Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
Honestly, while Clinkenbeard is by far the better actress, Nadolny's Goku does have a better "wildness" about it, while Colleen's is a bit too subdued. It's probably something that can be solved with different direction, but as much as I dislike Nadolny's Gohan, I have to say her young Goku is probably better than Clinkenbeard's.
It's not a blow out, though.

How much episodes do you think this would have if it happened?
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

If you try to do a three-chapter-per-episode deal, you might be able to get somewhere around 60-70 episodes.xmysticgohanx wrote:How much episodes do you think this would have if it happened?

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
I'd be all for it, pretty much. Not as much for the original, mostly to have a dub that's consistent with Dragon Ball Z Kai. Colleen's Goku may take getting used to, but hopefully she'd improve over time. She's only voiced him in DB Movie 1 and a few Kai flashbacks so far.
I'm still holding on to the slim hope that they'll do something about it once they finish the Buu arc of Kai (might explain why nobody's rerunning this show, even though they did so for GT). I kind of think it'd be nice to have an actual complete "Manga Cut" of the anime, you know? Because as it stands, I don't think Kai is accurate skipping over Goku's entire childhood.
I bet there would probably be a new score as well, which would be cool since Episodes 14-153 (as far as I know) have never been rescored at all. I'm always open to new interpretations, so that's why this aspect peaks my interest.
Also, having a dub that doesn't have "Gosh Dang it to Heck" would be nice, too. There were only two (and the former only sort of counts) instances of swearing in the Dragon Ball dub. Granted, it wasn't as full of narm as the lines in Dragon Ball Z, but it still leaves a serious tone to be desired.
I do wonder what they'd call it in Japan, though. Funimation could call it Dragon Ball Kai, easily.

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
It is kind of strange that Kai skipped the entire first half of the series despite claiming to be "more true" to the manga. In any case, I don't think Toei is going to bother with that, the Z portion of the series seems to be more popular in virtually every portion of the world from what I understand, and the original anime doesn't suffer from filler as badly as the "Z" anime did.

But that was just meant to serve as exposition for newcomers to the series.Naruto6583 wrote:Well they did sum up dragon ball during the first episode of kai during a flashbackWittyUsername wrote:It is kind of strange that Kai skipped the entire first half of the series despite claiming to be "more true" to the manga. Well, i would be interested if only to see how they would remaster the original Dragon Ball.
Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
To be honest, chopping down the original Dragon Ball can only help it.
There is more feet dragging and time wasting than you think.
Its nowhere near to the mind numbing level of DBZ, but its still bad at times.

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
Depends on how they did it. If they actually reanimated it from scratch and cut out all the filler, it would be around 50 episodes. However, since Toei would probably use the lazy cut-and-paste job they've been doing, I say it could be around 75-80 episodes.xmysticgohanx wrote:How much episodes do you think this would have if it happened?
Exactly! To me, the original Dragon Ball's pacing becomes intolerable after Episode 28, and even the first 28 episodes could be trimmed down quite a bit. I'd love to see the Red Ribbon Army, 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, and Piccolo Daimao arcs Kai-ified!dan2026 wrote:To be honest, chopping down the original Dragon Ball can only help it.

So from 153 episodes to 120 episodes? That isn't really much of a difference, but if it were 100 or less it'd be interesting.Naruto6583 wrote:Um 115 to 120 I thinkxmysticgohanx wrote:How much episodes do you think this would have if it happened?

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
Ok, I hope this doesn't count as necroposting, but I'll go ahead.
I'd really like to see this happen. Then we could have a full manga cut and a full extended edition. I've been thinking about how, unlike Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball hasn't been airing in reruns. I wonder if maybe this is a sign that it is in the works, perhaps. Maybe after they're done with the Buu arc the would go on to this. I wonder what they would call it, though. Dragon Ball Kai easy for the Funimation dub, but the original would have to be different. Dragon Ball Kai: Beginning or something like that.
Well, that's how it would happen in my wildest dreams, at least. It's pretty clear nobody at Toei or Funimation even cares about the first series anymore.

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
And in a way, that's a good thing can you imagine what a cropped Dragon Ball release would look like? The details are all over the place, they're not in the centre but on the bottom and top, so Toei Animation'd need to do a lot of selective cropping.Valerius Dover wrote:Well, that's how it would happen in my wildest dreams, at least. I suppose that for most shots they could be cropped but it wouldn't always be the case.
Such as this below, you couldn't crop it in a moderately decent way:

I did some quick selective cropping and it doesn't look horrible but a ton of details were lost due to the 16x9 AR crop, yeah I know that the resolution differs from each other though that's not the point here.

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
Those aren't 16:9, they're 16:6 — that's TOO cropped. You want to crop to 640x360, not 640x240.

I'm aware that they're not in the correct resolution but cropping shots from the Dragon Ball sometimes wouldn't work, unless they'd show it up in two parts.Puto wrote:Those aren't 16:9, they're 16:6 — that's TOO cropped. You want to crop to 640x360, not 640x240.

Re: "Kai-ifying" the original Dragon Ball
But every shot you've cropped incorrectly would have been serviceable had you actually used a 16:9 ratio. I don't think it strengthens your argument by exaggerating the loss.

That's a heck of a lot of extra footage you've cut off.
This isn't to say that 16:9 is a good idea or anything. I'm entirely in agreement with you. I just think setting realistic examples strengthens your argument more

^ you forgot that the 16x9 crops have more side information than the Dragon Box so the crop would have more vertical info.
