Big guys are weak and little weak looking guys are strong

Post by dbzfan7 » Thu May 01, 2014 6:23 pm

How do you feel about Toriyama's preference here. He tends to always make big bulky guys turn out to be weaklings, while the smaller less tough looking guys are actually incredibly powerful. Like Nappa to Vegeta, Freeza's final form being pretty weak looking (sans 100%), Beerus and SSJ God in itself, etc.

I for one always liked this idea to a degree. I always love when the smaller weak or adorable looking things tend to actually be really powerful and effortlessly beats up the bigger people in any medium. Like in my current rewatching of Dragon ball, everyone doubts Kid Goku, and he keeps on showing everyone up. I still laughed at his adorable smile as General White's punch did absolutely nothing.

Though the only time I haven't really liked it is with SSJ God as while Toriyama said "God is an exaggeration", I still think it doesn't even deserve the title.

But this isn't really about SSJ God, just about what you think of Toriyama's preference on Big Bulky Guys vs Smaller Weaker Looking Ones.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Honestly, it's something that's always really appealed to me for some reason. Even when Goku is a really buff guy in DBZ, he's still generally not as buff as some of his opponents (though the Z era did start to have a trend where the last form of a villain is the smallest and the most powerful/most dangerous), so just visually speaking it's all the more exciting to see him go up against larger foes and win.

And I think that's part of the reason Dragon Ball caught on, as if you look at most of the action series that came before it, things like Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, they're full of huge, hulking muscular guys doing manly things. Now, those are all fine and good (I really like JoJo's, and want to get to Fist sometime in the near future), but in a time where that was the norm, something like Dragon Ball probably turned quite a few heads.

Tenshinhan and Chaozu would like to have a word with you on this subject. So would Piccolo and Piano.

Chaozu is the most powerful character in DBZ, after his mountain training I have his power level at 62,346,743,232,474,327,326, surpassing that of Whis.

He's also a good dad too, take that!

It starts getting screwy when you throw Toei into the mix for too long. Nappa is supposed to be gigantic (and he is), not so much when stacked to Broly or Li Shenron.

Just like Dragon Ball since Chapter #4.

I really like this about kid Gokû (and kid Kuririn). It's how cool it looks along with how shocked the big bad guys always are. X3

It was also really neat with kid Pan at the end of the manga at the tournament.
On hiatus.

I've seen body builders in my gym. Some guys have size, but can lift the same weight as some of the bigger dudes. Bigger is never necessarily stronger.

As would Super Buu and his other forms, and Dabra and Babidi, and Android 16 and the other androids.

Anyway, I'd say King Cold and Freeza are probably the most extreme example of "bigger =/= stronger":

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

It's like people thinking: Expensive = better (as is the case for overpriced items from Apple and Beats) which is not really always the case.

A guy can have pretty damn big muscles but that alone doesn't mean he's better than someone else who's slim, it comes down to their fighting style and technique more or less. I've never been interested being a muscular guy 'cause it wouldn't fit me nor would I want it.

In Dragon Ball you have down to earth battles which consist of dudes using their raw strength rather than beams and what have you in Dragon Ball Z.

I love it. Just proves once again that looks don't mean anything.
