Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
Was ever a period of time in Japan that a Dragonball mania -like the famous pokemon one- happened in Japan?
And if yes when? When tthe series was at it's peak in the 90s? Or during the "revitilalization era" of the 00s? Or something like this never actually happened in Japan?

Well, they just gave Goku an official holiday. Does that qualify as "Dragon Ball Mania?"Periskir wrote:Was ever a period of time in Japan that a Dragonball mania -like the famous pokemon one- happened in Japan?

We're like in the middle of the Dragon Ball renaissance right now.
Re: Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
I hope this renaissance won't decline soon...
Re: Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
At this point, Dragon Ball is timeless. The franchise went through it's ups and downs, but despite anything, it will always have dedicated group of fans.

Re: Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
Dragon Ball after 1997 seem to die out a bit until around 2002 where Toei would be releasing the entire DBZ TV series to DVD and the release of Kanzenban was also release around a similar time. The resurgence of Dragon Ball seem to happen in Japan around 2002 and helping the start of the modern era of Dragon Ball in Japan that we know today. 2008 also give us Goku and his Friends Return the first Dragon Ball animated feature that we got since Heroes Legacy back in 1997 and that help give us stuff like Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans '010, Episode of Bardock, Battle of Gods and Revival of F. In America, it seems like DBZ is starting to become more mainstream again after over a decade later. It seems like Battle of Gods and Kai on Toonami help spark people interest on the franchise again after over 10 years later when DBZ ended in 2003. I even remember my mom was like "DBZ?! That's a name that I haven't heard in a while". Even the names for Super blew up everywhere on the Internet and even show up in local news paper. Not to mention May 9th even became Goku day.

I don't see us going to another dark age of DBZ again unless Super bombs big time. I think Super will be a big hit given how well Battle of Gods, and Revival of F did over there. Not to mention younger kids still like the series given how well toyetic stuff like Heroes is doing.

Dragon Ball Merchandise was at an all-time high (or at least a high) in 2007 I think.
For some reason the merchandise reduced slowly overtime as Kai and hit an all-time low in 2011 apparently.
I wonder where it is now?

Kai had great ratings on TV so it's not to blame for the sales reduction however the reason sales went down was because the products they were putting out were mediocre at best unlike now.StrawHatPatriot wrote:

Based on Bandai's last report it's doing really good.

Re: Any sign of Dragonball mania in Japan??
Well let's see... A new movie was just released that's doing very well in theaters, a new anime series has been announced, two Dragon Ball console video games were released in the past year that are selling well and a third one is on the way, there are several mobile games, there's three arcade games, a Dragon Ball science exhibit is going on, and there will soon be four on-going Dragon Ball mangas (SD, Victory Mission, Super, and Discross), so I'd say yes, Dragon Ball mania is in full swing right now.
