An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.

Well if Gotenks is an idiot sure I guess. But Gotenks can win with simply SSJ. Z can only win if he gets Gotenks to defuse and then defeats Goten and Trunks individually.

Z lost because Goku took out a cat toy. Z was unable to resist the urge to go after it and so Goku defeated him by merely catching him (like he would a normal cat). Before that they only exchanged short attacks in their base forms.
So Goku didn't really defeat him in combat. And their fight is no good indicator of Z's maximum power. In fact, at their base, Z appeared to have the advantage and Goku was the first to go SSJ after Z had made him go down. After Goku and Z transformed, Goku immediately took out the cat toy, so they didn't fight with their SSJs.

Since they both had to go SSJ, it's a pretty good indicator that SSJ Gotenks is still more than enough to win. I haven't seen their fight in a while, but unless Z completely dominated Goku to the point it was effortless, then he isn't beating Gotenks unless he defuses. From what I saw they were pretty even. A slight advantage over base Goku with a SSJ multiplier on top of that is nothing to Gotenks.

Neko Majin Z will NOT beat Gotenks. If you think he can, you should be ashamed. The ONLY way he could win is if the author of DBM just decided to make Gotenks be completely stupid...
