Dragon Ball Z: Best of Goku DVD Dissection!

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Tue Oct 21, 2014 10:40 am

Before I get into this, if you don't know what this is, let me explain.Sometime back in June of 2013, Walmart put up listings for a "Best of Goku" and "Best of Vegeta" DVD on their website. Then a little later that same month, FUNimation put out a survey asking fans what their favorite Goku and Vegeta fights were. They said flat out that this was for a "Best of" DVD release, so there was really no confusion about why they were asking these questions. Everything seemed good to go. But then the listing was taken down, so we all figured they were cancelled. A year goes by and everyone forgets about them. Then out of no where, some guy puts a video on YouTube showing off this DVD! As it turns out (or as it seems right now), just the Goku "Best of" DVD was released, and it looks like it's an in-store-only thing. So of course, I had to buy this and show you what this release is all about! (Spoiler Alert: it's about nothing good.)

Image

The back of the box actually mentions that these fights were voted for by the fans. Also if anyone was wondering about the regions, it's listed as 1, 2, and 4.

Image

The disc art...

Image

Main Menu Screen - It's nice, I guess. It has the same art as the cover, so... ::shrugs:: Also, the music that plays during the menu is that same music they used for the Orange Brick trailers. You know the one I'm talking about!

Image

Episode Menu Screen - Why? Why are the episodes out of order? Why would they arrange the episodes like this?! I guess if they were doing it by what was the most popular? But they don't have any indication of if that first episode listed is the most popular, or if it's like a countdown and the last episode is the most popular. I... I don't know, man...

Image

Setup Menu Screen - To be honest, I was surprised to see this option. I was pretty convinced this was gonna be dub only. And if you're wondering, the title cards and credits are English no matter what language you select.

Image

Trailer Menu Screen - They're just trailers. I... I don't know how to expand on that...

Image

This is a pretty bare bones release. I wasn't really expecting much anyway. Hell, I wasn't even expecting full episodes with Japanese and English audio tracks! I guess if you find this in Walmart for $7.00 it's not a bad deal. I just wish these episodes weren't Orange Brick transfers. The "Best of Vegeta" is no where to be seen right now, I don't know if they're releasing it later, or if they just decided to go with the Goku one. I mean, I could totally see FUNimation starting a "Best of" line with the other characters too. They could release a DVD for Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks... Yamcha's DVD would be blank...

I would have bought one of these just to lay up somewhere but you said ''Orange Brick transfers'' and that just about ended that. :P I try to stay as far away from that release as possible. I don't like seeing animation deleted on screen. Heck, I gave all the orange bricks that I bought and paid for(idk how much of a loss I took? but I bought them when they were being released.) to my brother. lol took a loss and liked it. I do like the cover art though.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

So it's really nothing special, just a bunch of top 10 episodes from DBZ with Orange Brick quality to top it off.. meh.

But nevertheless thanks for the pics and info, Kuribo! :)

But you've been buying all the Seasons on Blu-ray so wouldn't that be hypocrite of you to be saying it? I'm not trying to be rude but if you didn't really want animation cropped outta the screen you'd go with the Singles or Dragon Box Z (or the Kai sets).

Not hypocritical at all. I don't mind the colors of the new Blu-ray season sets(or the colors really on the orange bricks) I also didn't mind the orange bricks being cropped as well as the new Blu-rays(Even though I wish it was in 4x3 nothing I can do) one of the biggest complaints I had about the orange bricks overall! was animation getting deleted. I hated seeing images scrambled.

Edit - I own the Dragon-boxes :P

Even with the new Season BDs the animation still gets cropped out, although it seems that sometimes they made somewhat of an effort to improve over the OBs. Yeah, I read you've got the Dragon Boxes Z but IIRC it's not all of them.

By the way, what's the size of the disc (a DVD5 or a DVD9), OP?

You do recall greatly then :P because I only have 1,3,5,6 & 7 haha and I'm happy with them. :) and yeah I agree with ya. it sucks that the overall animation itself is cropped. But I'd rather have that then the animation getting scrambled like

Holy Crap! I just went to Google images just for a small example and ended up getting a link from Tanooki Kuribo! :P

This is like a demo for the fights.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

The only market I see for this is people who only sort of remember Dragon Ball Z fondly from their childhoods and want to re-experience a taste of it without investing in the entire series.

I was going to be upset if the "No More Rules" episode didn't make it in.

They should do one of these for all the main characters.

They have one for Vegeta but I've never seen it before.
It was released October 13,2013
Same time as the Goku version.

Talk about a waste of quality cover art. Even though I never plan on actually owning the Seasons Blu Rays, I theoretically would have preferred them with these covers.

Also, why not include some original Dragon Ball episodes? Goku had plenty of amazing moments back then. It would also give them more material to work with for a Best of Yamcha set. :D

While it'd most likely be rated 13+, a Master Roshi set would be hilarious! Filled with "pafu-pafu" moments and perversions leading to smacks upside the head from the female characters. Though, it'd be better in the format of a long montage rather than separate episodes :P

Damn it, Tanooki! You beat me to it. I got all the screenshots ready and everything for me to post about it until I saw your post from YESTERDAY, lol. Anyway, it seems that the Best of Goku DVD actually seems to be JUST coming out. I bought this Saturday or Sunday morning at my local Walmart for $5. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to find the Vegeta one but I don't think it came out yet. So, here are my two cents:

- Love the cover art.
- I was super surprised that it didn't have the English music track as an option, since this seems to be marketed toward the fans who grew up with that version.
- It does seems to be a countdown to the best episode, since the episodes are in such a weird order.
- I'm glad to see that it does have the Japanese version in it as well. I think we live in a day and age where this is a bare minimum for any anime, even if it is a bargain DVD.
- Speaking of bargain DVD's, I'm happy to see that FUNimation has put this out for people who would like a demo of the series, or for people who want a small collection of episodes they may deem the best episodes. I, for one, picked this up for that reason, even if they aren't THE best.
- Can't wait for Vegeta's DVD.
- Here is a screenshot of the "cover picture" from my Mac's DVD player that it provided me with when I pressed "stop" on the player.
- DVD Credits if anyone is interested.
- Spine art of the DVD.
- Last but least, just a little screenshot showing that it is indeed the cropped Orange Brick footage, (no big shock there).

(Also, hey I'm back? It's been forever since I've posted on the forums!)

Such a shame that FUNimation puts most of their best efforts into projects which get cancelled and then those that survive will have crappy artwork.

I'd have preferred the Kai Blu-rays to have more artwork towards its front cover and the spine but what we got instead was something pretty blank and clean.

This uses the same art as one of the sides of the Orange Brick complete collection.
