One thing I should point out. As far as I'm aware, this is the first time in a Funimation Dragon Ball dub that there have been alterations (not their fault, of course) in the actual Japanese language track's music. I wonder why this change was made.

I actually think some sound effects from the dub appeared on the japanese language track in one of the old Funimation movie dub o.OValerius Dover wrote:One thing I should point out. Received and watched the Blu-Ray today. Not sure if it was my imagination, but the audio didn't seem as strong as on the Japanese Blu-Ray. Was also interested by the fact that they used different manga panels during the end credits.
As for my first time viewing the extended edition, two scenes stood out for me. One was Goku realising it was Bulma's birthday (I thought he didn't go because he wanted to train instead) and Vegeta somewhat confiding in Kuririn.

Eh, I'd say "Don't enjoy destroying things!" sounds rather super-hero-ish too. And for what it's worth, I'd say if you're gonna complain about Superman-Goku making it into this movie, I'd rather point to the climax. Beerus sends a massive fireball towards Goku...nhienphan2808 wrote:And what's with Goku's "I I won't let you destroy my world" in stead of "Don't destroy af if it's entertainment!" I thought they has gotten closer to original with Kai and all but seems their still traces of Super Man Goku.
Japanese: "I can stop it!"
English: "I can't let that blast hit the earth!"
And then later...
Japanese: "The biggest problem is... that there's still a huge gap in strength between us!"
English: "This energy-blast... It's gonna do major damage and I can't stop it! You're too strong!"
Or in other words, Japanese Goku is only concerned with the fact that he's losing the fight, whereas English Goku is more concerned with the threat of the planet blowing up. Which is still fair enough, it's not like Goku is completely heartless, but it is a distinct change in his attitude for this particular moment.

I think (Not too sure) that if you watch the creditless ending, or the original cut of the film, then it's the same manga panels as before. The changed panels may have just been for the Extended cut.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
Finally watched Battle of Gods (uncut I suppose). Remind me, what was the purpose of this movie? Bringing old fans back? The only thing it accomplished was reminding me that I'm not the same girl that used to watch Dragon Ball.
I really didn't plan to do this- apart from my creatively edited copy of 8th I've never enjoyed any of the DBZ movies. The best ones were those I wasn't ashamed to watch, the worst, well... For last year my DBZ collection was gathering dust, I stopped checking Kanzenshuu and when a friend of mine told me that there is a new film and he has a copy I didn't even bother to check the name, so I can watch it with clear mind.
The first impression wasn't good- after Boo Saga? Dammit, Kaioshin and pink jello. Maybe I make some tea... I poured water and come back to see what happens before it boils. When I come back the water was barely warm. That movie made me forget about my tea. Just that can stand for a whole review.
I don't know why it happened. Objectively it wasn't anything on par with best animated movies I've seen. Fr hour and a half I was again a little girl who couldn't be moved from her place by any force.
First pro-Beerus (it it ortographic guide for dyslectic foreigners?). One of the best villains the whole franchise have ever seen. For starters he is quite pleasant to look at- not grotesque, cat-like enough to provide some comedy but maintaining dignity. His character? Cat. Not malicious, but extremely selfish, prone to mood swings but opened to negotiations. Something really fresh. Whis I suppose was an attempt to cash-in everlasting "bishouen jump syndrome". And he loves eating but can't sing
Sold.
I don't know how to call it, but BOG nailed everything that was the essence of DBZ for me- that specific atmosphere of danger and silliness. Even if plot was quite predictable it didn't insult my intelligence or anything like that.
And I must admit that I even shed a tear. During Vegeta's musical number we both realised how far he has gone from denying any affection to humiliating himself for the sake of his new home. And his reaction to Beerus hitting Bulma was a perfect female fan bait.
Graphic- probably the best of all movies.
Now a grain of salt- Saiyan God was a bit anti-climatic, retconing Vegeta's explosion cheapened Frieza for me (pity) and I didn't like kid Vegeta design.
That was me, the one who used to nitpick, search for every plot hole and complain for everything. I'm not the same girl, indeed.

Hmm? What retcon of planet Vegeta's explosion? The only actual change was the year it exploded (because of Jaco retconning the Bardock special in Toriyama's mind apparently), but Freeza still blew it up and did so of his own volition.Eire wrote:Now a grain of salt- Saiyan God was a bit anti-climatic, retconing Vegeta's explosion cheapened Freeza for me (pity) and I didn't like kid Vegeta design.

Didn't Beerus "ordered" him to do so?

It's ambigous. Beers could just as well be disappointed that Freeza hadn't done it yet, because he expected him to, not because he personally met Freeza and ordered him to it.Eire wrote:Didn't Beerus "ordered" him to do so?

One thing that surprised me was that the Japanese track plays the English version of FLOW's "Hero". Is there any way to listen to the original Japanese version? I'm surprised they'd put the dubbed version in the sub track. A little odd.
Watch the pre-roll message that pops up when you play the disc. It explains that, due to licensing restrictions, they couldn't include it.

Since the retcon involves Jaco, it should probably be pointed out that there's nothing about Beerus ordering Freeza to do it in DB-. It's basically just the same as the Bardock TV special, where he fears the Saiyans and the appearance of a Super Saiyan (and God for some pointless reason), so he decides to get rid of them.dbgtFO wrote:It's ambiguous. I don't know if this has been brought up but the movie was the 10th best selling DVD/Blu Ray last week.

2 questions:
1) Do the Kais have "God Ki"?
2) Can someone with God ki, sense someone else with God ki? I'm wondering if the kais had an accurate idea of exactly how strong Beerus was.

There's this really cool interview with Sabat and Schemmel from NYCC. A lot of nice tidbits and insight on the blu-ray as well. Like how Schemmel came up with his super saiyan god form voice.

1) Its possible. Remember back then when Piccolo was scared of Kaioshin in the tournament?! Maybe respect was not the only thing that made him give up.White Oni wrote:2 questions:

2) I guess so. When Goku became a God, they couldn't sense Goku's ki anymore. But seems like he could track down Beerus. Wouldn't make sense otherwise.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I hate to bump this thread off the second page (Man, I'm surprised it's here already...it must have been awhile since I last logged in) but I just wanted to post up this video review of it.

He gives a pretty good review, as seen through the eyes of a dubbie who grew up with the series. Definitely worth a look.

Well, I went to my first con ever this weekend, Izumicon. Bought Battle of Gods at the con and got Chris Sabat to sign it (along with Dragon Box 2 and Kai Part 2). Awesome experience, and it was great to finally watch the extended cut and special features.
