Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
Is it just me or has Kanzenshuu become super relaxed when it comes to the spelling and grammar rule? When I first joined it seemed like you would be called out if you forgot even a comma. Now it seems you can get away with a lot more. I even purposely left out a full stop in one of my posts as a test and it still hasn't been corrected.
Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
A missing full stop doesn't seem like a very good example to me. Such a thing can easily be missed, or overlooked because the rest of the post is fine.
Although I do seem to be seeing less of the red text corrections lately. I'm not sure how to feel about that - I would definitely be happy with better grammar, but I'm not sure how much that practice actually fixes a poster's grammar habits.

I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
I often see weird spellings of words and then wonder if these are exceptions, less common versions than the standard ones or just some colloquial expressions. In the end it turns out they were just errors when I look them up which relieves me because English isn't really my first language and it makes me insecure whether I use the language correctly or not when I see deviations.
I don't know how it was handled in the past, I just remember that mods would edit posts with red corrections here and there and I would hope they continue to do that.

Part of it is also the time of year. We all have various things going on that keep us from being on the forum all the time. We do try to fix where appropriate, however.

Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
From my point of view, if I were staff, I would try to "red" only the most atrocious and pitiable molestations of efficient grammar that produce no clear image of the intended idea or show obvious disregard and/or blatant lack of effort. Everything else is forgivable as long as it's not a consistent and ongoing flaw of common sense. If the moderators tried to correct every single mistake, there wouldn't be any time left over to work on Website Shit or deal with Personal Stuff.
The grammar rule is a guideline to how you as a member should try to word your thoughts, not a precise table as to what will and will not be corrected, when, how often, etc. If you're incomprehensibly sloppy with how you express yourself, then yeah, you'll probably end up seeing red, but generally I would think that there's some allowed variation with grammar so long as you look competent. Not everyone is perfect in their execution of the English language that every little thing is worth constantly correcting.
Remember, the staff counts on you to speak like you're an adult as best you can. Better for you, easier for them and more fun for everyone.
Personal Responsibility. It's a thing.

Just curious. But what if you're not an adult? I'll say below the age of 17(I know 17 isn't really an adult per say but seems mature enough). The rest of your post I agree with since some people on here including myself don't speak English as a native language.Remember, the staff counts on you to speak like you're an adult. Maybe not the best choice of words, given that we know there are younger folks in attendance. Post corrected.

Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
That's always been my philosophy. A couple of typos or a missing comma usually aren't worth the effort, because everyone makes little mistakes once in a while. We also tend to be more lenient with someone whose native language isn't English.Li'l Lemmy wrote:From my point of view, if I were staff, I would try to "red" only the most atrocious and pitiable molestations of efficient grammar that produce no clear image of the intended idea or show obvious disregard and/or blatant lack of effort. But I'm trying to crawl out of my coffin for 2014, so hopefully there will be more bold red semicolons popping up. Man, I love semicolons.

Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
I remember the first year I joined I once slipped and forgot to capitalize a name, and it was marked in red when everything else was grammatically correct, so I don't know if that counts as something minor or not. I did notice tons of "little" things being corrected back in the day (like the corrected post above) which I don't see very often anymore. Things definitely seem a bit more lax now than since then, which I guess is okay, but I have noticed some atrocious grammar not getting corrected every once in a while.

Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
I've seen atrocious spelling which has slipped past the mods; heck, when I first joined I had a few mistakes on my first post and it was heavily edited, including my signature for being too long (no more than five lines I think it was...). However, today, most grammar and spelling goes unchecked and the signatures have grown in length!Metalwario64 wrote:I remember the first year I joined I once slipped and forgot to capitalize a name, and it was marked in red when everything else was grammatically correct, so I don't know if that counts as something minor or not. Re: Are the mods being less strict with grammar?
The most effective means of keeping a forum running smoothly (I think) is for you to 1) self-moderate yourself as much as possible and 2) let the administrators moderate people who aren't you.Attitudefan wrote:Metalwario64 wrote:most grammar and spelling goes unchecked
What I'm saying is, even though the occasional spelling or grammar error may go unchecked, it's really up to the individual member to check it first. I've never considered it anyone else's job to clean up my posts. I like to make sure that they don't have to. So when I see a post that looks wonky, I don't look at it and say, "Why don't the mods do anything?"; I ask myself instead, "Why didn't the poster check his spelling?"
It's an interesting case with moderators because, while they can do everything necessary to keep the forum as it should be, they don't necessarily want to. The mods want to have fun too. Their duties as hired clean-up are secondary to the purpose we all have in being here, which is to discuss DragonBall and have fun doing it.
That wasn't anything on you in particular, Attitudefan; I just kinda felt like blabbing.

Haha, no worries Lil' Lemmy!
Actually, I try to do the same thing as you do but sometimes minor mistakes fall through the cracks. Hey, if it is bad enough, and I don't see the mistake myself, I do not mind if the mods jump in to fix something that needs it.
