Piccolo's Death in GT

Post by DragonBalllKaiHD » Fri May 31, 2013 5:48 pm

Hey, guys. As most of you know I'm pretty much a huge fan of GT more than the original and its sequel. So this topic mainly focuses on his death in Dragon Ball GT. I was thinking for a while how this impacts the franchise and how it affects us. Take a moment and think.

In Z, Piccolo's death was pretty much a turning point for his character development. Before that he was evil through and through. All that changed when he took Gohan into the wilderness desert. By befriending Gohan, he was willing to sacrifice just to save Goku's son's life, and shed a tear. But he was eventually brought back to life to face Freeza. He continued on living on Earth with Goku and his crew.

But in GT, his death was much more meaningful. His death means there's no more Black Star Dragon Ball for anyone to use. On top of that he remained dead. When Goku met Piccolo for the last time, I felt a little bit more emotional. I mean, no one will ever see Piccolo again and Goku's leaving to some unknown place. He left a pretty good impression on Earth. Who would have thought that he became a good guy and was willing to die for the sake of Earth?

I'm curious on what you feel about his death in GT. Does it impact you? What is your opinion on this one?

I really loved that scene where he bids farewell to Son Gohan. It was bliss. The fact that he wants to sacrifice himself for others due to something he basically didn't create but knew he had the only responsibility over it, made him even nobler.

It was my favorite scene in GT, and one of my favorites overall. And along with Goku's last meeting with Krillin, Piccolo's and Goku's final conversation was one of the high points of GT as well.

I remember Piccolo's death was the thing that I remember people bitch about on forums back in 2002 or 2003.

I agree that they are both great moments, but I don't find it more meaningful that he does it for more people. Piccolo was Goku's greatest enemy, so dying to protect his arch-enemy's son is a far more meaningful. I also don't consider either a sacrifice. He's not giving up his life for a lower or non value. He's dying to protect his best friend.

I liked the Japanese music being played during Piccolo's speech to Son Gohan. His death is one of the best moments of Dragon Ball GT for me.

Hmm I suppose I'll take back what I said... 2 good things came out of GT. A touching Gohan/Piccolo moment and SSJ4.

What about the final episode? Full of great moments.

I liked the moment itself, especially Piccolo's conversation with Son Goku right before it happens. I really don't like the placing. Baby was just defeated and then the Ultimate Dragon Balls were still a thing and something happened so everyone was still going to die. Then Piccolo, who you thought died in the only other GT episode he was in, comes back and then dies. It was a good moment and a great character ending but it is sorta weighed down by everything else.

It was ok... I'm one of those wierdos that preferred the ending to DBZ because it was left open to other adventures.

I also liked the brief interaction between Buu and Uub during the Baby fight.

I was thinking of something more along the lines of Goku and Kuririn's final moment, the final scene, or the moment between Vegeta and Pan where he tells her to hold on to Goku's gi.

Oozaru, fair enough about leaving it open to further adventures. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Dragon Ball's ending (the end of the tournament, not the wedding dress arc). The reason I'm not fond of DBZ's ending is Goku leaving everyone to train with a kid he doesn't know and the implication that he leaves his family for a while. I would've liked it more if Toriyama didn't imply GOku was leaving his loved ones for an extended period. For crying out loud, he can teleport. I would've prefered the party episode as the finale. Maybe the episode isn't that good, but I love the end where it basically says "Everything's better with Goku around".

Yeah, I mentioned Goku and Krillin's moment earlier in the thread. The Vegeta and Pan one is good as well; I had forgotten about it. But I'm still really fond of the Uub/Buu stuff, since Uub still being played up as Goku's successor at this point, and this was when he came face to face with his origins. Unfortunately, GT never did anything with it, but it was a nice scene.

I never really got much out of Goku and Krillin's friendship. I often wonder how they are best friends.

I was never the biggest fan of Uub, so that scene never meant that much to me.

Yeah, Krillin was the first person his own age that Goku had ever spent an extended period of time with, and they went through a lot together.

Their on screen interactions don't set up a deep friendship.

A shared experience like that doesn't set up deep friendship? Goku and Kuririn are both good people at heart and love martial arts, so there's shared interests.

I get that, my problem is that they don't hang out much past Dragon Ball.
