I think it would be awesome if Akira Toriyama continues with Uub since all the other dbz characters are starting to get old. I think it would be awesome making him stronger and make Goku as his master and a brand new story

Uh, yeah really. Cuz without some further explanation, it...almost sounds like you're saying a black character can't have potential...surely that's not what you mean, so I thought you'd like to clarify.hulkty wrote:Really........... -__-'Gyt Kaliba wrote:...Uh...care to elaborate on what the heck you're trying to say here?hulkty wrote:Potential.
Black guy.

I think he is saying that the two traits of Uub that appeal to people is that he is black(?) and has potential.

That's what I had thought at first, but now I see that "pick one" probably meant you could only have one of those two things.Kid Buu wrote:I think he is saying that the two traits of Uub that appeal to people is that he is black(?) and has potential.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
I don't even pay attention to stuff like that. like when I seen Mr. Popo for the first time I never noticed he was black in that sense. he was just Mr. Popo lol I don't see Oob being black as a reason for people to gravitate towards him. but I would like an explanation of what he was getting at because when I first read it I didn't say anything because I didn't want to see some stupid race thing start hahaKid Buu wrote:I think he is saying that the two traits of Uub that appeal to people is that he is black(?) and has potential.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Uub looks more Indian than black imo. Black people generally don't have straightened spiky hair... well males anyway...

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

People always say the Namekians are, so maybe we got em lol. But maybe more human or Saiyan characters that were black. In my head Canon..... Turles was black Goku... one of my little things that make me happy.FortuneSSJ wrote:We need more black people in the series!

Lmao, I always think of this clip when talking about black characters in anime. They either rap, are very angry, or can't speak properly... I think Naruto (except Killer Bee) and maybe Bleach have exceptions.ParkerAL wrote:Japan is so good at portraying them in a balanced, thoughtful manner.FortuneSSJ wrote:We need more black people in the series!

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
I haven't seen that in a while, gotta rewatch at some point. Yeah, we get bad rap in anime. No love... Dutch from Black Lagoon is probably my favorit black anime character. And if not him, Piccolo.... there, I said it.TheGmGoken wrote:Don't forget Gurren Lagann. The sprial King.
Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
Is Oob supposed to be 'black' (I'm not sure how PC that term even is these days
)? I always thought he was of a native american/red Indian equivalent ethnicity. Looking at his design he doesn't seem to have any of the physical traits Toriyama attributed to black characters during the manga, though that might be because Oob was introduced at the end of its run and at a time where political correctness would've been more prominent.

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
Exactly. All Toriyama's black characters had exaggerated lips... (not including General Black's redesign). First time I saw Uub I thought of Namu from Dragon Ball. All of his "indian" characters were poor, brown, and had ribs showing (well except Namu).

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
I don't think Oob was black could be wrong on that...but it does make me happy that Native Americans are in Dragonball considering we had lots! in my family. shawnee to be exact.Sin wrote:Is Oob supposed to be 'black' (I'm not sure how PC that term even is these days)? but I just thought Oob was black? he looks it anyways...but regardless I would have liked to seen him be earth's protector.

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
Oob is black or maybe African. In terms of DB. He's dark skinned.
Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
Admittedly, in GT his skin (rather like many other characters) is pretty dark, but in EoZ he really isn't any darker than the other desert folk in the series. I'm sure there must be some clarification on this somewhere, but do you think it'd affect his fanbase, as I'm sure there are many others who share the opinion that he is black.TheGmGoken wrote:Oob is black or maybe African. Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
What do you mean ''affect his fan base?'' Are you saying fans that are black just like him because...well he's black? I dunno. I like him a-lot and I'm not black. but I guess some may like him for that reason. I like the natives in Dragonball because of my family history. So it's definitely possible. My friends(who are black) like Afro Samurai(as do I but not because he's black) but they like him because he's black. also I'm not trying to offend anyone when I say Black. I know some may take offence to that and if you do I apologize.

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
I'm not saying that exactly, I know this is probably a sensitive subject for some but it really doesn't need to be. It's just that, as you have said, there are people who do make that connection and become fans of a character they can relate to both mentally and aesthetically. There is nothing at all wrong with it, and I too hope I'm not stepping over some line by stating this. I think we should be able to discuss things like this, because avoiding them is what causes a stigma.samuraix123 wrote:What do you mean ''affect his fan base?'' It, of course, would not be the only reason they like him.

Re: Why do people like the character Oob?
Yeah I agree. I'm curious though...Would it have worked making Oob the new hero of Dragonball? I can't remember GT too much because it's been a while. but could he even defeat Freeza at his best? or would it have worked out like the whole future trunks thing. We don't know what's going on in his timeline we just hope for the best and it leaves his story to our imaginations?
