Is there anything you like better in the dub?

I'll admit.....there are a few episodes that I liked better in the English dub than in the original Japanese version. One of them was the episode of Buu's hatching. Everything from the music to the dialogue was on point and excellent, especially in the short fight sequence between Goku & Vegeta. Even the added "kamehameha" by Gohan was well excepted. Yeah, FUNimation did a great job with that particular episode.

I like how in the Funimation dub, there isn't complete silence. Silence is fine, but when you're watching three or four episodes full of nothing but staring, you at least want to hear some background other than waves hitting rocks.

I like the voices.

I like how the characters were developed, I like the added gags, I like the gags that they kept in from the Japanese, I like Funi Vegetto, Veku and GT Gogeta better than their Japanese versions - much more interesting. (Although, I thought Gogeta in Movie 12 sounded off.

Kinda going a bit off topic here, but one thing I absolutely hated about FUNi's dub of movie 12 was one of the times when Vegeta and Goku tried to fuse; they dub had them say fu when they should've said sion, sion when they should've said ha, and ha when they should've been interrupted by Janemba's blast

. I mean, you can even tell that it was off because of their poses at that time

Anyways, another thing I liked about the dub is when something like Goku saying "we have to fight" is made more powerful by having the dub say something like "we're fighting to protect those we care for." That kind of stuff really develops the characters

I really like the rock music in Movie 8. FUNi voices sounds not too bad and I may include the difference between things like the silence in the JP version while there's music in the FUNi version.

If I remember more that I like, I'll edit this post.

I personally don't think there's too much silence in the japanese version, just at the more appropiate & subtle moments.

The part where Gohan is about to be beaten by Cell, and Vegeta comes from nowhere and blasts him allowing Gohan to gain the upper hand is absolutely priceless in the Funimation dub. It captures the emotion of the entire ordeal in a way the Japanese version doesn't.

I'm not too sure about Dragonball Z (I missed about 2.5/3rds of it), but in the original Dragonball there was a scene in one episode where Goku and co surfaced on the island where General Blue's base was. I haven't seen the episode in a long time but at once point Goku began talking through a microphone, and his voice was being broadcasted in the main communications room the Red Ribbon Army headquarters. Everyone basically spazzed out, but some of the lines in the English dub of it just made me laugh at the sheer idioticy of the situation (in a good way. It was ridiculous in a good way), such as this:

"You IDIOT! I am Red! Supreme Commander Red!"
"You have a funny face."

But the quotes don't really do it justice.

It's funny how people can take that dialogue change differently. I didn't like it and thought it was too "preachy" and "after-school special" sounding for my tastes. It was also not really in Piccolo's true character in my opinion since the only person he really had any close connection to was Gohan. He was always a loner and happy with his hermit-warrior life. The dub line makes it seem like he's sudenyl a happy member of the "Z-gang family". :/

I was just going to say something like that...in that I felt the Dub Line was completely out of Piccolo's character, and a "message for the kids on racism."

Well, in FUNi's defense...

In Japanese, there are certain nuances in the speech that makes it... not... correct

In English, there are no alternates of speech that change how it is, except for the way you say it... so...

Oh yeah, another dub line I like is from the 10th anniversary special when the sun's rising (or was it setting?) when Goku and co were waiting for Roshi and Turtle to arrive. As the gang looks at the sun, Oolong kinda ruins the ambiance of the moment and says that the sun looks "like a beautifully fried egg-yolk."

Wow, you took that completely differently than I did. I didn't take it at all to mean that he cared for the others or considered himself part of the group. It felt, to me, like he was referring directly to Gohan and nothing and no one else. Basicly saying "Sure, they're my people, but I don't give a crap about them, Gohan's here on Earth so that's where I am." That's the feeling it gave me.

Suprised no one at all had mentioned Brian Drummond's take on Vegeta flipping out on Namek when he found out his Dragon Ball was stollen by Gohan. o_o

That was probably the one and only thing I liked that the dub did an incredible job on, though I put more of praise for Brian for doing the voice as he did there.

Well I don't know how it is in the dub (but it's probably better) but I thought the music that plays when Cell was powering-up to max power at the beginning of his fight with Gohan didn't fit the scene at all.

The music I'm talking about is also used when Goku creates the Genki-dama in movie 7 and against Buu and this piece does fit in that context, but it's so out of place during Cell's power-up.

I'd just like to point out here that the FUNimation theme used when Complete Cell goes full power isn't found when Goku is preparing his Genki Dama in Movie 7, Movie 7 only comprimises of [bland] GT themes as far as I recall.

But I do concur, it is used out of context, as is many of the themes. But some of them are quite amazing IMHO - notably the theme used in FUNimation's Trunks TV Spot, Goku's Spirit Bomb, Super Saiyan Vegeta's theme, Gohan powers up (the theme used when Ultimate Gohan enters the scene), the Super Saiyan 3 theme, the theme used when Vegeta powers up, a lot of Mirai Trunk's themes, and so forth, all quite memorable pieces by Bruce Faulconer.... again, IMO.

Personally I always enjoyed that piece, and I think it fits very well with what's going on, particularly when played against the city peoples' fears of the end. If you try not to focus on Cell himself in that scene, but on the significance that his power-up means for the rest of the world, then I think it works out well. It's another one of those offbeat scores in the original that ends up turning out nicely in my opinion.
