. Slump, save for the nose and whiskers. I dunno if anyone else recalls the little family of felines Ms. Yamabuki ran into during her jog in Volume 4. Already knowing Puar's species was supposed to be ambiguous, I couldn't help but take notice.

I always thought Puar was a male, but I never stopped to think it was even based on an animal, I just never looked at him in that way, it's just a floating creature, but he does look like a cat now you mention it.
