What you really like or don't like about Super Dragonball Z

You know, I once read that Street Fighter was inspired one way or another by DBZ. I don't know how true that is, but I believe I heard it from a reliable source. To me Super DBZ brings it full circle.
And for the record I think the best fighting games I ever played were Street Fighter III, Capcom vs SNK2 and Marvel vs Capcom 2. So a DBZ game with SF elements gets a huge thumbs up from me

I just got the game and I'm really disappointed. It was really hyped up by everyone and anyone that is familiar with dragonball but in the end I saw it as meh. I think the only reason I got it was because it was a dragonball game. Ask yourself this: would you still like it if it wasn't a dragonball game..?By the way, it really isn't comparable to Street Fighter. If you haven't tried it, rent it first instead of buying it.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

If I could just add something else. The music in this game is very bland. I prefer to keep the music muted and listen to the Budokai soundtrack on my mp3 player. If someone had shown me the game before release, I wouldn't have minded if they'd used the Budoaki music again for the fifth time.
Also, there were no English dub voices for the UK version. Very disappointing. What was the point of having them for the US only and Japanese voices for Europe? Why not just put both on there?
Mike, I can totally understand where you're coming from in terms of 'classic' beat 'em ups, but a lot of us (myself included) are more likely 'DBZ' game fans than 'fighting game' fans. It's nice to see something different from the Budokai games, but I just can't get into it as much.

That kind of opinion isn't the problem, thoughKula wrote:Mike, I can totally understand where you're coming from in terms of 'classic' beat 'em ups, but a lot of us (myself included) are more likely 'DBZ' game fans than 'fighting game' fans. It's the people that are like, "This game sucks, I can't press PPPPE and win, and I have no idea what a fireball motion is!" that irritate the living begeezus out of me.

I hope you're not referring to me. I have no problem with other people liking SDBZ, it's just not my cup of tea.VegettoEX wrote:That kind of opinion isn't the problem, though. You seem totally fine with something "different" coming out, and even if you don't like it, you can understand the school of thought it represents and where someone's coming from. That's all someone like me is asking.

What pisses me off is those people saying things like "leave the fighting games to the grown-ups", like I'm somehow retarded for not liking SDBZ.

No, I'm not referring to anyone in particular. Don't worryRocketman wrote:I hope you're not referring to me. I have no problem with other people liking SDBZ, it's just not my cup of tea.

I'd say that when it applies to people who don't understand how to play and don't want to learn how to play a fighting game with roots in the old style. There's a different between not WANTING to and being totally whiney and close-minded... and wanting to but just not feeling it.Rocketman wrote:What pisses me off is those people saying things like "leave the fighting games to the grown-ups", like I'm somehow retarded for not liking SDBZ.

I would like to point you in the direction of this thread. Thanks.

That's what I think when people comment on this game, becuase they did not bother to learn the mechanics of the game and how an arcade style fighting game works. They thought this would be some easy to play crap like the Dragonball Z Budakai series(well it's not crap but it certainly is not a true fighter) were you can win by just hitting 2 buttons.VegettoEX wrote:No, I'm not referring to anyone in particular. In Powerstone, there is a character who could turn SSJ-like and could even form a Genki Dama. Great game that owerstone.Anonymous Friend wrote:This actually kinda reminded me of a Capcom fighting game called Power Stone that I had on the Dreamcast, which inturn reminded me of Dragonball Z.
Does anyone happen to know when the arcade version of this game was released?
Now on to Super DBZ. For me, it wasn't flashy enough . B3 and Sparking may not have a fighting system but thy delivered the DBZ feeling, especially Sparking. I missed that in Super DBZ. It isn't a bad thing thing, but what people mean with it's Street Fighter is that it doesn't feel as much as an epic DBZ fight, but more like a SF fight.
Furthermore, the SSJ transformations are pathetic. (They last about 10 seconds, while it's an integral part of the series. (They could put SSJ as a Skill in stead of attack up in the skill tree)
The Graphics, while based upon the manga looked pale. Now this may be intended but some backgrounds looked like ps1 graphics.
The roster size isn't something to pick on, but the choises of characters are. When you have 15 spots, don't clone Vegeta and Piccolo with slightly different move sets. Gohan with sword is nice as a gimmick, but not more than that. He isn't that good in the game and I'm in the majority when I say that most people would rather play as Ultimate Gohan.
However, the destructable environments were awesome.
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

