Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
I prefer Brian Drummond, but I really like Chris Sabat's Drummond impression a lot.
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
I would say Sabat is my favorite with Horikawa being very close (well at least during the original run), and I like Drummond early on and still think he does some of the lines best. I've only seen parts of the Ocean dub past Namek but mostly I think Sabat is better but Drummond does the best "OVER 9000!!!" and "You won't escape, MY WRATH!" and the power up against Recoome.

But it is also hard to compare considering Sabat has played the role constantly for YEARS (so has the Horikawa) whereas Drummond has been on and off (mostly off). Not to mention, most of you, who are part of the English community on this forum, are also American or have only been exposed to the In-House dub. It really isn't a fair criticism against Drummond if that is the case. Penguintruth's post is the only one I have found so far which is a fair look at the English voice actors. I can say, mine is biased too which is unfair. However, I feel the need to as I think Drummond would get drowned out a time passes on and new fans enter the fandom. Therefore, I need to be the "devil's advocate" when a discussion like this comes up.
Seriously, I am getting tired of the Sabat fan-wanking going on with the FUNi's dub all over the internet with all the newer fans. Even their Kai dub is sub-par compared to most other dubs produced for any other show, which is sad!
I know when DB first came out, in North America, that Drummond had heat, but as time went on, the older fans had appreciated his interpretation of the character because he did a splendid job considering the circumstances.

My Top 1: Ryō Horikawa
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
There's no beating the original but Drummond's Vegeta is so much better than Sabat's that it's not even funny. Sabat is very one note and has very little range while Drummond has charisma to spare. Sometimes I even think his voice fits the character's expressions and actions better than Horikawa. Especially for ones like these

I've heard many complain that Drummond's interpretation is too over the top or cartoony, but it really brings greater contrast to the table considering how calm and collected the character was up until he starting fighting Goku. This dramatic switch in temperament honestly results in better story telling altogether as he becomes more and more frusterated/unhinged at the fact that he's losing the fight. Also, Sabat just doesn't fit the early design of the character much at all. The proportions of his face infer a much younger persona than Sabat is capable of delivering. His voice is just far too deep, not to mention flat.
Feel free to chalk this all up to nostalgia googles though. A lot of it has to do with who ever you saw playing the character first. (seriously though, Drummond's Vegeta is pretty durn good though, especially early on.)

I don't know how any of you can think this is better. It's ridiculously too deep/plain sounding.

I can't stand to listen to Sabat. He just drones on and on.
I really like how you delve into Vegeta's character. I am sure Drummond saw it that way too and used that as his base when playing the character. Considering his even greater improvement of the character in the Namek arc really lets the viewer know that Drummond understands the character.
And yes, I think he outshines Horikawa in many instances.

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Drummond's Vegeta works when he's evil, but unless he deepened it and made it less stereotypically evil sounding, it doesn't work as Vegeta begins to change.
Horikawa's Vegeta voice is also deep, and Sabat's voice is very distinctive. What's wrong with the deep voice? It's ridiculously too deep/plain sounding

I`m sorry, but isn`t anyone allowed to have their own opinion without being called a *someting*-wanker? Well I can't speak for others but I grew up watching DBZ in the UK and saw the entire Westwood dub from the Android saga to the end of Z and I have to say I still prefer Sabat on the whole. I guess I wouldn't say Drummond didn't suit Vegeta at all anymore but had simply lost his edge. It might be because his edge was always the whole evil maniac thing and without that he just came across as underwhelming. Even during the Majin Vegeta episodes he didn't sound nearly as awesome as during the Saban dub. It might be because the Westwood dub was rushed and just bad in general but to me he just came across as sounding the same in pretty much every scene. His tone of voice always sounded the same in the Westwood dub whether he was angry, cocky or scared. He could still probably out-scream Sabat but looking at the entire performance Sabat wins it. If anything I think Drummond did a better job voicing Vegito than Vegeta in the Westwood dub.Attitudefan wrote:But it is also hard to compare considering Sabat has played the role constantly for YEARS (so has the Horikawa) whereas Drummond has been on and off (mostly off). Also you can say the Funi Kai dub is sub-par if you like but compared to the Westwood Ocean dub even Funi's Season 3 dub is gold. The main reason I think that most new fans are into the Funi dub is because Ocean haven't done anything good for the Franchise since 1997. Back then they were this epic cast who nailed DBZ. But since 2001 when the Westwood dub began they've been the cast who screwed up half of DBZ for the UK and Canada. While Funi improved over the course of Z Ocean mostly got worse.

