^ Like I said, it had its cool moments (including those you posted), but it still felt boring to me. I liked it, but it's not in my favorite fights.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I dunno how you guys got on the subject, but I do find Goku vs. Cell comparable to the fight in this film. At the start of the fight there isn't really any great sense of urgency, so the fight doesn't seem as intense. You almost get the impression that they're fighting for the sake of fighting (which is kinda true), but later on they both seem to fabricate the intensity really well. For BOG, it's when they start fighting underground and in Goku vs. Cell it's in episode 179 when the animation gets bumped up a bit.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:^ Like I said, it had its cool moments (including those you posted), but it still felt boring to me. Saw the movie, and I enjoyed the battles and CG for the most part, but when I noticed the characters themselves being CG I kinda felt bad...It's a good thing they stopped that once SSG dropped out of the film. xP

I used to get legal Chinese anime DVDs from some dead site or YesAsia. If it's legit then we'll see it on there once it's out.B wrote:Woah, do I need to learn how to use Amazon China?

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
I watched this movie recently and really loved it.
I felt that it was directed towards those who have grown up with the series, it had a certain level of maturity that I haven't seen shown in the series before, mainly with the allusion to the subject of birth; the child Videl was carrying inside her. This aspect of the series is usually 'ignored', and the children of Z usually just pop up from nowhere. I found it lifting that in order for the God form to be achieved, it was necessary to use the energy of Videl's unborn child by forming a cirle and holding hands. It also gave really good fan service for Vegeta, a lot of the movie was focused on him and the softening of his ego. I was laughing real hard when he was shouting 'Don't touch my Bulma!'
-BEST PART OF MOVIE- I was also ROFL when Bills owned SSJ3 Goku with the flick of a finger. o_O
I saw some pictures of Super Saiyan God Goku before I saw the movie, and from the few screens I saw I felt that the transformation sucked and looked like KaioKen. But I didn't get that feeling when watching the film, there was a 'mystical' sense about him and the colours really looked amazing!
It felt like a fitting finale to Dragonball, with a sense of the Z Fighters in their 'twilight' years. To me this movie was the 'final piece of the puzzle' for Z, and I like how the revelation of 'multiple universes' opens up a whole new world of possibilties for the continuation of the series.

As an official release from Hong Kong, I'd have to assume they'd be at least passable.sangofe wrote:You gotta ask though... By who are those english subtitles made, and how engrishy (or should I say chingrishy?) will they be?
It's mainland China that scoffs at both copyright law and competent translation.

Hmm...will they be putting out a DVD as well, and if so, are they the same region as us? I'm guessing no on at least the last question, but it would be nice to have an official option available, in case we really do never get it here.

Well, I checked the thread last night and couldn't find any confirmation on a release date but if they have info on the specs, I'm pretty sure it's going to be coming out within the next month or so. And there's alotta people in Hong Kong capable of the English language. It won't be too "Engrishy". I used to translate for DVD releases in Hong Kong myself so I have some experience on that aspect. The only possible reason Hong Kong DVDs would get "Engrishy" is due to the tight schedules and deadlines. We literally have 2 months between theatrical release and home video release to get everything ready. My worst experience was having to proofread everything for the DVD release of Jackie Chan's "Rob-B-Hood". I had to spend an all-nighter while my boss was constantly telling me to hurry the hell up. You can probably imagine what I did after I finished.
Bluray will be using the same region code but DVD will not be as North America is region 1 and Southeast Asia is locked to Region 3.Gyt Kaliba wrote:Hmm...will they be putting out a DVD as well, and if so, are they the same region as us? Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
Was thinking about the movie today, and I've come to the conclusion that the most disappointing aspect of the film (for me) was the simple fact that it didn't actually feel like a movie (if you've read my posts on the forum, then you probably know I'm very big on this). Does anyone else feel the same way? I don't know if it's just because I've never actually seen it in theatres, but outside of the opening credits and the final fight scene, nothing about this movie really feels cinematic. I think the fact that a lot of the film takes place in the same location plays a big part in this, as does the simple nature of the story. I gotta be honest, as enjoyable as BOG is, this type of thing really does belong in an hour-at-most special. I think a feature film warrants, and deserves, something a bit more substantial.
One day, one day very soon, I'm gonna gather all of my posts relating to the film and write a full review...I swear, If I haven't done this by the 1st of February, 2014, then you may deactivate my account.

I don't think it so much of as it not feeling like a Dragon Ball movie, but how a Toriyama-written Dragon Ball movie feels like, which IMO is done excellently.DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:Was thinking about the movie today, and I've come to the conclusion that the most disappointing aspect of the film (for me) was the simple fact that it didn't actually feel like a movie (if you've read my posts on the forum, then you probably know I'm very big on this). The problem with the previous 13 films are that while they are indeed action-packed, they never really feel as though they're truly capturing the spirit of Dragon Ball. They lack that certain element which when compared to the Manga or Anime, becomes easier to notice the more you watch them.

Blu-rays are not inherently region-free. North America and Japan happen to share the same region coding (Region A) as opposed to back in the DVD standard days (Region 1 vs Region 2).

Oh, I'm not talking about Dragon Ball movies here. I'm just talking about movies in general. Movies you go all the way to the city to see with friends. Movies you watch in massive rooms with elevated seating and tons of other people. It doesn't feel like it'd be one of those. Now, you could chalk this up to the fact that I haven't actually seen BOG in theatres, but the thing is, the One Piece films (like Strong World) give me that sort of vibe where "this feels like the franchise I love on a much grander scale, on the big screen"; and I'm not even a huge fan of One Piece. A better example is probably The Simpsons Movie. That sort of excitement you get from a movie being based on your favourite franchise- I wanted that feeling from watching Battle of Gods and, like I said, the problem was that it didn't feel like a movie to begin with.Gonstead wrote:I don't think it so much of as it not feeling like a Dragon Ball movie, but how a Toriyama-written Dragon Ball movie feels like, which IMO is done excellently.

You know what, I see exactly what you're getting at, and I feel I agree with you. I loved everything about BoG, and it's easily one of (if not number 1) my top 3 DB films. There's wasn't really a "Grand scale" to it. Which I understand it Toriyama's style, and I love it However, it would be nice to see a DB-film with a more grandiose atmosphere. Another thing would be the colors. The color palette they used was pretty bright (and a little limited) for a theatrical film, when a lot of franchise-movies use a darker/more varied palette.DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:Oh, I'm not talking about Dragon Ball movies here.
