An Extra Finger Or Two

Post by DBZ MAN » Thu Mar 16, 2006 4:01 pm

Why does Piccolo and some other characters (namley 1st stage Cell and Buu) have 5 fingers in the series when they originaly had 3 or something in the manga?
Someone asked this in a Viz comic and the Editor replied that it might have been easier for the animators to draw and not get confused but he wasn't sure. Is this true or is there another reason?

I never noticed  they may have changed it becuase of the cultural associations with missing fingers in Japan. People with missing fingers are often associated with the Yakuza ^^
Of course the thing about the animators can be as true since it'd be a pain to remember who has what.

The animator theory is the simplist one, and therefore, most likely to be correct. Keep in mind that even just one episode contanes hundreds of drawing which some poor saps had to make up. Giving everyone the same number of fingers would just be one way of keeping things simple(since they don't have to worry about if it should 3 or 5 or 48 fingers).

You know I think this question has become the most popular ever. It's the third thread I've seen on this now.....

The animation theory is the correct answer by the way.

All the Boo's had "Mitten" hands in the Manga, just to clarify.

As for Piccolo - I have a better question. Why are his arms yellow originally, yet changed to pink for the Anime?

Well, a lot of color changed from manga to anime and that's hardly the most noticeable. The animators just thought certain colors would look better, and for the most part I think they were right.

I believe Piccolo does have less than five fingers in the original Dragon Ball.
Just like his blood color changes from Red to Purple so does the amount of Fingers.
Though more of this has happened like Kuririn having the white in his eyes while in the beginning he only has black dots as eyes (or something like that)

When does this happen? Unless you're referring to the recent video games.

Sorry I meant it the other way around.
In the beginning (original Dragon Ball) Kuririn white around his pupils until the eyes stop.
Later he only has pupils and some lines where the eyes stop but they aren't white anymore this might have been done to make a more clear destinction between Young Kuririn and the Older one, nonetheless it does change.

Edit:
I just checked eps 126 in which I suppose Kuririn is still young and he hasn't any white eyes anymore so it probably changes earlier.