The only real advantage Drummond has over Sabat now is the loudness /intensity of his screams.
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Gotta be Horikawa but Drummond is in close second. He nailed that snarky, arrogant tone so well and yet isn't quite as cartoony as Sabat's voice is.
There's an argument for Sabat's voice fitting Vegeta's taller, more muscular figure later in the series but I don't really know about that. I'm not sure size dictates a person's character and Horikawa certainly isn't anywhere near the levels of harshness in Sabat's voice so I'm happy with Drummond all the way, with regards to the English language version.
So yes - 1) Horikawa 2) Drummond 3) Sabat.

Sabat is not appealing to me mostly for how he sounds. He's the only voice of Vegeta I heard from all the dubs, that sounds most monotonous and unpleasant in my ears.
If I could describe his voice, it would be: ''Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrghh'' His rasp combined with his voice doesn't go well in my ears as it goes for example with Horikawa, because Horikawa has pretty wide range and his Vegeta is more emotional when speaking, which Sabat does by shouting (the most notorious is his portrayal of Shun in Saint Seiya, I had trouble to recognize Vegeta's actor, only sometime later I heard the nuances and had to look on credits, because his voice is pretty deep when playing Vegeta). I don't like the Piccolo's portrayal for the same reason + he sounds too simmilar to Vegeta.

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
There's no doubt in my mind that Drummond has always been superior to Sabat as Vegeta. When I hear Sabat's take he always sounds like he's in a constant state of anger whereas Drummond is able to show other emotions when appropriate. His Vegeta monologues (when he's not confined to the mouth flaps) blow everything Sabat did out of the water. He even managed to convey Vegeta's calm sadistic nature when he fought weaker opponents like Android 19 and Pui Pui which prove he has more range with his voice. On top of that the guy can actually deliver convincing yells and screams whereas Sabat either moaned and grunted or at times when he did yell it lacked the intensity, rage and passion behind Drummond's.
The other thing that has always bothered me about Sabat's Vegeta is that the voice has always been too deep for my liking as Vegeta has always been a short guy regardless of the artstyle and it just never made a lot of sense for him to sound so deep. People keep saying things like "he should have a deeper voice since he get's more muscular" but that makes very little sense to me. You're voice doesn't magically get super deep after gaining muscle. But whatever, people are going to hate on it simply because Sabat's Vegeta is more widespread and that's what they're used to.

Ryo Horikawa obviously, then Eric Legrand comes close in second place for me.DoomieDoomie911 wrote:Mine is Ryo Horikawa, though I also like Chris Sabat a lot too. I like Horikawa for his more calm and collected take, and Sabat for his more rough take. What do you all think?

Chris Sabat, at least in Kai, does a much better job of pulling off the whole cocky, arrogant prince act than Drummond ever did, IMO. The only times I really liked Drummond was when he was yelling.
Even if Drummond did sound more around Vegeta's actual age, I still find myself liking Sabat's gruffer portrayal of Vegeta much more.

Most people who are saying Chris Sabat are taking into consideration his most recent work, which hasn't been around for very long. The rest of this post just comes off as irrational, borderline martyr-dom for the Ocean dub. Just because Drummond didn't have the largest body of work doesn't mean it's not possible to objectively compare the two.Attitudefan wrote:But it is also hard to compare considering Sabat has played the role constantly for YEARS (so has the Horikawa) whereas Drummond has been on and off (mostly off). Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
I'd say Sabat has Vegeta's attitude down for the most part. I will admit, he sounds a bit too... gruff and deep for Vegeta, at about any age. I'd rather someone like Crispin Freeman, Dan Green, Travis Willingham, Chris Guererro... I'd have to really research, but the fact is, Sabat is still doing a pretty damn good job nowadays. Especially with Vegeta in the later arcs when he's a bit more... full grown.
