If you took the nostalgia out, would you still like DB?

Post by MarCas92 » Mon May 18, 2015 5:56 am

Just a question I think is worth asking yourself.

Personally for me? Yes.

I mean, I wouldn't be the mega fan I am today, but I would definitely give it a watch and read just for the influence it's had on the industry as a whole. The only thing I could see myself maybe disliking is the original Z anime, due to the unforgivable amount of filler.

Not really. Everytime I read or watch the series again I like it less and less each time.

Still interested in the new material though, so I keep around.

I got into DB 5 years ago, as a teenager, so there never really was any nostalgia factor for me.

Without knowing any of the story? Hell yeah! I remember those times when I didn't know everything that was gonna happen (I did know like half of it) and man was I pumped up to see DBZ on TV after school (had it recorded during the day because it aired in the middle of the day on a French TV) And now with Super, I'm feeling like a kid again§

No nostalgia factor for me either because I watched it back in 2007 after it had already ended.

It was also my first anime and the one to get me into the whole anime/manga thing. Now had I watched Naruto or One Piece first, if I'd have taken so much to DBZ then who knows.

If you're reading something over and over you're bound to get bored of it.

If you take the nostalgia out, you get current me. I hold little to no nostalgic value towards the series.

And do you still like DB?

Anyways I do. It's shonen at its finest-there's nothing absolutely terrible about the story, the action is great, the adventure aspects is well written, and if you look at the whole series at once, it outweighs any negatives that can be heaped on it.

Absolutely. The nostalgia for me is watching the Ocean Dub back in the day. Coming home from school every night and sitting myself down right in front of the TV ready for it. Each day, anticipating the next episode. For the short time my friends watched DB, discussing what was going to happen with them and being so excited about it. Those memories are valuable ones to me, but the truth is I'm just as big a fan now as I ever have been, and that's not linked with nostalgia. I love the story. The perfect balance it strikes between the comedic, fun side and the action side.

It's hard to describe really. It's just always been my favourite series and it's difficult to see that ever changing now.

Yes and no. I have a lot of nostalgia for the series in general; I'm also now primarily a fan of the japanese version, which is not the version I have nostalgia for.

I definitely would...maybe not as much.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Oh, definitely. Dragon Ball's brand of shounen silliness is the kind of thing I dig even as an adult. Even if I'm not sure the current me could sit through nearly 300 episodes of ancient animation and filler of an anime I don't have an emotional investment in already, I would definitely still enjoy the manga and Kai a lot. In that regard, I'm happy I got to watch the entirety of DBZ when I had the time and patience for it, Kai seems like such a half-assed effort in comparison...

If I'm nostalgic for anything about Dragon Ball, it's Z's Hebrew dub. I kinda love it, warts and all, but take the nostalgia away and I'd probably find it all unwatchable.

Nostalgia for me would be watching the anime (portuguese Dub). But I don't really like the anime anymore.

I read the manga about 7 years ago (I was already an adult at the time) and I liked it very much, much more than I like the anime (portuguese dub). I'm not blind to its flaws, but I still love even without nostalgia.

Not being a pessimistic but the Portuguese dub for the most part really is utter shit though the dub of Dragon Ball: Path to Power was definitely good imo, I'd dare to say even better than the GT dub was. Also, besides that I quite liked that on the GT dub Goku (as per the dub it was Songoku) referred to Majin Boo as Majin Boo not "Bubu".

It's a shame that Kai 1.0 / BoG was never dubbed in Portuguese but considering most of the anime dubs in PT are mediocre then it's for the best that it doesn't exist.

Probably not as much, no. Rewatching Z, both in the original way I saw it as a child (Ocean Cast - Funimation Cast), as well as the original dub, I don't enjoy it as much as I used to. As an adult, I can see more and more of the inconsistencies, lame jokes, and plot lines stretched out too long (one of the reasons why I gave up on One Piece). I haven't seen DB in its entirety until fairly recently, so there's no real nostalgia guiding my opinions toward it. Had I watched both for the first time now, I might actually prefer DB to Z, but I'd still like both.

No nostalgia, I never left. ^^;
I almost left to retire in early '12, but then they announced BOG and so...here I am.

I think I'd still enjoy the series if I started now. The characters are what kept me interested after all.