I very much like the game & I played it more frequently the first week I got it, but now it's just lying there in my collection. I have the most fun with it while playing with others. All in All, it's good game, it's just not good enough to go back & play it like Dragon Ball Z 3. It lacks single player replay value & the replay value of previous games.

I am with VegettoEX and Duo on this. The depth to the battle engine in Super Dragonball Z is far superior to any other Dragonball Z fighter. I enjoy it more than Budokai 3 now, and that is saying something.
Rocketman said others have called him basically a dumb kid for not liking it. Those people are correct in the sense that older gamers that are both fans of classic fighting games and Dragonball will take to the game and appreciate it for what it is more than younger games, but they are DEAD WRONG in claiming a lack of intelligence or any other factor would determine a lack of interest in Super Dragonball Z. It is a piss poor decision to slam someone like that, and I am sorry that some elitist jerk said that to you Rocketman.
What someone like VegettoEX, Duo or myself should do is take our understanding of the game and show others the shinning aspects of the game. I introduced it to my two younger cousins. One is 15 and the other is 13. At first, they wanted to stop playing it and go back to Budokai 3, but I insisted we stay with it for awhile. They started to get the hang of the gameplay mechanics, and being that they are kids, they found moves and combos I had never thought of. Together, we enchanced the experience for each other. Younger gamers are not as set in thier ways as us older gamers and have the unique ability to figure out stuff that us older gamers wouldn't try because we are used to certain things in games and don't try certain things because we assume right off it won't or can't work a certain way. Never forget that you posess such a skill, younger crowd. it is something I wish I was still capable of to the extent that you all are.
Super Dragonball Z allows for true matches of skill and mastery of a fighting engine, whereas Budokai 3 allows the underdog to always come back if they can successfully pull off a complete Dragon Rush or Ultimate Move. Sparking Dragonball Z is at the bottom of my own list of Dragonball Z games that I enjoy because all it amounts to in two player is who can charge up and blast the other player the fastest. I dislike that game, because it lost all its enjoyment after completing the single player modes.
Super Dragonball Z is something different. I enjoy it on so many levels that the other titles just can't offer. Play it with others and after awhile you will find it has the greatest depth overall and allows for the most even matches and unique playing styles to shine.
Those are my thoughts on this subject..

I don't actually think theres anything in Super Dragonball Z I don't enjoy..
I love everything on the game, the battle system, the music (God its awesome), the designs (Oh the designs!).
I wouldn't have minded Head-Cha-La! (2005) for an intro though, I mean, we got the Japanese voices, whats the point in replacing a good intro song with a crap one?
The game would have felt much more complete for me, and would have made me smile every time I put the game on.

To be honest theres nothing I hate about the game in terms of characters, controls, gameplay, graphics etc
The only thing I really dislike are that some of the attacks are incorrectly colored. Such as the Masenko being blue when its meant to be yellow, the Genki Dama being yellow when its meant to be blue, Vegeta's Final Flash being Fuschia/Pinkish Purple when its meant to be yellow! But thats only because I've gotten use to the colors that are shown in the anime and when its shown differently it fustrates me.
The other thing I dislike is Gohan (Cell Arc) not having an alternate outfit. Yes he has alternate colors but not an outfit, which to me is kinda sad since Goku has an alternate outfit and so do Chi Chi and Vegeta. So why not Gohan? Why does my favorite character have to miss out? I mean through out the series he was shown in many different clothes, so why is it so hard to give him a couple of them in the game?
I think a really good alternate outfit for him would be the one he wore in Movie Nine.
But oh well nothing I can really do. Overall the games great and I love it!
