Is Toei Animation the worst animation company ever?
Re: Is Toei Animation the worst animation company ever?
The CG films are getting such large budgets because Toei Animation is deluding itself into thinking it will someday be an international powerhouse like DreamWorks and Disney. The only way to do half-way decent CG is to spend millions of dollars, so its no surprise that they have such large budgets. For the thirty million spent on the CG Space Captain Harlock Toei could have made Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods ten-times as long.

I think back in the early 80s, they were producing some high grade looking shows compared to what was produced in comparison (and we are talking about weekly serialized shows, not films, or high budget one offs). Look at Dragonball compared to Lupin the 3rd part 3, or Xambungle, or many other early 80s produced content that was fairly popular in Japan. For 1984, for a weekly produced show that will run for a decade, it looks really good and has aged well considering the circumstances. When looking at the Maeda team episodes especially, it looks fantastic. Toei did well for Dragonball, considering how long it became and how it never dwindled in quality.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Are you fucking kidding me? You're getting your panties in a bunch over such inconsequential nonsense?VegettoEX wrote: Beyond being incredibly rude, this is simply not an appropriate response.
You need to either leave context and an explanation in your post, or you need to keep your thoughts to yourself. Why do you disagree? What do you feel is "bad" about the animation? Do you have familiarity with what the person above you is explaining?
Holy shit dude. Lighten up.

As a long time member of this board I like seeing others receive rude, horrifically generic "lol no" responses just as much as I like receiving them myself, which is to say, not at all. If the moderation team isn't going to call out such nonsense how can the other folks in the community? We're here for Dragon Ball, not to look down on our neighbors.Vice wrote:Are you fucking kidding me? You're getting your panties in a bunch over such inconsequential nonsense?

Bonus points for replying NEARLY A WEEK LATER.
And, more on topic, Attitudefan is spot on in his assessment. Toei's animators frequently did that extra bit more than the other studios back in the '80s, even in their work for American studios. I think that's why it stings so much to see a lower-budget project like Kai turn out so poorly, because we're used to Toei having a high standard at all times.

Been out of town and unfortunately only just now able to review / respond to what's been noted. Thankfully, the community self-polices and offers up perfectly find explanations in the interim.
If anyone has a massive issue with the way this community is run, they can simply not participate. There are a set of rules that are explicitly outlined and must be agreed to - twice - prior to registration.
There is no slippery-slope allowed and basically zero-tolerance. If you are interested in being a rude, antagonistic, toxic member, you will be given the same opportunities/chances/allowances as anyone else, but will ultimately have strikes issued against your account, leading to temporary and permanent bans from the entirety of the website (pages/guides, podcast, forum, etc.).
We have zero interest in so embarrassingly taking things to such a level, so if you can just chill and be an awesome contributing member, there's no problem here.
Again, I repeat: if you have a massive problem with this, you can simply choose not to participate here by either not registering in the first place, or no longer using your account.
