Non-Anime, Dragon Ball Fan

Post by Thanos » Wed Apr 24, 2013 7:24 pm

Is anyone else like me, in that, you are a huge fan of Dragon Ball but not anime in general? I honestly can't say I watch, follow or own any memorabilia or even have any interest in any other anime than Dragon Ball. To me, maybe I'm wrong, but personally I feel it transcends anime in a way. It just doesn't feel like one to me. No series before or since has captured the feeling.

Common situation: I mention Dragon Ball, and someone says, "Yeah, I'm not really into anime." and I'm like... me too. Of course, confusion ensues. :) Surely I can't be alone in this?

I don't see how it's any different from liking, say, baseball, but not considering yourself an overall sports fan.

Which is totally OK.

I'm not too into other anime besides the three Dragon Ball series (I guess 4 if you want to count Kai); though I do plan on finding other series. I was thinking of maybe Yu Yu Hakasho since it's not terribly long like a certain pirate inspired series.

I do like the anime but I can see why you just like the manga.

I'm a big Dragon Ball fan (enough to have 6,843 posts as of this post, after all), but I'm also a big fan of other Japanese comics and animation. Dragon Ball got me into this stuff, but the quality of the work is what has kept me in it. Japanese animation has given me a real appreciation for quality in general, especially as I've come into the 'sakuga' fandom. Moving from learning about Dragon Ball staff and animators to those of other shows helps. I also find the general workings of the industry very interesting.

I do have other, 'non-Japanese' fandoms, though, like Star Trek and film and television in general.

I like other anime and manga besides Dragon Ball. I like other Japanese non anime/manga franchises as well.

I'm a huge fan of Dragonball and Yu Yu Hakusho...If you like Dragonball; I promise you'll like Yu Yu Hakusho, it has a bit of a slow start but I think you should try it.

To stay OT I find myself not into anime either, aside from a few specific series.

Yeah, for sure watch Yu Yu Hakusho.

Eh, I like a lot of anime/manga, but am not too big of a fan on the Naruto/One Piece/Bleach (I actually posted about that yesterday in a different thread). I actually know a lot of people who like DBZ and dislike opposing anime.

My friend is a huge Bleach fan and I pointed out so many flaws to him about the show but he still continues watching it, I told him I couldn't watch it with him because it was horrible, the filler placements were worse than DBZ and sometime you'd have a a few episodes of filler in the middle of a fight for flashbacks.

Those filler arcs are what save the canon arcs (not to mention add their own special something to the franchise). The creative energy and resources put into Bleach's filler is a big part of what makes the Bleach cartoon better than Dragon Ball Z.

Hmm, I'd say I'm like that but I do enjoy Miyazaki films and few other anime series like Azumanga Daioh, Evangelion, Higurashi...
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I don't think it is rare. To a lot of people it is just a show they grew up watching or comic they grew up reading.
But yeah, I like reading other Japanese comics.

It's not too uncommon of a situation. I know plenty of folks I grew up with who liked DBZ back in middle/high school, but never watched any other anime. It is a testament to the strength and appeal of the Dragon Ball franchise that it's accessible to so many (anime fan or not.) In my case, I was already watching anime well before I got into Dragon Ball, so there's quite a few franchises I'm a fan of. Gundam, Macross, Eva, Hajime no Ippo, One Piece, Giant Robo, to name a few...

Here's my question to you, Thanos... have you tried to watch or read any other anime or manga? I'd be glad to recommend some titles that are good for newcomers, or are similar to Dragon Ball.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I thought Bleach peaked with the earlier arcs (basically until Aizen's reveal as a villain). I feel like I've been on the same arc for years now, another thing is that the series has way too many character. There will be episodes where I see two guys fighting and I will be like "wait, who are these guys again?"

The comic is already two arcs and a hundred chapters past the Aizen stuff.

I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan but am not a huge fan of any other anime. There are a few other series I have been into to varying degrees (most notably Tenchi Muyo!, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon and the few Miyazaki films that I've seen) but nothing like Dragon Ball. Honestly, I find the whole concept of an "anime fan" a bit silly. It's just too broad a category. That's like saying, "Oh, you like Family Guy? Then you're a fan of all American animation!" I am reminded of what Brad Bird said in the commentary for The Incredibles: that he hates when animation is referred to as a "genre" because it's not. A genre is a type of storytelling and/or tone: comedy, drama, mystery, porn, etc. Animation is simply a method of storytelling and can be used to tell any of those genres. To say you like an example of that is equivalent to liking everything from that is rather absurd, don't you think?

I mostly agree with you. I mean, I like plenty of anime, but does that make me an "anime fan"? Probably not, since I don't like anime because they're anime--I like certain anime based on their individual merits. That said, I don't have a problem with people saying they're a fan of books, or video games, or cinema, or comics. I kind of consider myself a fan of animation in general, which I guess is sort of the same thing. Maybe those things are less specific? They have their own pros and cons as a way of telling a story, after all; what works for a book may not work in a movie, and what works in a comic might not work in a book.

That's true as well. You do have a point. Maybe I was a bit too hard on the classification in general. I guess I can say that I definitely don't see it as impossible to be a fan of something of something so general (or of any of the other things you mentioned). I guess it was more just defensive against my observation that liking one Japanese cartoon automatically makes you an "anime fan." I never hear someone saying, "I really like Back to the Future/Batman/Harry Potter," and someone responding, "Oh, you're a movie/comic/literature fan?"

I'm a fan of stories. Occasionally, Japanese cartoons such as Dragon Ball tell interesting stories.
