The reason I dislike it is because I think it's trying way to hard to make the same point the Graded Forms and Super Saiyan 2 already did.Brodes wrote:I really believe this whole "skinny" thing is for the exact same reasons as the Gohan Buu saga dislike. Is the skinny body of the SSJ God a Toei misinterpretation?
Re: Is the skinny body of the SSJ God a Toei misinterpretati
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
Re: Is the skinny body of the SSJ God a Toei misinterpretati
uh I do think that Toriyama is involved, people would talk to each other? I mean, it's not like he just gave away a drawing and that's it. It's not a misinterpretation.
Come on, guys. People aren't that dumb to actually not KNOW that his recent artstyle is all bodies are skinny.
I think they deliberately chose to make him skinny like Toriyama's recent style.

The SSJ God form being thinner is just a response to the recent (boring) trend of main protagonists having thin character designs. Sora, Ichigo, Tsuna, Ultimo etc.

I doubt it. Toriyama was doing the "smaller/thinner characters are more powerful than the buffer guys" long before they were around.Kuwabara wrote:The SSJ God form being thinner is just a response to the recent (boring) trend of main protagonists having thin character designs. So you believe all protagonists should be ultra buff and muscular?Kuwabara wrote:The SSJ God form being thinner is just a response to the recent (boring) trend of main protagonists having thin character designs. Sora, Ichigo, Tsuna, Ultimo etc.

I know getting skinnier is unique because usually buffing up makes you stronger, but it's still looks silly to shrink down a size or two. It would be nice if we get an explanation for the getting skinnier idea.

I was unaware that SSGod Goku was super skinny...
I only saw two images of his head, so I was unaware. Looking at that concept art image, he looks like he belongs in Looney Toons or something with those really thin and tall proportions and goofy huge feet. I can't stand it.

Freeza, Cell, and Buu all got stronger by bulking up. In Buu's case, bulking down made him several times weaker.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Freeza and Cell also became stronger when they became smaller (e.g. third form to final form for Freeza, semi-perfect to perfect for Cell).

Freeza shrinks in size, his physique is about the same. Cell's physique seems to increase a little as his size went down. For Goku it's like his body aged while his face stayed the same.Bussani wrote:You mean like Freeza and Cell did?dbzfan7 wrote:I know getting skinnier is unique because usually buffing up makes you stronger, but it's still looks silly to shrink down a size or two.

Not really. When they shrink in size, they go from say, wrestlers (third form Furiza, Semi-perfect Cell fro example), to Bruce Lee. Compact, toned, well muscled but still slim.dbzfan7 wrote:Freeza shrinks in size, his physique is about the same. Cell's physique seems to increase a little as his size went down. 3rd form doesn't drop much. It also drops into a final form supressed state. Cell's physique from semi to perfect is practically the same.Brodes wrote:

Maybe it's a fashion thing. Back in the 80's and early 90s huge muscular heroes were all the rage but in recent years people seem to prefer slim men.
I'll have to wait till I see the film to decide if I like it or not.

Re: Is the skinny body of the SSJ God a Toei misinterpretati
Toriyama's recent style is skinny bodies for characters. It's with all his characters, not only his DBZ ones.
I wipe it off the tile, the light is brighter this time, everything is 3D blasphemy.
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up, this is not the way I picture me.
I can't control my shakes, how the hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong.
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory?

Re: Is the skinny body of the SSJ God a Toei misinterpretati
Well it was definitely intentional.
I handled the roughs for Super Saiyan God. It was “a being that surpasses everything” so I drew a character more built than Super Saiyan, with a cape, but then illustrations with a completely different feel came back from Toriyama-sensei…. It was too different from my own internal image, so I tried suggesting the more sturdily-drawn character one more time, and then Sensei told me that it really was all wrong. (laughs)
