The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.

Just because it's ficton doesn't mean it can't disturb you, and personally, I find Roshi to be very disturbing (though that's more in light of the Jimmy Savile scandal).

It could be disturbing, but I don't think it gives you a reason to think that the author was sick in the head or anything.

If Gohan was written more like his age, it might've disturbed me more. I guess that means I'm cool with child abuse as long as said child is precocious.
This is one thing that wouldn't translate well to a live action adaptation.
I'm going add a wink wink here so people know I'm joking. About the adaptation, not child abuse.

Re: The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.
I've often said it, but at the end of the day this is Gohan's get-out-of-jail-free card. He's his father's son; he's incredibly difficult to break both physically and psychologically, even with his less rugged temperament, and can only get pushed so far by the limits of Shonen. There are moments where he should be shaken to the core where he isn't in the least, and the one time he's supposed to be it doesn't make sense. And because he's Goku's son, Toriyama can get away with that.Naughty Kinto Un wrote:If Gohan was written more like his age, it might've disturbed me more. The thing with Roshi is that we know he's a good guy deep down. You're making the connection with Jimmy Savile, but Roshi would never harm children or take advantage of the helpless, however old they are. Everything he's done has been essentially harmless, he hasn't scared or distressed anyone and he wouldn't want to, and he's also never abused his powers, which would make it incredibly easy to sexually assault people if he wanted to. Roshi is a good person, he just isn't ashamed of his overactive sex drive or afraid to try his chances at getting some.Hades wrote:Just because it's ficton doesn't mean it can't disturb you, and personally, I find Roshi to be very disturbing (though that's more in light of the Jimmy Savile scandal).

Speaking of Roshi. Had he ever have sex? Or is he some obese with women because of him being a virgin.
Re: The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.
There's probably no canonical answer to that, but I'm going to say that in my head-canon he got plenty in his youth, being a world-champion and all, he just doesn't anymore because he's old.TheGmGoken wrote:Speaking of Roshi. The real question is: can Goku actually be sexually aroused, or did he have to use all of his Ki to get hard for Chi-Chi?
Except he kinda did take advantage of Bulma (or do we call her Buruma around here?) early in the series. Yes. As...aroused is natural. So in a way he could. Now by looking at her maybe not. But when they are...making babies then yes. I wonder how the hell he didn't kill ChiChi as a SSJ. Maybe he destroyed that and that's why they didn't have a 3rd child. The real question is: can Goku actually be sexually aroused, or did he have to use all of his Ki to get hard for Chi-Chi?
Re: The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.
He said that if she flashed her panties he'd give her "something", she hadn't seen the dragon ball yet at that point. She was in a position to say no, and it was just her panties, which is why she did it - it's basically like him seeing her in a bikini.Toparaman wrote:The real question is: can Goku actually be sexually aroused, or did he have to use all of his Ki to get hard for Chi-Chi?

As for her name, people don't really have a problem with Bulma, Blooma, Broom... whatever you want to say. However, there was this one time that someone spelled Freeza with an "i" in it, and he was reduced to a pile of ash, so now the forum has an autocorrection for that.

That's true, Roshi did kinda sorta take advantage of Bulma there. Thing is though, it's a little hard to feel she's been horribly mistreated considering...just a few chapters before she was offering to show Goku her butt.

Yeah, and she didn't take much convincing to show Roshi either, the second time he didn't even ask, he was just unsure about giving her the dragon ball so she made his mind up for him. She never liked it when he touched her, but then she just hit him and shrugged it off. I just imagine that if she'd actually been upset by it he'd have apologised and not done it again.
Didn't he also say at some point in the Saiyan saga that he did it to be funny?

Kakarot was like half a day old and they shoved him in a capsule and shot him clear across the galaxy and everyone seems fine with THAT.

Re: The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.
I've been more or less desensitized to violence over the years so I could honestly say it doesn't really bug me. If it was footage of a real kid then that's something else entirely but again, not really disturbing to me. If anything it adds to his character.

However, Roshi's behaviour towards Bulma (and other women) in Dragonball is very creepy.Fizzer wrote:The thing with Roshi is that we know he's a good guy deep down. Roshi's not rewarded for the behavior and it's not played as malicious. It's like Cartman in South Park, in real life I doubt a kid that racist would have any friends, but because it's a cartoon and he's a 3rd/4th grader and he isn't rewarded for being an little punk.

It's just the way that sort of creepy behaviour is played for laughs and the whole Jimmy Savile scandal in the UK that has made roshi come across as really creepy to me.ABED wrote:Roshi's not rewarded for the behavior and it's not played as malicious. Besides, I don't really think you can compare South Park and Dragonball's humour, since they are so completely different in tone and delivery.

Re: The violence towards child Gohan is kinda disturbing.
The point of Gohan's struggles isn't to take joy in child abuse but to drive home the point of how dangerous and ruthless the enemies are, that they would do that to him.
Also in Roshi's case, the perverted old man is a pretty common thing in most anime. It's just played for laughs. It's like saying when Homer strangles Bart in the Simpsons that child services should come and take Bart away. Obviously it is not meant to be taken seriously.
