Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
and that there were greater forces at work?
I fail to fathom a coincidental bump turns Goku into Earth's greatest hero and one of the strongest fighter in the 7th universe.

You can make a too good to be true argument about everything else in the series too, and every other series ever for that matter. I don't have a problem believing that he bumped his head as a baby and miraculously turned good, it's just a part of the story. It's no more unbelievable than the walking-talking animals (as king even), the reincarnation of demons, or flying clouds that only let you ride them if you're morally pure at heart.

You make some very good points, sirTyro wrote:You can make a too good to be true argument about everything else in the series too, and every other series ever for that matter. Maybe Iam reading too much into it, but it would make a very interesting plot point in the future.

Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
Dunno why he turned good, but I think the reason he bumped his head was that he was very weak (low Battle Power level) and thus clumsy and prone to that kind of accident. A powerful Saiyan would never have gotten his head bumped.
Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
It wasn't that he turned good, but he lost his memory and thus forgot his mission. He then learnt his kind hearted traits and what is right and wrong from grandpa Gohan and these good-natured feelings grew as he met new people he cared for.Marco Polo wrote:Dunno why he turned good, but I think the reason he bumped his head was that he was very weak (low Battle Power level) and thus clumsy and prone to that kind of accident. I like to think that moment was a special coincidence in history that ended up saving the universe.

If you ask me, I think Grandpa Gohan threw him off that cliff on purpose.

No, it's not a coincidence; Mr. Toriyama planned this since the beginning...

I'm still bothered about this though /:
Perhaps, I should just accept it was a coincidence.

Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
Wasn't it revealed in the beginning of the Saiya-Jin arc, though? That's hardly the beginning of the whole story.Legendary Saiya-Jin wrote:No, it's not a coincidence; Mr. Toriyama planned this since the beginning...
Goku bumping his head may have lead to the majority of the story being possible, but still it was a coincidence.
Unless we go by the theory stated above that Grandpa Gohan deliberately threw Goku down the cliff because Goku was annoying.
Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
I think the ellipse he used at the end there was supposed to represent sarcasm. Like "Why didn't Toriyama ever have anyone guess that Goku was an alien pre-Z?" "I dunno. I mean, he had the WHOLE thing planned out from the beginning after all..." Maybe one of these bad boys would've helped (if he was being sarcastic):Godo wrote:Wasn't it revealed in the beginning of the Saiya-Jin arc, though? This kind of reminds me of "the greater force" that was mentioned in Chrono Trigger.

I believe it was entirely coincidence, and I like it that way.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
It was a time travelling Vegeta trying to kill Goku but instead he just made him who he is today (and who Vegeta despises so), muhahaha...

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
Yes it was just coincidence. The bump only gave Goku amnesia. Gohan just happened to be a good person, who taught Goku how to be good. Goku could have just as easily been raised by Pilaf, Tao Pai Pai, Crane Hermit, or Commander Red when he bumped his head (had they been at the spot where he landed as a baby)Baggie_Saiyan wrote:and that there were greater forces at work?

Smallville aside, there was no greater force at work as to where Superman's ship crashed. If he was found by the Luthors, the Waynes, or landed in Russia for example, we would most likely have a really different visitor from another planet on our hands.

Actually, the anime actually pointed it out during DB. When Sargeant Metallic scans Goku in his "terminator vision", it says Goku is an "Alien". The first time I watched it was very strange for me. Then I learned Goku was a Saiyajin and I thought it had been planned all along. I just checked the dates and the episode aired almost three years before Goku was revealed to be a Saiyan. A big, BIG coincidence.
There's also a point later on where Goku says he might not be human at all, because of his stamina and ability are... well, "inhuman". It might have been with his fight with King Piccolo or during the 23rd Budokai. I don't know if that's only on the Latin Spanish Dub. Sure, he might be a monster that transforms during full moon, but.... xD

Also Oolong asks Goku if he is an alien after the first time Goku goes Oozaru. Yeah... a talking shape-shipting pig who went to school with a talking shape-shifting flying blue cat is asking Goku if he's an alien.

Re: Was Goku's bump on his head more then a coincidence?
Yeah, but that's you retroactively placing your future knowledge into that scene. That most likely didn't mean "alien from another planet" but "alien to this base." The word alien doesn't exclusively refer to extra-terrestrials. So, even ignoring it's anime-exclusive, I wouldn't put it in the same category as Oolong's comment or Goku's own later comment.soulnova wrote:Actually, the anime actually pointed it out during DB. No, it meant alien as in extraterrestrial. I have the proof here.

**The organism was the xenomorph, the alien.
BTW, I didn't know Goku was a Saiyan until much later, one or two years perhaps.
I just find it funny because it actually hit the nail on that regard. Accidental foreshadowing.
