This puts the bluray Advent Children Complete to shame.
Off Topic but holy shit that looks good, really puts AC to shame.. Why couldnt DBE be like this instead.. probably wouldnt do anything with the horrible story but still..

Back to topic, it would probably look horrible, cant even imagine Goku in that art style

Theyd have to really nail a refined and superspecific design scheme in order for them to render the models accurately without making them looking like ugly plastic toys, especially in the faces and how cartoony they generally are..(the CGI transition in Bog looked pretty jarring switching between too realistic to really plain...eww). the closest thing we have to what a GOOD (though high budget) CGI version of DBZ adaption would have to be from Raging Blast 2s opening. The only game opening where the models actually looked right... (Tenkaichis models looked atrocious.)

I really wish they would invest more effort into the artstyle of the 2D animations, because lately theyve just looked out0right terrible but its hard for me to say why particularly. I just dont like what they're doing now. A lot of it just lacks detail and that griddy pencil-look the older movies had at best.

Well, yeah. It's about time AC was de-throned. How long have the been king of the CG pile? 8 years?

I actually agree here. People go on about how amazing the eyecatches for Kai looks and how they want an entire Dragon Ball anime to look like that. Hell, lets extend that to movie #14. They all look so shiny and plasticy, it's really unsettling.

I always thought DBZ Tenkaichi 1 had a great looking intro done in CGI.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

It depends on which ones, most of them looked real bland with dull colours, and llittle to no detail beyond the shiny white-tinted skin... much like how they animated the Hachiyack movie.

Look at how plain the SSJ hair looks, its like one of those "traced over" line arts.

However the earlier ones were actually real good.

Going to make make a judgement call but, frankly, anyone who considers any of the PS360 Dragon Ball games (Let's throw in J Stars Victory as another take) to be good looking games isn't wholly opposed to the idea- they've run nearly the entire possible spectrum of inspirations for a CG movie at this point, as low-budget annual anime games no less! Because what is CG but better modeling? I'd be game, I see no reason why Toei couldn't surpass what Spike and Dimps have been doing the past few years- the only purely "CG" factor that would need special consideration is lighting, since Dragon Ball has almost none of it in any media.

Even thought the movie itself was a trainwreck.
It was still better then the third TMNT movie :D! TMNT '07 may be meh, but the animation looked amazing. I would like to see DBZ done in 2D for now since 2D is still well and alive in Japan while 2D is pretty much dead in film animation now these days for over a decade.
Whoa, what's the general consensus of that movie? It's my personal favorite, right behind the first film. :?

But, as far as the CG goes, I dunno. I'd definitely be interested in seeing what the series would look like if they did it in the realistic style of the Harlock film, but as said above, I'd rather a budget like that go towards 2D.

The general consensus does seem to be that most people don't like the movie, based on a TMNT forum I lurk on anyway. I honestly like it quite a bit myself. It's not perfect by any means, but I always thought the CG was actually pretty well done (especially the rain in the rooftop Leo/Raph fight), and I'd probably put it as my second favorite of the four theatrical films. But yeah, it seems like most don't really care for it.

On topic of a CG DBZ movie...I don't think an 'Advent Children' look would work (like taking out Toriyama's designs and making them more realistic looking), because at that point, why not just do an actually good live-action film. At least then there'd be ample reason for why the characters don't look exactly as they should. A CG DBZ movie period though...I dunno. I can't make a judgement on that without seeing a little bit of what it would look like, honestly. It could turn out really good or really bad.

I mean, I sure wouldn't want to watch an entire movie done in CG that looked like that one CG moment in Battle of Gods. :?

Well depends on the budget. Those Harlock trailers clearly show Toei is involved with them.

Compared to some other Toei projects, Battle of Gods has a shoestring budget. Didnt the majority of it budget come from FOX anyway? Taking that into account how much did Toei really put into the film on their own?

I don't think who contributed what really matters, so long as the total adds up to something decent; a handful of people have made claims BoG wasn't working with a lot.

True, I completely forgot that Toei is behind Harlock. ^_^; Really need to get to checking that one out.

And to clarify, I think Battle of Gods looked fine for the most part. It was really just this one moment where both Goku and Beerus were done as CG models that really looked out of place, and I can't imagine them having looked any better even if the entire film had been done in that manner. It was just really awkward CG. It does all come down to budget though, but considering how Kai was made, how likely is it really that Toei ever would give DBZ the kind of budget needed to do a quality CG film for this franchise? Not very, I would guess.

Just another reason id love to see Toei give up Dragonball to BONES, GAINAX, or Production I.G. Maybe Flying Dog, since they did Samurai Champloo and Trigun Badlands Rumble.

Flying Dog/Victor Entertainment is a distributor. Samurai Champloo is from Studio Manglobe, and all the Trigun anime is from Studio Madhouse.

Right, thanks for clearing that up.

After some thought id have to say BONES would be best suited for the task, having such animation heavyweights like FMA Brotherhood, Soul Eater, both FMA movies, and Sword of The Stranger. The talent they got for those series is just stunning.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to see DBZ given a fully CGI treatment.
The Saint Seiya CG character designs look atrocious in comparison to the manga art.

And this is from the perspective of a Saint Seiya fan!
I wouldn't mind a cel-shaded animated feature though.

Honestly, I don't see why they didn't just go with the manga designs given how detailed they were (especially since the original anime never got them right). Still, it looks better than how often Omega looked poorly animated.

As for 2D vs 3D...I'd say at this point, Toei is far superior at using 3D CG to 2D Animation. So little Toei's animated has actually looked all that good, especially in the modern era. Maybe they're just not willing to sink the money into 2D Animation needed, but that Captain Harlock trailer looked amazing. They've also been getting better at CG in recent years, likely thanks to using it on occasion for stuff their suit actors can't do in Super Sentai for the mechs.

I'm down for a CG Dragon Ball movie if done right. I've heard good things about Captain Harlock, and design arguments aside, Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary is starting to look nice...I think it can work.

The 3D Saint Seiya movie looks pretty good. If they do something to it with Dragon Ball then I will be up for it.

The question becomes "What would the movie cover?"...do they continue the Battle of Gods story with it (or do we keep that with 2D animation)?

Do we get something akin to Path of Power, in a modern take on a classic story (which is the route Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary seems to be going)?

Or, do we get something new?

Perhaps we finally get the Adventures of Pan, Mr. Satan, and Mr. Buu that Toriyama once talked about...or the start to adapting the material Toriyama made for Dragon Ball Online. Something along those lines?
