What should I buy?

Man, I never knew how much of a mess funimation made. So far it looks like the rock the dragon set is the only one I'd want to buy, but then i'd be stuck for the rest of the episodes that funimation dubbed. Why can't they just bring out the funimation dub un-edited like they did with the ocean, is that really so hard?

I don't understand this question. Starting back in 2000 with the "Captain Ginyu" single discs, every single thing FUNimation has put out on DVD/Blu-ray has been unedited in terms of video (of course, that ignores the inaccurate English dub, but it's "unedited").

The only exception is the "Rock the Dragon" set whose entire purpose is to be the edited TV version that originally aired from 1996-1998.

Additionally, I'm removing that link to a bootleg "full epz" site in your post. We do not condone that kind of material here.

I think I'm getting a bit confused in everything now, what I'm trying to say is the rock the dragon set is how I seen it as a kid. I also wanna watch the rest of the episodes as I seen them as a kid, exactly as they showed them on TV. For the rest of the episodes after the rock the dragon set, all I've seen is 16:9, removed grain, different dub etc. unless, I've miss-understood something (also sorry for the link)

Well, if you want it exactly like you saw it on TV, then that means edited for content, and that's going to be a little harder to find for all non-Rock the Dragon material, as that was only released on VHS. All DVDs of the series are completely uncut. As has been said, the original DVD singles are the closest you are going to find to that, as it is the unedited version of that. Everything since then has been altered to some degree, be it the removal of voice filters (like with Freeza and Boo), the rewriting of lines, the re-recording of lines by the same actor (Vegeta), or, in a few cases, the complete replacement of one actor with another (Ginyu, the narrator).

As several people on here mentioned, the singles are exactly what you want. The problem is that DBZ didn't come out 3 years ago. These DVDs came out from 1999-2002 and the Ultimate Uncut came out in 2005. Not really a reason to blame FUNimation that you decided to get the series on DVD 10 years after they put it out. Luckily for you, they keep coming out with releases. Yeah, they may not be what you want, but be thankful that you can get any version of it after not getting it sooner.

Eh, I'd say there'd be no reason to blame FUNimation if there had been no other releases, and these had simply gone out of print. The well dried up. The market died. Then it'd be understandable. But since FUNimation keeps putting the series out, only to keep tinkering with it and messing it up and confusing everyone who doesn't follow every little detail, then, yeah, that is a reason to blame FUNimation.

Yeah, they may not be what you want, but be thankful that you can get any version of it after not getting it sooner.

If people have legitimate problems with the company's releases, who are you to dismiss them from voicing those opinions and making the case for a better product? A new release doesn't infer "better" and it's totally OK to prefer a previously-released product. I'm definitely not OK with a DVNR-ed, cropped version on Blu-ray being the default in-print version of the series on the market. I'm going to continue to state why that is and what I think they should be doing instead.

Yes because if it goes out of print it's hard to purchase for a decent price, which happened to Dragon Box Z Vol. 2.

Was that ever proven? The US Dragon Box Z collection was shortly announced after the Orange Bricks were finishing up and this is also why the Level BDs didn't do well (people were coming to a close to owning the entire DBZ series and then bam!).

Which is what the nostalgic fans want. Aside from the DBoxes, every release in the past seven years has had three audio options. If you're going to label something a "broadcast" track, then why don't you actually include it? That's incredibly inaccurate information and also redundant since, if the fans want to listen to the redubbed work, they can choose the 5.1 track. That's what it's there for!

I think they look terrible, but my opinion is no more valid than yours. But, no, I absolutely detest this self-defeatist theory that crap must be pushed to market and supported in order to have the privilege of buying things we want. Please stop dismissing all of your power as a consumer this way. It just makes it easier for companies to take advantage of you. And they're not even taking advantage of you if you go out of your way to say you like it. It's just masochism at that point.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea where you got the impression that I only wanted them to have released it once 10 years ago. I never said that or even intimated that, so please don't put words in my mouth. Look, we gave a list of releases. Complain all you want, it is what it is. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and settle for what you have. These complaints have been talked about over and over again since 2007. It's not going anywhere. For the OP's satisfaction, the singles would be ideal. But since they are pretty hard to find for the whole series, a cheap alternative is the Season Sets or new Season Blu-rays. With the positives and the negatives, that is the situation. Complain all you want, but that's the situation.

If we sat back and accepted what we were given, we wouldn't have gotten uncut bilingual DVDs. It was a legitimate petition with an actual written-out business plan presented to FUNimation by a group willing to do the actual work with a list of beneficial financial goals.

So no, I don't buy your viewpoint for even a second. I'm not going to bend over and keep buying cropped home releases just because they're putting them out. This isn't a charity. If they want my business, they need to produce things I want.

Edit: The problem really is that there's no uncut 4x3 AR footage of the Saiyan arc and Freeza's arc, unless you're up to a bit of a mix (Level BDs + Season BDs).

I was going through Ebay and wanted to put them up for the OP, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

FYI, Casey, dboxkaifan just helped put up the best option. Otherwise there are 2 Ginyu, 2 Trunks, and 7 Ultimate Uncut. For the rest of the Saiyan and Namek arcs you can either get the old Ocean dubbed ones or Season One, unfortunately. Or Dragon Box 2, but it doesn't have the dub music and it may be one of the absurdly expensive ones.


And I'm sorry of any posts come off as rude, believe me, I don't write them that way. I don't care about FUNimation, I just feel like there's not much that can be done about it. FUNimation knows what it's doing and knows how we feel about it. It's unfortunate but that's the world we live in.
