This^ Plus, DBZ hasn't even shown the slightest bit of affection between the straight couples. I always wanted to see Goku & Chi Chi kiss or Vegeta & Bulma hug. The closest you're gonna get is Freeza. Freeza is androgynous. His gender is still debated among me and my friends.Basaku wrote:I think you need few more lessons how to make your bait topics seem more genuine and yes, I saw the previous one you posted a couple of hours ago.shonenhikada wrote:What u guys think ?

Why would a franchise as popular and successful as DB need to pull a gimmick like this ?

Well, first off, being "badass" is no indication of someone's sexuality. Second, I don't think FUNimation's redub has anything to do with it. Most people who think Zarbon's gay seem to think he is because of his appearance.shonenhikada wrote:People think Zarbon is gay because of funi dub.Gaffer Tape wrote: What does that have to do with whether or not he is gay?

Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
I dunno about that. I'm pretty sure it was the funimation voice. He looks like a pretty boy, but not something I'd say homosexual. His voice however in the funimation dub was so flamboyant it gave this impression to a lot of people. Freeza did the same thing. His voice in the funimation dub for years had me flip flop if he's a man or woman, even though I knew the answer. You have an idea of the reception between fans across the world? I only have an idea around my area, and it was usually the voices that made us confused. Though we did back then think it's weird that Freeza seemingly had lipstick, when he didn't.Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, first off, being "badass" is no indication of someone's sexuality. No, he really isn't. I could clearly tell from when I first saw Freeza that he was a male.swimtrunks wrote:Freeza is androgynous.

FUNimation's voices for both Zarbon and Freeza were pretty close to their Ocean counterparts (after all, all of the season 3 voices were meant to be imitations). The season 3 scripts might have exacerbated problems, but Linda Young was doing the same shtick people complained about Pauline Newstone doing two years earlier. And people were making jokes about whether or not Zarbon was gay long before Chris Sabat started voicing him.

I agree about Zarbon's voice. My friends used to laugh at every line King Cold said because they gave him a similar flamboyant voice.

No it wasn't. Zarbon in funimation sounded flamboyant. Zarbon in ocean dub sounded like an Aussie.Gaffer Tape wrote:FUNimation's voices for both Zarbon and Freeza were pretty close to their Ocean counterparts (after all, all of the season 3 voices were meant to be imitations). Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
There should never be any kind of "diversity" quota, especially for a series like Dragon Ball. Anybody clamoring for this is trying to fix a problem that simply does not exist.
I know I don't have to qualify my opinion in any way, but being bisexual myself, a sexuality which is often swept under the rug, I am happy watching or reading Dragon Ball and do not feel the need to ask Toriyama to add any characters that reflect my own sexuality or other identifying traits. It's a martial arts story, for pete's sake.

This doesn't mean the story should be devoid of love/romance which ties in with sexuality. Just as Vegeta going mad at Bulma getting slapped and screaming "MY BULMA!!!"....why can't this be applied to a gay character seeing his boyfriend getting hurt ? Why can't a character sexuality be mention in passing on the show rather than being a central theme of the character.clutchins wrote:There should never be any kind of "diversity" quota, especially for a series like Dragon Ball. Everyone here is talkin' about Blue and Zarbon(Who is in no way implied to be gay). You guys are forgetting about another gay character. Not only was he gay, but he was the best character in the series!
So we have 2 confirmed gay characters.
Also, Otokosuki's name in the German dub is "Homo".

Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
I just don't see any kind of romance that wouldn't feel shoehorned in for Dragon Ball. Vegeta's relationship with Bulma is strictly off-screen and it's not like he's ever affectionate to her when they do interact. What makes you think that they can create two completely new characters who are both gay and aren't completely shoehorned in? Even for the new series I don't see that happening. Toei is not exactly one to embrace this kind of thing anyway.shonenhikada wrote:This doesn't mean the story should be devoid of love/romance which ties in with sexuality. Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
Geez, I just can't win when it comes to Zarbon. The last time I got into a debate on the forums about Zarbon arguing against him being gay, I got pelted from all sides with comments that it was all about his appearance. I mention his appearance as a factor here, and I get pelted from all sides about it being his voice. Fine. I give up. Besides, it has nothing to do with this topic, especially given my main issue in my post was that you were seeming to imply that "badass" and "gay" were somehow mutually exclusive.shonenhikada wrote:No it wasn't. Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
I have no terribly strong feelings about this one way or the other. It'd be neat to see. I think I'd actually prefer it to be a hero over a villain though.
"Ototsuki returns with the shocking revelation that he's actually a Saiyan!"
It'd be about as good an idea as giving Vegeta a little brother.

Re: Trans/Gay/Bi-sexual villians
What are Japan's views on sexuality? I know the rise of asexuals is higher than ever, but what about others (trans/bi/gay)? I think that's an important question to ask when thinking about this.
